RELIGION
When my days are not going as
planned, we make certain that this is
the one subject taking priority. Now it
may be occurring in our history lesson,
in that we are discussing the Catholic
perspective, say of the Reformation or
the Spanish Inquisition, or the heroic
deeds of our countries forefathers. But
most often it is in our daily Religion lessons, in our discussions on the
Lives of the Saints, on our Sacrament preparation, in our daily review and
discussions on catechism, or our Scripture study. We use Bible readings
often as a time to ask the children to read aloud, a skill worth developing.
For our little guys, the early Bibles are great first readers. For the middle
grade kids the language of the Bible can be challenging, so we can take
time to pause and define difficult words, reflect on a particularly beautiful
passage, or even a very familiar one but perhaps is seen in a new light
now that it is read in context to the entire chapter. The following items
are our recommendations for each grade for Religion. In addition we list
parent resources or our must-haves for the “Parent as Teacher”, in that as
questions arise in your Religion discussions or sacrament preparation you
have ready solid, reliable resources in which to seek out answers. By doing
so for yourself, you are modeling for your child a way to gather, and choose
appropriate “tools of learning.”

Didache High School Religion Series
The Didache Series takes its name from the first known Christian catechesis and the
earliest known Christian writing outside of Scripture, the Didache [DID-uh-kay] written
in the first century. The name of the work, Didache, is appropriate because it comes
from the Greek word for “teaching”. Today, the most comprehensive catechesis is the
Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Didache Series, which now offers both full year
courses (four subjects) and semester courses (8 subjects - 6 core, 2 elective) based on the
USCCB high school curricula guidelines, presents the life and doctrine of the Catholic
Church in the context of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the teachings
of Vatican II as witnessed by the pontificate of Pope John Paul II and the continuing
witness of Pope Benedict XVI. The Didache Series also draws from Sacred Scripture,
the lives of the Saints, and the Doctors and Fathers of the Church. The beauty and
quality of these colorful hardbound books qualify them as true art books too! The art
and knowledge of over 2,000 years has been compiled in The Didache Series. These
inspiring, sometimes breathtaking books will become treasured additions to family
libraries—to be passed along from generation to generation.
“It’s a textbook series like no other, because all four books are solidly orthodox...lavishly illustrated
with beautiful artwork and photography, maps, charts and diagrams...” [Comments on the initial
full year course curriculum]- Dr. Scott Hahn on EWTN’s Bookmark

Understanding the Scriptures
by Dr. Scott Hahn
We are extremely pleased with this text, ideally suited for
your 11th grade high school student, after using it with
our own children. This is a full year course with over 30
chapters that incorporates writings from the early Church
Fathers, Papal encyclicals, the Catechism of the Catholic
Church and of course plenty of Scripture. Each chapter
begins with the reading of appropriate chapters and verses
in Sacred Scripture prior to their reading of the chapter, so keep your Bible handy!
We strongly recommend using the accompanying workbook, as these questions
are well thought out and will provide a deeper understanding of the chapter
material, including thought provoking questions that ask the student how to
best relate the material studied to today and more importantly to their own lives.
Terrific! This book by Dr. Scott Hahn presents a Catholic approach to Scripture,
highlighting the theme of covenant. Tracing a path through salvation history, the
book explains the various books of the Bible and the importance of each event in
salvation history in a thoroughly interesting and very clear manner making it time
well spent (Complete Course, High School)

