and academic potential. At Stephen Lewis Secondary School, this is encouraged

As part of our objective to provide unique learning opportunities for students, we
have designed the Non-Profit SHSM program to build on the school wide focus of
social justice and equity through International Development. The program affords
students in all pathways, opportunities above and beyond their regular high school
experience. Students have the opportunity to be immersed in rich, life changing
experiences that build empathy and awareness, important attributes for 21st
Century global citizens. In addition, students will participate in experiential
learning with world class community partners such as: Daughters for Life,
Sleeping Children Around the World and Unity. Students will focus on developing
important values and life skills through exploration in the following areas:
Environment, Economic Realities, Globalization, Mental Health and Social
Justice.

Social Justice and Equity Through International Development
At SLSS, our SHSM program is rooted in Social Justice and Equity. The goal of our program is to provide students with
the opportunity to build the essential skills of critical thinking, empathy and teamwork that will be needed in the 21st Century
workplace. Through enriched experiences and certifications, our SHSM students will ready themselves for post-secondary
programs and the increasing employment demands facing their generation. Our community partners such as Right to Play,
Stephen Lewis Foundation, Studio89, Unity Charity and Sleeping Children Around the World acknowledge and support this
program through their commitment to experiential learning, certifications and exciting reach ahead opportunities.
In order to complete an SHSM in Non-Profit students are required to:
1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below);
2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs;
3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job
shadowing, job twinning);
4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport;
5. Gain “Reach Ahead” experience connected to the student’s post secondary plans.
