Throwing Things at Jesus

1 Peter 5:7 – “...casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

As Christians, we often can relate to the story of the footprints in the sand. Jesus carries us through the tough times. We know that. Yet, we have a tendency to hang on to worries, even while He’s trying to carry us. epirrhipto -- to cast upon

Luke 19:35 – “And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.”

1 Peter 5:6 – “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you...” How do we humble ourselves? By “...casting all your anxieties on him...”

R.H. Mounce said, “Worry is practical atheism and an affront to God.”

Charles Spurgeon: “Do not dishonor [the Lord] by always wearing a brow of care; come, cast your burden upon your Lord. You are staggering beneath a weight which your Father would not feel. What seems to you a crushing burden, would be to Him but as the small dust of the balance.”

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you...”

Oswald Chambers said, “Worry is an indication that we think God cannot look after us.”

“I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for

Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” (Philippians 1:12-14)

A.J. Cronin said, “Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its strength.”

So, how do we practically alleviate worry?

1. Get a proper perspective about life.

And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. (Luke

12:22-23)

"One root of anxiety is a misunderstood meaning of life." Steve Miller

2. Be thankful.

Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

"One thing that combats worry is thankfulness." Steve Miller

3. Remember the promises of God

2 Timothy 1:7 – “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Matthew 28:20 – “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Hebrews 13:5 – “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

4. Use a God-bag.

1 Peter 5:7 – “...casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

5. recall God’s faithfulness

When we remember what God has done in the past, it makes it easier for us to believe He will do it again in the future.

Daniel 6:10 – When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.

Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

What does it say just two verses earlier? vs. 6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Then it goes on to say, (vs. 7) “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Why do we cast our cares on Him?

1 Peter 5:7 – “...because he cares for you.”

Daniel 6:5 -- Then these men said, "We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God."

Daniel 9:3-11 – “...we have sinned...We have not listened... To us, O Lord, belongs open shame... we have

sinned against you... we have rebelled.”

1 John 3:1 – “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”

Romans 8:32 – “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