The Sacraments:
Source of Our Life in Christ
The Seven Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist,
Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony)
are the ordinary means by which God dispenses sanctifying
grace to his people. This book presents the theology of each
sacrament and its implications for living the Christian life.
The Didache Semester Series is a series of high school
textbooks, teacher’s manuals, and student workbooks published
by Midwest Theological Forum. Each title spans one academic
semester. These titles have been developed according to the 2007 curriculum
framework from the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catechism to assist in the
publication of religious education textbooks for Catholic high schools.
This book, The Sacraments: Source of Our Life in Christ, corresponds to Book V:
Sacraments as Privileged Encounters with Jesus Christ in the curriculum framework.
The Textbook is published with ecclesiastical approval from the Archdiocese of
Chicago, and it has been granted conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic
Church by the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catechism.
The Student Workbook is an accompaniment to The Sacraments: Source of Our Life
in Christ; it allows the student to engage the Seven Sacraments through compelling
and meaningful exercises. Using combinations of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and
short answer questions, the students recall and apply concepts from the textbook to
their own lives. (Student Workbook has perforated pages so students may turn in their
work. It also includes a collection of common Catholic prayers and devotions.)
The Teacher’s Manual is designed to help the instructor actively engage students
in discussions, activities, and reviews that investigate the origin, nature, and effects
of the efficacious signs of God’s grace that are the Church’s greatest treasures. It
is a companion to the textbook The Sacraments: Source of Our Life in Christ.
Resources in this manual include:
• The student textbook;
• Detailed lesson plans for each chapter, complete with Anticipatory Sets, Focus
Questions, Guided Exercises, Closure activities, and Alternative Assessments;
• End of Chapter Materials, including Long-Term Assignments, answers to the Study
Questions in the student textbook, responses to the Practical Exercises, and notes
for presenting additional information from the Catechism of the Catholic Church;
• Answers to the Student Workbook;
• Chapter Tests, Quizzes, and Vocabulary Reviews with answer keys;
• A CD containing printable Tests, Quizzes, and Vocabulary Reviews; and

Issues of Faith and Morals
By Cardinal George Pell, STD, The
Archbishop of Melbourne, Australia
EB
Pick
This book is written for Catholic youth of high school
and college age, addressing key issues and concerns that
are important to youth today about faith and life. With a
great pastoral love for young people growing up in a secular,
hedonistic society, Cardinal Pell seeks to strengthen the
hope of youth by explaining the depth of God’s goodness and love as revealed
in the Catholic tradition, ancient yet ever new. Using the Catechism of the
Catholic Church as his guide, he encourages youth to seek the truth as he
explains Christian alternatives to the false answers that assail us in the media
and advertising. He examines important contemporary issues from the Catholic
perspective, helping youth answer such questions as: Is there really a God? What
makes actions good or evil? What is the purpose of existence? Why go to Mass?
What’s sex got to do with love and marriage? Who is Jesus? Is there life after
death? What’s wrong with abortion and euthanasia? And many more.

(Grade 8, Faith & Life Series)
Each Faith and Life text is written by different authors and
we especially love this grade. We set aside one day a week
to discuss the chapter together after our child has read
the chapter themselves. We have used the text to make
mini-books or short essays on the main points of each
chapter. We then pick a chapter about once a month in
which we write a longer essay, often expanding on the little books we have already
made. Using it for our 8th grade religion curriculum, we have found it absolutely
the best preparation for our children’s Sacrament of Confirmation. During the
course of the school year your student will hear the call to holiness. There are
26 chapters that are rich in Catholic teachings, presented in four sections: The
Church, The Christian in the World, The Means to Fulfill Our Call to Holiness,
The End of Christian Life. The book begins with Christ’s abiding presence, the
Birth of the Church, Mary and the communion of Saints, then moves to our
life in virtue, works of mercy, vocations, law and conscience, and the Church’s
role in society. Then they study prayer and the sacramental life and finally our
death and judgment and the end of all time. Each chapter engages the reader and
provides questions and answers with references to the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. The activity book contains four different activities per lesson, some more
helpful than others, many with questions that could be used for your weekly
oral discussions. A great teaching tool would be to ask your child to prepare for
discussions by jotting down the pages and text references supporting their answers
to the questions on the activity books you want to cover.

