Dave Grohl; David Renzer, Chairman & CEO, UMPG
Welcome to the new UMPG! On behalf of the new global team in place at
UMPG, welcome to the first newsletter of the combined (UMPG/BMG/Zomba)
company. Our global integration is nearly complete, and this newsletter will
serve as an introduction to our leadership as well as give you a sense of the
breadth of our company. I’m very excited about the new team as I believe the
integration has resulted in the strongest executives helming our new combined
company.
Equally exciting as our management team, is the combined roster of our new
company which is world class and positions UMPG as a true powerhouse in
almost every musical genre around the globe. We are also excited about the
emergence of our production music division, Universal Publishing Production
Music, as the market leader; the strength of our Classical divisions (Casa
Ricordi, Editio Musica , Editions Durand, Eschig, Amphion, Editions Salabert,
etc); and our strong Christian/Gospel music publishing division, BrentwoodBenson.
More than ever, the goal of our company remains to provide our clients with
personal attention. This includes having a strong creatively driven staff, and
maximizing opportunities in the film/TV/synchronization areas. We also will
continue to provide our clients with the benefits of our leading global administration systems, and continue our proactive “marketing “approach to helping
our songwriters and catalogues maximize all opportunities.
As evidence of the close personal attention we emphasize at UMPG, we are
pleased to announce the re-signing of such important clients as; Paul Simon,
Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Ne-Yo, Rudy Perez, Dave Grohl, and many others.
We also continue to push the envelope with the various new media deals we
have been closing with such companies as SpiralFrog, QTrax, Slacker, and
YouTube as well as continuing to explore new revenue opportunities for our
clients through various merchandising deals.

The changing face of video game music
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
By Guest Columnist: Christian Wiseman, Senior Manager of Music for
Film & TV, Christian.Wiseman@umusic.com
Aside from the mind-melting visuals and sometimes baffling control schemes of today’s video games, what sets
the modern era of gaming apart from its predecessors is
its innovative and extensive use of music. Far from the
beeps and blips of video games past, modern video
games incorporate popular music as a core component
of their creative expression; so much so, in fact, that the
release of the latest soundtrack to Madden or Grand Theft
Auto is an event secondary only to the actual release of the game.
Increasingly, popular music is not only an added value to the background of the game, but is actually the featured star of the game.
Console games like Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, and Karaoke
Revolution put music front and center, allowing players to perform or
dance to their favorite songs. A new crop of online games like Nexon
Audition and a host of online karaoke games pit the player against
other competitors on a worldwide basis, letting them flex their musical
skills against a virtually unlimited array of players, while also creating
opportunities for both established and emerging musical artists alike.
Universal Music Publishing Group has been a huge beneficiary of this
trend towards using popular music in video games, scoring placements
in both music-based and non-music-based games across the spectrum
of gaming. Key 2007 placements for Coburn, Tom Vek, Whitey, Lupe
Fiasco, the Grand National, the Klaxons, and Jim Jones highlight the
promotional value of being involved in this emerging area of media.

UMPG HONORS MEL TILLIS
WITH ROOM DEDIC ATION
UMPG songwriter and artist, Mel Tillis was
inducted into the Country Music Songwriters
Hall of Fame. In celebration, UMPG dedicated
the “Mel Tillis” room at UMPG’s Nashville
offices.
Pat Higdon, EVP and General Manager, presented Tillis with an inscribed vase and gave
him a tour of the room which features Mel’s BMI awards, a vintage
guitar, Mel’s show posters, Mel’s handwritten lyrics, and a portrait of
Mel. The walls were covered in BMI awards for songs that Mel either
wrote, co-wrote or sang.
“Your first thought is your best,” reads Mel’s advice to writers who’ll
work in the room.
UMPG songwriters Rivers Rutherford, Matraca Berg and David Lee;
BMI’s Jodi Williams, Shelby Kennedy, Thomas Cain and Harry
Warner; and CMA’s Hank Adam Locklin basked in living-legend
glory. Mel kept the young Universal writers in stitches with his quips
and he seemed genuinely moved and delighted at the sight
of his room.
American country music singer-songwriter, Matraca Berg, has
renewed her long-term publishing deal with UMPG Nashville. In
addition to recording her own songs, Matraca has written for nearly
every major artist in the country music genre, including Dixie
Chicks, Faith Hill, Gretchen Wilson, Martina McBride, Patty
Loveless, Reba McEntire, Sara Evans, Keith Urban, Trisha

