AS A LENTEN PRACTICE, MARRIED COUPLES MAY WANT TO CONSIDER PRAYING THE FOLLOWING PRAYER TOGETHER: MARK 9:2-10 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant. THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED ! ♡ Prayer for the Bride and Groom O GOD, who hast ordained and sanctified the holy state of matrimony for replenishing the earth, for mutual consolation, and as a type of the union of Christ and His Church, give to us who have entered into this sacred relation, grace to both thankfully accept its blessings and faithfully to fulfill its duties. Accompany our union with Thy constant assistance, to enable us to live together in peace and love, in the careful discharge of all our duties to Thee and to each other. Deliver us from all evil temper, from every heedless action, which may in any way embitter or weaken the tie by which Thou hast bound us together. Make us true and affectionate, studious to please, and ready to deny our own will and inclination in all things. Let not the trials and crosses of this life induce us to murmur, nor let our earthly prosperity cause us to forget Thee, the Author and Giver of all blessings; but by patience and meekness, by prayer and thankfulness, may all blessings be sanctified unto us, and fit us for an eternal union with Thee. They have been given the gifts of freedom, comfort and privilege. Their parents love them and have been able to provide good schools, the money to wear brand-name clothes, and a big house to live in. Yet despite their economic advantages, the children of Rockdale County, Georgia, are living in a suburban community plagued by a teenage syphilis outbreak; where a shooting rampage in the high school made national news; and a local sixteenyear-old boy was killed in a fight at a popular strip-mall parking lot.” AN EXCERPT FROM A MARRIAGE AMENDMENT LETTER FROM BISHOP JUGIS TO THE DIOCESAN CHURCHES ...I write today regarding the referendum on the Marriage Amendment which will take place in North Carolina on May 8, 2012. Sincerely yours in Christ, NOTES FROM THE LOFT Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the penitential observance of Lent. The ashes are a stark reminder of our mortality. Simplicity is a keyword and throughout Lent... no extraneous decorations, no organ music (except to support singing), no flowers. THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED ! PAGE 6 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH! WWW.STJOHNTRYON.COM February 24, 2012 Dear Parishioners, I write following up on Bishop Jugis’ letter read at all the Masses last Sunday regarding the Obama Administration’s mandate that all insurance plans provide contraception, sterilization, and some abortifacient drugs (at everyone else’s expense, even if opposed to their religious faith). I ask that you heed the Bishop’s advice that we pray and fast. With the bishop, I encourage you to offer up some Lenten sacrifice, not simply for the repeal of the mandate, but also for our country to come to know the truth about these moral issues. To this end, each Sunday of Lent before Mass the parish will offer a rosary. Perhaps arriving early to participate could be just such a prayerful sacrifice for you and your family. While for the most part the bishops are framing arguments against the new HHS mandate as being a severe encroachment upon religious liberties (which it is) and a violation of our conscience rights (which it also is), there is another issue that we must not lose sight of in this debate: the Catholic Church teaches that contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs are intrinsically evil, and rightly so. These truths are not only accessible by reason, but also belong to the deposit of faith and morals as passed down by apostolic teaching and therefore are to be held with religious assent of intellect and will. Given the current national discussion, we should both seize the opportunity to examine how well our own consciences are formed and in turn preach the beautiful gospel truth regarding the theology of the body. While it is important to protect our consciences from violent coercion and to protect our rights to practice our faith, we must also remember that this is a moral teaching about the very nature of humanity and that we (the church) have a responsibility to give witness. We recall, “To whom much is given, of him will much be required.” Lk 12:48 In the past few weeks, it has become fairly clear that the media (and perhaps most of America) tends to write off the Catholic ban on contraception as old-fashioned nonsense. The polls of Catholics are equally disturbing. The truth is that up until 1930 all religions taught that contraception was morally wrong. Truth does not change because we find it inconvenient or impractical. The Catholic Church authoritatively maintains with the same moral clarity the truth about contraception. Although we do not advocate for the imposition of this teaching through legislation, we nonetheless have an obligation to speak to the inherent truth and beauty of the moral content of our faith. UT IN OMNIBUS GLORIFICETUR DEUS ! PAGE 7 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT! WWW.STJOHNTRYON.COM That you might better represent the moral content of our faith, I ask you to consider the following points. Contraception promises the pleasure of the conjugal act without consequence and without responsibility to one another or to a possible child. Contraception and sterilization change the very nature of the conjugal act by rendering void its life-giving purpose, while enabling the persons involved to be objectified. It should be noted that this does not apply to couples beyond the age of conceiving, women who have had hysterectomies for legitimate medical reasons, or couples seemingly unable to conceive. These conditions are not a choice. Their approach to nuptial love remains open to life even if physically impossible. Let us not forget, there were a few notable births that resulted from otherwise impossible circumstances, our patron St. John the Baptist and Isaac (the son of the Abraham and Sarah). Openness to life at any age or in any condition has been, and remains, a way in which men and women avail themselves to God’s providential plan. Globally, a contraceptive mentality has emerged leading to the widespread belief that the conjugal act is not primarily about procreation and nuptial love, but rather about recreation. What was designed by God to be an act of self-gift leading to new life and expressing nuptial love has now all too often become an act of selfishness that often leads to death for an unborn child (as the Pill frequently acts as an abortifacient). And while most of our society seems to believe that the world simply cannot function properly without the Pill, they seem to miss the connection between the widespread use of contraception and many societal problems. Pope Paul VI predicted in 1968 that, if contraception became widely accepted and used, there would be a general increase in promiscuity, adultery, births out of wedlock, and even governmental regulation of births (an every day reality in China). He also predicted an increased divorce rate and the eventual acceptance and proliferation of abortion. Many said this would never happen. Yet, in very short order all of this has come to pass. If we want these things to change, then we must be willing to speak clearly about the inherent harm of contraception and its corresponding mentality. By all means, let us contact our elected officials in defense of our religious liberty. But let us also be willing to speak the truth about the issue of contraception, as well as the under-reported issues of sterilization, and abortifacient drugs. And more importantly, let us practice what we preach by living our Catholic faith with integrity. Finally, I would like say a word about the so-called “controversial” or seemingly “sensitive” nature of the issue of contraception. No doubt the possibility of having a child is a great responsibility for which the nuptial love of husband and wife is uniquely and divinely designed. Rightly, married couples ought to consider these matters before God and with an informed conscience. This said, the rejection of contraceptives, as a means to a conscientious approach to planning a family is a far cry from going back to the days of the so-call rhythm method. With the many advancements of natural family planning, combined with the increased desire of people to employ natural rather than pharmaceutical methods, it is increasingly difficult to imagine that this sound moral doctrine can be regarded by anyone as controversial, primitive or outdated. The rejection of contraceptives is not only moral, but enlightened and forward thinking. Fr. Patrick Winslow THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED ! PAGE 8