The Beautiful Lady
By Pat Mora,
Illustrated by Steve Johnson & Lou Fancher
Every December, Grandma Lupita tells Rose the true
story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. As they make paper
flowers to put around her statue, Grandma begins: Long
ago, in the year 1531, on a cold December morning near
what is now Mexico City, a man named Juan Diego put
on his cloak and started down the road to church . . . On his way, Juan Diego sees a
beautiful Lady at the top of a hill. She tells Juan Diego to go to the Bishop and ask
him to build a special church for her. There she will hear all the prayers and needs
of her children. But the Bishop doesn’t believe that Juan Diego has seen the Lady;
he asks for a sign. Again the Lady sends Juan Diego, and again the Bishop asks for
a sign. Until finally, she provides an amazing, miraculous sign: her beautiful image
on Juan Diego’s cloak for everyone to see.
The Bishop realized Juan was telling the truth, and built a great Church in her
honor. Today in Mexico City the big Shrine still stands in honor of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, where millions of pilgrims visit every year to show their love for Our
Lady. And the same cloak that Juan Diego wore, on which the beautiful image of
Our Lady was printed, still hangs in the Shrine.

Once Upon a Time Saints
By Ethel Pochocki
“‘These stories,’ the author explains, ‘are meant to show
human and lovable people whose mysterious passion for
God led them into preposterous escapades.’ With an eye
on the taste of a child for concrete detail and no apologies
for ‘the embroidery of legend,’ each tale, in a style akin
to fairy-tale, sets forth the unique qualities of a Genevieve, a Felix, a Dorothy,
or Comgall—16 real saints brought unforgettably to our attention and fond
admiration.” --from the Publisher (Paperback, 96 pages, Ages 5+)

This book is a delight to all who read it—young and old.
Each story tells the life of a saint (many of whom are lesser
known) as though it were a fairytale. Do not be alarmed,
however, because the truth and beauty of these holy men
and women are not clouded in fantasy. In the author’s own
words, “fairytales clear the way for sanctity…and I have used the embroidery of
legend because I feel that under its eye-catching trivia, there is the good homespun
of fact.” The author lovingly weaves the tales of these amazing saints in such a
way that this book will quickly become a family favorite! The brief, yet fascinating
stories, make for the perfect bedtime tale! (Paperback, 90 pages, Ages 5+)

about real HEROES. Amy Welborn has an incredible gift
of relating deep truths to children in an easy manner. Her
description of “What a hero is” alone is worth getting this
treasure of a book. By using the spiritual and moral virtues
as a guide towards introducing REAL Heroes (Saints and
Blesseds) she incorporates opportunities for the child to really think about their
own relationship with God. Meet well known, lesser known, modern, and ancient
saints in stories that describe the saints lives and how they loved God above all,
how God was the center of their lives and in ways that our children can find true
heroes to imitate!!! This is a real find and one you will go to over and over again.
This book would also work well with the PACE program in bringing home virtue
to a child’s life. Great to read aloud. (HC, 7x10, 175 pages, ages 8+)

Miniature Stories of the Saints
This is our absolute favorite collection of saint stories for retelling at
the Kindergarten to second grade level. All seven of our children
have chosen most of the stories told in these sweet little books for
their own personal saint books. I read them the story aloud and
then they retell it to me as I copy down their retelling. Then I
make a copy of their retelling in a blank book and they draw their
own illustration of the saint as inspired by the lovely drawing
portrayed in these books. The lives of the Saints are written in
an easily understood and entertaining story form. Each story is
one page in length and includes a full color illustration on the facing page. The
stories are so simply written and colorfully illustrated that they are bound to make
a lasting impression upon a child as their introduction to the Saints of the Church.
All four volumes (96 illustrated stories) are also available in
one beautiful hardcover book. (Gr. 1+)

Margaret
Sister M. Juliana of MaryKnoll
Princess Margaret had blue eyes and long golden hair. She
had dresses of silk and velvet, and a little crown of gold and
jewels. She was not a fairy-tale princess but a real one and,
what is even better, she was a saint. Margaret married King
Malcolm and became Queen of Scotland. She had eight
children and she brought in priests for her people, had churches built, and started
schools and hospitals; she brought up nine orphans with her own children and
somehow she found time every morning to serve breakfast to twenty-four very
poor people! She is the special saint for all the Margarets and Peggys, Marguerites
and Marjories, and a very nice saint for anyone to know. (HC, 56 pp., Ages 6-10)