ANDREW JENKINS COMMENTS
ON THE POTENTIAL OF THE
By Guest Columnist:
Andrew Jenkins,
Executive Vice President of International,
INDIA/CHINA/SOUTHEAST ASIA MARKETS
With approximately half the world’s population,
the Indian sub–continent, China, and South East
Asia represent both a huge opportunity and a
huge challenge for our global music publishing
business. Traditionally these markets have suffered from high levels of piracy in the physical
world, but have
led the world in
the acceptance
of digital music
platforms with
mobile being
the preferred
option for markets like India
and China.
India and China
are two of the
fastest growing economies in the world as
reflected in the growth of their consumption of
music. The value of digital sales is expected to
exceed physical sales in China in 2008. The
challenge for all of us in the music business is
to make sure we are properly remunerated for
the use of our music.
“I believe the
prospects for
success are
better than they
have been at any
time in the last
ten years.”
Many of the countries in the region have vibrant
local music industries led in part by strong
independent companies. In countries like India
or China, International repertoire from the rest
Andrew.Jenkins@umusic.com
of the world may account for as little as 10% of
the total music consumed. It is important for
UMPG to find the right partners to invest in
local talent.
In India we have set up a joint venture company run by Achille Forler, a visionary music publisher in a country where it has been difficult in
the past to operate as a publisher in the traditional sense. We have signed one of the great
Indian artists Daler Mendhi, and his recent collaborations with The Wolfmen have already led
to two consecutive number one tracks on the
BBC Asia charts in the UK. We have also signed
an administration deal with T-Series to represent their catalogue of Bollywood soundtracks
in much of the world outside India. T-Series
usually represent 7 of the top 10 Bollywood
movies at any time and I look forward to
extending this relationship over time.
In China we have been slower to make
progress in local repertoire but with Ronald Siu
and Sharen Lee in Hong Kong, and Xu Heng in
Beijing, we will look to develop local relationships in this key market in 2008. China may
lead the world with new business models
because of the complexities involved in getting
music to customers, and we may see music
sold via utlity models….as much as you want
for a fixed monthly payment. Imagine that sort
of model applied to China Telecom’s 200 million
subscribers!
Our South East Asia offices continue to sign the
best local talent available in Taiwan, Korea,
Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and
The Philippines despite operating in difficult
markets showing huge declines in physical
product sales.
Digital is the future for the whole region and I
am delighted with the progress UMPG is making toward the signing of Digital MOUs for Asia
with both UMG and SonyBMG. I hope we are
soon able to announce details of these groundbreaking deals which should enable the legitimate digital business in the region to operate
with certainty and provide a model for the
whole industry to adopt. It is good to see the
record companies and music publishers, and
hopefully the collection societies too, working
together to support legitimate digital platforms
in a region where in the past the pirates have
been able to exploit the differences between us.
There is a lot more to do in Asia, but I believe
the prospects for success are better than they
have been at any time in the last ten years.

Universal Music Publishing Group has signed Brisbanebased rock band The Butterfly Effect to a long-term, exclusive, world-wide publishing agreement.
The Butterfly Effect are undoubtedly one of Australia’s leading rock groups, having released two Gold-certified albums,
with their latest Imago reaching number two on the ARIA
albums chart. The UMPG deal is effective immediately however it only covers new works by The Butterfly Effect.
UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP
SIGNS THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT
“A potent combination of killer songs and a tireless work
ethic has ensured The Butterfly Effect are not only one of
the best live draw-cards in the country but also one of the
few genuinely heavy Australian bands to make a serious
chart impact in recent years. We are enthusiastic and excited about joining forces with the band as they commence
writing what will be their career-defining third album” says
Heath Johns, Head of A&R/Creative, Universal Music
Publishing Group Australia.

DAMIEN

Universal Music Publishing Group
Australia has signed Damien Leith to
a long-term, exclusive, world-wide
publishing agreement.
"Damien is a genuine song-writing
talent, a true wordsmith with an
uncanny knack for creating timeless
melodies. We are thoroughly excited
that Damien has signed with
Universal Music Publishing Group and we look forward to working closely
with Damien and his songs now and into what promises to be a truly exciting
future" says Heath Johns, Head of A&R/Creative, Universal Music Publishing
Group, Australia.
Damien's recently released new album, Where We Land debuted at No. 1 and
has surpassed Platinum status in under a month. An achievement that is even
more satisfying given that it is Damien's first studio album proper and comprises songs almost entirely written or co-written by Damien.
After winning Australian Idol 2006, Damien's debut album The Winners
Journey, a collection of Damien's Idol performances (of both covers and original songs) debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA chart and subsequently reached
sales in excess of four times Platinum. This made The Winner's Journey one
of the highest (and fastest) selling Australian releases of the year.

acquired in 2007 and Universal Music Production Library, launched in 2006). The result is the undisputed leader in the industry with more than 5000 CD's, 200,000 tracks and 130 employees worldwide serving out of dedicated offices in 13 different
countries, with subpublishers in another 15 countries. UPPM serves the niche business that creates, produces and licenses
music for use primarily as "background" or "mood" music for use in film/tv, advertising, broadcast, and corporate clients.
Owning both the Master and Copyright for the composition, UPPM allows clients to license both in an easy one-stop shop.
PRODUCTION TRACK OUTPERFORMS
POPULAR MUSIC ON LOCAL CHARTS
UPPM Hong Kong first licensed the production track “My Love Will
Get You Home” for a TV Magic II compilation (the best-selling
English compilation that year). Recently, they placed the song in
the TV show “Heart of Greed” and have licensed the song for use
in a UMG compilation With Love. With all of the activity, the song
has become one of the most sought-after English songs in Hong
Kong, out-selling Ne-Yo, Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5, and Linkin Park
on the MOOV charts. This is a historic moment for UPPM and the
first time a production music track has topped the charts. Up next
for this track: Andy Hui, named Best Male Recording Artist has
performed the song and his label plans to release a Bonus
