DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY PESHAWAR PAKISTAN PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY LAB ENGINEER: Engr Unsia Habib LAB TECHNOLOGIST: Mr Adnan LAB ASSISTANT: Mr Safeer Particle Technology Laboratory PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY (CHE 231L) The primary goal of the Particle technology Laboratory is to acquaint our students with some of the equipment used in chemical industries and to give them the opportunity to operate it safely. Laboratory covers hands-on-experiments demonstrating the application of chemical engineering particleTechnology units. The Particle Technology Laboratory is equipped for the study of the various mechanical operations associated with different solids. Experiments mainly deal with size reduction, size separation, clarification, kneading, solid separation etc. All basic experiments for solid particle mechanics like Jaw Crusher, Ball Mill, Hammer Mill, Plate and Frame Filter, Cyclone Separator, Sedimentation, Sieve Shaker are available in this laboratory. Analytical Sieve Shaker The analytical sieve shaker is used in research & development, quality control of raw materials, intermediate and end products as well as in production monitoring. The unit is also applicable for the separation, fractionation (wet and dry), and the grain size determination for various industrial and research applications. Measuring range of the unit is 20 um to 25 um with no of fractions of 9 to 17. Figure 1: Analytical sieve shaker 3 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 2. Hammer mill The unit is designedto generate a general laboratory grinding. The four armed cross revolves at a high speed in the unit, shattering or tearing anything fed in. The bench top unit is supplied with eight perforated plate screens. Figure 2: Hammer mill 4 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 3. Centrifugal Ball Mill The unit is suitable for ultra fine grinding ( wet and dry) of medium hard , fibrous materials hard and tough materials , using the unit we can calculate the constants for Bond’s law , Kick’s law and Rettinger’s law. An extremely high centrifugal force brought about by special design of the drive mechanism achieves a high degree of fineness and excellent mixing and homogenization of the specimen in an extremely short time. Figure 3: Centrifugal Ball Mill 5 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 4. Sedimentation Apparatus The unit is used to study the basic physical processes involved in sedimentation including zone formation and hindered settling. The unit consists of five equally sized glass cylinders mounted on a vertical back-panel with illumination from behind. Measuring scale is provided for each cylinder to measure the suspension height. Each cylinder may be removed from the board for filling and mixing of the solid particles as well as for cleaning.Using this unit student will be able to determine not only the effects of initial concentration and initial suspension height on sedimentation rates but also the effect of particle size distribution and the using of flocculating agents. Student shall also be able to construct the settling rates curves from a single batch experiment. Figure 4: Sedimentation Apparatus 6 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 5. Plate and Frame Filter press The laboratory size unit is robust and versatile and has been designed to allow clear demonstration of the mode of operation as well as a high degree of experimentation for scale-up to industrial processes the unit consists of filter and plate assembly to filter the feed by pressing and filtering phenomena. The unit can be used to perform experiments like determination of the surface cake resistance and filter medium. Figure 5: Plate and Frame Filter press 7 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 6. Mixer Mill The mixer mill is a compact versatile bench-top unit, which has been developed specially for dry, wetsoft, fibrous, hard and brittle and cryogenic grinding of small amounts of sample. It can mix and homogenize powders and suspensions in only a few seconds.Theunit is designed to process small samples and is used for fast ultra fine grinding of two samples simultaneously Figure 6: Mixer Mill 8 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 7. Jaw Crusher The unit is engineered for test but gentle preliminary size reduction of medium hard, hard, brittle and tough materials. The unit is particularly suitable for processing stone, minerals, ores, glass, ceramics, construction materials, brittle metal, alloys, slag synthetic resins etc .Feed size < 35 mm, Final Size <0.5 mm Figure 7 :Jaw Crusher 9 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory 8. Mortar Grinder It is suited for Ultra-fine grinding of inorganic and organic substances for analysis. The unit can grind, mix and triturate soft hard, brittle and pasty materials. The products of mortar mill can provide fast and safe handling of ash clays, chemicals, drugs, spices, food stuffs, pharmaceutical and homeopathic raw and finished materials, salts, oil seds, slags, soil silicates and cement clinker and many more substances. The unit grinds in the range in the range of Feed size <0.8 mm, Final size < 10 um Figure 8: Mortar Grinder 10 Department of Chemical Engineering U.E.T Peshawar Particle Technology Laboratory List of Experiments S.No Name of Experiment 1.