In The Footsteps of the Saints Series
We have been looking for a long time for suitable reading material
for children who are ready for their very first chapter book. Here
are the perfect books. These wonderful Catholic readers originally
published in the 1940’s through the 1960’s by Dujarie Press are now
thankfully being republished by a Catholic family business! They
are easy to read and are just the right size (6”x 8”) to hold and finish with a real
sense of accomplishment. Brother Ernest, who ran the press and wrote a majority
of the stories, is a natural story teller and each story is appropriately addressed for
these new readers to encourage and inspire them through these lives of “real”
heroes. Our “little guys” picked them up right away and read them with interest
(PB, 6” x 8”)
“The saints are the real heroes for today’s youth. Saints are just ordinary people with an
extraordinary love for God” Any one of us could be a saint. Let’s start our children on
the right path!!” Brother Roberto, CSC

Blessed John Paul II: Be Not Afraid
By Sr. Susan Helen Wallace, FSP
John Paul II, who served as Pope during the last 25 years of
the 20th century and who led the Church with hope into the
third Christian millennium, was beatified six short years after
his death on May 1, 2011. Born in 1920 to a devout Catholic
family, ordained a priest in 1946, ordained a bishop in 1958,
and elected Pope on October 16, 1978; the first non-Italian
Pope in 455 years. From that moment he took the Church and
the world by storm. He traveled the world to proclaim Jesus Christ to all people,
making a tremendous impact on hearts and minds and drawing large crowds
everywhere he went. John Paul II never let oppression and tyranny spoil his
dreams or dampen his faith. It is a message every child needs to hear as they try to
be a true follower of Jesus. (PB, 111 pages, Size 4 ½” x 7”, Grade 4+)

The newest release in this series for younger readers tells the
inspiring story of Saint Gianna from her awaited birth to her
touching death. This book reveals the friendly and loving
Gianna while we see her coping with the death of her siblings
and later her parents, moving to different places throughout her
childhood years, struggling with schoolwork, falling in love with
her future husband, fulfilling her duties as a doctor and raising
children. Gianna was impressed with the idea that we can prepare ourselves for
heaven by the way we live on earth. Gianna studied medicine and became a doctor
in 1949 specializing in pediatrics. Practicing medicine was not just her job, but the
way she obeyed Jesus’ command to love one another and nurture both body and
soul. It was not until she met Pietro, the brother of one of her dying patients, that
Gianna realized that God was calling her to marry and be a good Christian wife,
mother and doctor. (PB, 112 pages, Size 4 ½” x 7”, Grade 4+)

St. Louis and the Last Crusade
By Margaret Ann Hubbardl
Guided by the advice of his mother, Louis IX of France
ruled well and was beloved by his people. At twenty-eight
he took the cross of the crusade and set out with his army
for Egypt to take the Holy Land back from the Saracens,
Instead, the Saracens charged to victory and imprisoned
Louis, whose saintly conduct while in prison shamed his
captors. Released, and after another miserable failure in
Palestine, he returned to France broken in health but still
fired with the desire to liberate the Holy Land. And so
again, St. Louis led his men out from France, this time on the last crusade.

book will help you learn to abandon yourself to God, as these women did, and live
a rich, full life in return. Chapters are divided by each of the virtues, faith, hope,

of women saints who exemplify these virtues. Listed with each saint are their feast
day, patronage and time period in which they lived. (PB, 166 pages,. ages 14+)

