"Think Outside-the-Box"
2. Time to celebrate! ... It’s
"Think outside the box.” This familiar phrase reminds me of our Chapter’s
strategy and resonates with me as the key to all models for success. Over the
past year, our DC Chapter Board has conducted membership surveys,
developed strategic and tactical plans, recruited new members, secured new
partnerships and renewed previous partnerships, embarked on standardizing our
operations, derived a chapter mission statement, and designed an official
chapter slogan: DC NSHMBA: Connected to Powerful Resources. With each of
these elements, we have laid the foundation for a breakthrough year.

In 2013, I am committed to building on the new processes that our Chapter has created and delivering
the type of networking and professional development events that will inspire our members and partners to
‘think outside the box’ and become the go-to people in their respective organizations. Likewise, our
Chapter Board consists of some of the most talented, networked, and motivated professionals I have
ever worked with, and together, we will spend our energies on connecting our members to a powerful
network in one of the most dynamic cities of the world, Washington DC. This is a city hungry for business
professionals who can meet challenges head-on and hit the ball out of the park at each at-bat. Our goal is
to equip you with the resources and connections that will leave you hitting home runs on demand. And to
do so while creating productive and lifelong professional habits that will allow you to be a long-term
top-performer.
We are here to serve you and look forward to learning more about how to do so at our next event.
See you soon!
Sincerely,
Juan-Carlos (JC) Ramirez

years of commitment and dedication to advancing and promoting Hispanic leadership. Over all of these
years, NSHMBA has provided opportunities for educational and professional advancement through its
scholarship program, conferences, networking events, career fairs, panel discussions, and mentorship.
The DC Chapter has already started the celebration by hosting our 2013 Kickoff on February 7th with two

diversity and inclusion programs and Hispanic outreach, so they came to NSHMBA, one of the most
prestigious Hispanic business organizations in the U.S. to help them meet their needs in connecting with
our diverse talent pool of professional members!
More than 100 guests joined us at at SiriusXM’s headquarters to enjoy an evening of networking, studio
tours, raffle drawings, Latin beats, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Our guests included sponsors, partners,
members and friends of our Chapter, all of whom had the opportunity to star in the live taping of our 2013

The DC Chapter's University Partnership Program
The Washington DC Chapter proudly partners with several of the
universities in NSHMBA’s University Partnership Program, which
creates scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships for
NSHMBA members and offers university partners the
connections and support of a national professional organization.
We are proud of our "UPP’s,” as we fondly refer to our
partnering institutions, for the opportunities they provide our
members. DC NSHMBA currently hosts seven UPP’s:
American University
College of William and Mary
George Mason University
George Washington University
Georgetown University
University of Maryland
University of Virginia
Each of these partnerships creates greater networks, educational
programming, and increased support for our NSHMBA Scholars and
general members.
For example, this past December we organized a UPP MBA Fair,
hosted by Deloitte, a DC Chapter corporate partner. The event brought
together all of our university partners and created a welcoming forum for
NSHMBA members and guests to explore pursuing an MBA in 2013 or
beyond. Similarly at our January 2013 Kick-Off Celebration, Ana Castro,
a 2nd year MBA student at the University of Maryland, was awarded a
resume review session with a NSHMBA Board Member (valued at
$200). We will continue to share educational opportunities throughout the
year and encourage our members to succeed in their academic and
professional goals.
If you are a Scholar or MBA graduate student, and need academic, professional, cultural, or social
support, please email Nuria Rodriguez Padro, VP of Education and University Relations, at
universityrelations@washingtondc.nshmba.org so she can connect you to the right resources!
DC NSHMBA Goes to NSHMBA-U
This past January, members of the DC Chapter Board attended the NSHMBA-U Officer Leadership
Program in San Antonio, TX. NSHMBA-U is a program that was designed specifically for NSHMBA’s
leadership to address relevant issues impacting NSHMBA Chapters today. This year’s program provided
Chapter leaders with operational updates and professional and leadership skills for them to use to lead
their Board, membership and office teams. In addition, the program offered networking opportunities for
attendees. This year’s NSHMBA-U breakout sessions included:
1. Tools and Resources for Leadership Roles
2. NSHMBA Operations
3. Building on the Future: The Scorecard and Defining the Metrics
At this professional and leadership event, NSHMBA Chapter leaders also attended NSHMBA’s
Conference Kick-Off Event and then participated in the Multicultural and Multigenerational (MCMG)
Forum.
At the MCMG Forum, "When Multi-Cultures and Generations Collide: How to Bridge the
Gap,” Chapter officers learned strategies for getting four generations to work
effectively side-by-side, and heard about how cultural diversity is more present than
ever before in today’s organizations, which are often struggling to manage the
generational and cultural mix.
Cultivating Crucial Partnerships
2013 is going to be a meaningful year for our organization. We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary and
pursuing many new goals. At the local level, a major goal for our chapter is for our Corporate Relations
unit to implement strategies that will promote a major component of NSHMBA’s mission: to be the partner
of choice for organizations seeking to hire and develop Hispanic talent.
We are excited to share recent collaborations with Capital One, GE Capital, Latina Style Magazine, Latin
é, Sirius XM, and State Farm. Over the coming year, our Chapter will be working with these companies
to offer recruitment and professional development opportunities for our members. In fact, we’ll even be
able to refer our members by name after they submit job applications through our partners’ career sites.
We are also committed to creating new partnerships in 2013, and to doing so in industries that we haven’t
engaged before. We ask all members to consider if their company might benefit from a NSHMBA
partnership, and to contact Veronica Castro, our VP Corporate Relations to learn more about this
opportunity and about the job referral opportunity mentioned above. Email
corporaterelations@washingtondcnshmba.org, for more information.

Latin é (latin-e.com) is the newest entertainment source for the
American Latino. They are redefining entertainment for Latinos who
still watch traditional Latin Television and aren't having their cultural
needs met through mainstream, English-language television. With
their vision of having a nationally broadcasted cable channel, their mission is to entertain the American
Latino by providing media that is customized to meet their needs, educate and share our culture with
non-Latinos and uplift Latinos everywhere through quality entertainment. Founded in late 2012, Latin é
is capturing this emerging market with their customized media. With a growing social network
following on Twitter and Facebook, Latin é followers include celebrities such as rapper, songwriter,
actor and record producer, Pitbull, Latin recording artist Ricky C, Reggeaton Artist Fito Blanko and
Comedian Erik Rivera.
As they progress in their mission to uplift Latinos through quality entertainment, NSHMBA and Latin é
have created a strategic partnership. This partnership will highlight NSHMBAs 25th Anniversary
milestone as they continue building and advancing Hispanic leadership through graduate management
education and professional development. As part of that professional development, Latin é is
providing opportunities for those who are interested in supporting their mission of uplifting Latinos
through quality entertainment and further their careers in video production, entrepreneurship,
management, broadcasting, public relations, marketing, and social media. For more information
please contact Jason Torrico at dimelo@latin-e.com or visit www.latin-e.com.
Latin é is currently seeking candidates to fill the following positions:
1. TV Show Host and Hostess to star in a new talk show series to be broadcasted via the
Internet. This could also be an internship position.
2. Video Production candidates (internships also available) with a passion for the Latino
community.
3. Organized web development candidates with a passion for the Latino community (internships
available).
