Informative Speech This speech is designed for you to begin to do more professional-style public presentations. Your topic is on anything that you think you can educate your audience on that is also interesting to you. You should pick a topic that is more academic in nature than your demonstration speech. You will have between 5-7 minutes for your speech. You should include at least four academic sources in your speech. These should be cited according to MLA format on your outline and shared with us orally (source and date) during your presentation. Please use the Mt. SAC Library databases for research as explained in class. For your visual aid we will all be using a 3-5 slide PowerPoint presentation. You should include a title page with your PowerPoint to avoid showing your first slide as you start your speech. Each student will be assigned to give their speech on Tuesday 7/16 or Wednesday 7/17. You will know in class which group you are in. Since we have limited time to give speeches if you miss your day on your assigned week there will be no make-ups unless you are granted an exception per Communication Department Policy. If you have any questions about your assigned day please send me an email to dcantrell3@mtsac.edu asap. A draft outline is due in class on Monday 7/15 for use during our informative speech workshop. During the workshop we will work as a class to improve everyone’s speech using the informative speech checklist worksheet (p.51 ) from your textbook. You can use up to 3 3x5 note cards during your presentation – no outlines can be brought up to the front of the class. A full and complete outline will be due the day of your speech. This is the first major speech in our class and is worth 300 total points as explained on the rubric. This speech is roughly 1/3 of your grade in the class so please ensure you are prepared to excel. A critical factor in this speech is organization. The main points should be arranged in different ways such as topical, spatial etc. Demonstration speeches are not allowable for meeting this requirement. Be imaginative and creative in developing your speech. Remember to be objective rather than persuasive. As one of the two major speech assignments in the course, rigor and critical thinking are essential for this assignment. Research should primarily be drawn from credible and/or scholarly publications (Mt. SAC Library Databases). Name: Date: Informative Speech Rubric 1.
