PATHWAY
TO A DEGREE 
The Faculty of Arts, Education and
Human Development values and recognises
learning you have previously undertaken.
This learning may have taken place at
Victoria University’s own TAFE or at one of
the local or international institutions with
which the Faculty has formal arrangements.

PATHWAYS
The Faculty of
Arts, Education
and Human
Development
What are Pathways?
Pathways are formal admission
agreements that recognise learning
already undertaken by students. Most of
the Faculty’s pathways are ‘crosssectoral’;
that is, they recognise learning
undertaken by students at TAFE level.
Students admitted via a pathway are
entitled to the credit outlined in the
Victoria University’s Pathways Database.
This can be accessed through our website
and typing in pathways in the search box.
What Pathways are offered by
the Faculty?
at a postsecondary level, students
are generally well equipped to fit into
university life. In addition, pathways have
been designed by academics, so students
will be able to build on learning already
undertaken.
Many of our pathways students have
gone on to undertake postgraduate study.
Some students are currently enrolled in,
or have completed Graduate Diplomas,
Masters, Doctorates and PhDs. Other
students are now working successfully in
their chosen fields.
Pathways are available for a range
of diploma and advanced diploma

“After completing the Diploma of Liberal
Arts in 2001, it seemed only natural to
pathway across to the Bachelor of Arts.
Ten years on and I’m still here, studying
my PhD and working full-time for the
Faculty.
The Diploma of Liberal Arts and the
Bachelor of Arts connect brilliantly. The
knowledge and skills I gained in the
Diploma were a great launching pad for
the learning I undertook in the BA.
I am now contributing to new knowledge
through my PhD, raising my kids to value
education and working in a great job
where people respect my opinions.”
This is an articulated course that provides students with an opportunity to study at TAFE
level for a Diploma qualification and provides the fundamental start into the educational
field.
An unusual but integral feature of the course structure includes 4 x 6 credit point units:
two in literacy and two in numeracy. These four units ensure sustained and extended
support for the development of literacy and numeracy capacity over the whole year.
Students who successfully complete all aspects of the Diploma of Education Studies
at the agreed achievement level have a guaranteed entry into the second year of the
Bachelor of Education (P–12) program at Victoria University. Alternatively, students may
articulate into a Victoria University Bachelor of Arts or pursue employment as a teachers’

INTERNATIONAL
STUDIES
Develop skills and attributes that today’s
employers need while engaging with
interesting and pressing challenges
faced by humanity. Our study abroad
programmes provide experience with
interaction of people and communities
across national and cultural boundaries,
and contribute to an understanding
of politics and international affairs.
Gain practical insight into operations
of organisations that engage in
international affairs, and identify careers
in government, corporate and not-forprofit sectors. Graduates leave our course
with knowledge and skills to succeed
in communities and workplaces both in
Australia and abroad.
Bachelor of International Studies
This course offers you the chance to
develop your knowledge of international
politics; how people and organisations
interact across political and cultural
borders. In a globalising world, the
frequency and intensity of this interaction

corporations all need to employ people
who understand international affairs.
As well as an academic understanding

also offers opportunities for practical
international experiences through study
abroad and learning in the workplace and
community initiatives.