The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe
By C. Lourdes Walsh
Glorious! This is a tender, beautiful story of the Blessed Mother’s
appearances to Juan Diego. The tale is set 10 years after the conquest
of Mexico, when a few Franciscan friars came with Spanish soldiers
hoping to convert the Aztecs to Christianity. However, “the cruelty
of the soldiers made it nearly impossible for the Aztecs to believe in
God’s love for them.” A few did convert, including Juan Diego and
his wife, Maria Lucia. Little did he know the powerful job God had
in store for him! This exquisite book and the amazing artwork of Jorge Sánchez-Hernández vividly
portray Mary’s love for us all. The Epilogue and the Afterword take great pains to really explain
and represent the Aztec culture at the time and the influence Mary’s apparitions had on the
people of the 16th century as well as the 21st century. There is also an actual image of Our Lady’s
imprint on Juan Diego’s tilma! Even if you think you already know this entire story, do not pass
this book over—it is a beautiful addition to every home library and will quickly become a family
keepsake! (PB, 52 pages, Beautiful Color Artwork from Jorge Sánchez-Hernández)

The End Times
What Catholics Believe about the Second Coming, the Rapture,
Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, and Indulgences. Section 282 of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church assures us that knowing what
happens at the end of human history is “decisive for the meaning
and orientation of our life and actions.” Knowing what happens
at the end of our lives and at the end of human history is of supreme importance
for understanding why God made us and what He has planned for us both in this
life and in the next.  Unfortunately, many non-Catholic groups today are promoting
serious errors about the last things. Sadly, many Catholics are vulnerable in this area
because they don’t know the Church’s teaching about the end times.  Unlike some
pagan religions that believe human history repeats itself endlessly with no ultimate
purpose, we Christians believe that human history in this world is moving toward a
climactic finale. (PB, 39 pages, high school through adult)

Finally! Finally! Finally! These books are
excellent, but also fun, funny, and simply
marvelous! So many apologetics books are
simply too dense for those of us who are not
experts. This series defends basic truths in a way
that everyone can understand. These books are
full of charming cartoons and quips such as “An atheist is a man who believes
himself an accident.” It also contains more serious arguments, such as Isaac
Newton’s statement that, “the existence of a Being endowed with intelligence
and wisdom is a necessary inference from a study of celestial mechanics.” Each
chapter dissects a separate argument against the Faith. Now teenagers and others
can defend themselves with confidence – and a little humor, too! (PB, approx.

A Philadelphia Catholic in King James’s Court
By Martin de Porres Kennedy
An extremely fun way to learn apologetics! We recommend
assigning this book before your high-school student begins
their Apologetics Religion course. This novel will engage you
as you learn to explain the Faith alongside our story’s hero.
Set on a horse-powered farm in Kentucky, 17 year-old Michael
visits evangelical relations. Over the summer, Michael joins
the Bible studies at his uncle’s non-denominational church
and is challenged by many, to defend his faith, using only the
Bible. This book covers commonly discussed doctrines such as the Papacy, Mary’s
role in salvation, and the Eucharist. The book is charitable, and entertains while
it informs. Perfect for teens and adults. Used by hundreds of parishes and groups
for RCIA, religious education, book discussion groups, and Bible studies. Don’t
miss the dramatic and unlooked-for conclusion. *Study guide is also available!!

Breathtaking. One cold winter’s night, a poor widow
wanders into the baker’s shop, and begs for a piece of stale
bread. In exchange, she offers to make her intention of
a Mass for the baker. The heartless baker mocks the old
woman; pulling out his scales, he writes “one Mass” on a
scrap of tissue paper to determine its weight in bread. The
ensuing miracle revives the lapsed faith of the entire town

tale is based on a true story, and there’s no better way to show your little ones the

