Hort 275A Construction - Wood, 3.5 credits

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Introduces basic wood construction techniques and the use of basic hand and power
tools. Students will become familiar with choosing appropriate wood products and
fasteners as well as practice skills through the construction of some simple carpentry
projects.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
Introduces basic wood construction techniques and the use of basic hand and power
tools. Students will become familiar with choosing appropriate wood products and
fasteners as well as practice skills through the construction of some simple carpentry
projects.
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Horticulture 275, Wood Construction. This class is a combination of lecture and
hands-on application of construction techniques. Students will get practice with a variety of
construction techniques. There will be one off-campus field trip.
This class will introduce you to basic construction skills that will come in handy on the job
site, at home, or in design. You will be introduced to basic carpentry skills, materials, tools
and safety. You will also learn to choose the appropriate wood and fasteners to use in
landscape construction projects; a key objective is to learn to solve problems. We will tour
several retail building supply outlets to get a sense of how to select and price materials for
projects. During this quarter we may design and building a cloche and design and install
fencing. Dress for work. You will need clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, sturdy shoes
(pref. boots) and gloves. Safety equipment will be provided when using power tools.
REQUIREMENTS FOR HORT 275
Keep an accurate record of projects.
There will be quizzes on reading assignments, handouts and class discussions.
Many required readings are only available on the EDCC Blackboard.

Weekly homework will be assigned.
QUANTITATIVE SKILLS/COMPUTATION
Design and compute materials needed for construction projects.
Utilize tables for safe and efficient design of wood structures.
Read and interpret specifications for projects.
PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE
Attendance is required. Absence from class, LATE ARRIVAL or early departures will affect
your grade. You will be working in small groups, which can be an excellent way to learn
construction skills. Be prepared to share what you know as well as letting other group
members participate in the process.
PROJECTS
Participation in the class project is required for completion of this course. Students will
work in teams class project which when complete will become part of the campus
inventory. Each student will also be responsible for one independent/outside project to be
determined during the first 2 weeks of class. Records of materials and methods of
construction used will be part of logbook.
LOGBOOK
The logbook is recommended as valuable business tool for designing, tracking and
recording your class and projects.