Program for Achieving Character Education
By M. Monica Speach
The acronym PACE is used because the program is designed to
set the pace for children’s character development in the formal
learning environment as well as in the home. The exposure
to and study of morally sound concepts can go a long way
toward changing the attitudes and behavior of our children.
Multi-sensory exposures provided by listening, reading, writing, as well as discussing
these stories, help ensure that the moral content becomes part of the fabric of their
knowledge. Most programs offered lack one important component: faith. Without
faith, we can never hope to instill truly honorable conduct in our children. Character
Education based on the firm foundation of faith is the best - and only - way to teach
virtuous behavior. For this reason, Monica Speach has incorporated more faith-based
materials into the new manual. This edition of PACE is primarily geared toward the
Catholic home and school teaching environment. In addition to the materials covered
in the original PACE [quote memorization or copywork, virtue definition (including
synonyms and antonyms), Classic Stories, Bible stories, recommended booklists (listed
by grade level), discussion questions, writing ideas, and enrichment activities such
as music, art, nature and family projects], there are supplements to this restructured
curriculum. For example, a segment on how to practice the virtues in everyday life has
been included. There is now a section containing specific references to Catholic saints
(and lessons to be learned from studying them) as well as a Marian section aimed at
incorporating our Blessed Mother and her actions into our study of character concepts.
Who better than Our Lord, the saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary to demonstrate
fitting examples of moral conduct in our lives? PACE grows with your children and
can be used over a long period of time. The flexibility of PACE allows you to teach the
virtues in a number of ways. Some educators will choose to present one virtue each
month, whereas others might prefer to study a particular virtue for an extended period
of time. The virtues covered in PACE are: self-discipline, work, perseverance, faith/
trust, compassion, friendship, courage, loyalty, responsibility and honesty. * Highly
recommended by Laura Berquist!!!

Uses the following title The Book of Virtues and many titles easily found in your library.
The Book of Virtues: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories
By William Bennett
“The principled former secretary of education has culled
a selection of poems and stories to be read aloud in hopes
of passing on specific virtues to the younger generation.
The selected works appear under chapter titles such as
“Compassion”; “Responsibility”; “Friendship”; “Courage”;
“Perseverance”; and “Faith.” As artificial or perhaps selfrighteous as this project may seem, it is effective. The old
stories from the Bible, from great authors, and from folklore do exert a charm and
send a message that will stir families to discuss or contemplate the issues set forth.
It truly is a treasury, with some tales so brief they can be read at the dinner table.
Perfect bedtime, anytime family reading.” - Booklist *LB Syllabus K-2 and PACE

The Little Women Hospitality Program
By Anne Milligan Callaghan
What a delight to be able to offer this book to you! On
the title page of this book is the following verse, “I was a
stranger and you welcomed me.” -Matthew 25:35. How
uplifting to find a mom who has seen the need to teach
the virtue and skills of true hospitality and put together
a program that is well thought out and easy to use. But
what is especially delightful to me is how she has also tied
in stories from literature, the Bible, or a saint’s life that
are tied to the particular skill. This program teaches 10
different aspects of hospitality which can be used during
the school year from September to June, or as a follow-up
to your Little Flowers group or just about anytime and
in any order. Your girls will learn the proper way to
clean a room, how to Bring Hospitality to Others, Table
Manners and Conversation, Correspondence, Sewing
and dressing Modestly, Cooking, How to set and clear
a table, Preparing a room for a guest, how to plan a
Mother and daughter tea and even a book club idea!
The teacher’s manual lays out all the organizational ideas
and prep needed for each hospitality taught, including
Demonstration of the skill, practice of the skill, fun games, Take Home ideas and
even field trip ideas. You will most likely want a student Companion book for
each girl in the program. In it she will find all the take home ideas, recipes and
field trip ideas too!

Celebrating the Faith in the Home Series
By Teresa Zepeda and Laurie Navar Gill
We just love these books! They’re back in print! They
are the product of two homeschooling moms, who
have scoured through time-tested Catholic family
traditions (including the now out-of-print, Maria von
Trapp’s Around the Year with the Trapp Family), collected
their favorites and included them in their own family
traditions. Each season, as we pull out the appropriate
book, the family gets really excited about preparing for the upcoming events of the
Church year. We often pick out a new idea and find that once we try it, the kids ask
for it the following year. This past Lent we did “The Tree of Life” poster where we
began with a bare tree trunk and as each day of Lent passed, we added leaves to
represent our good works for others. On Sundays, we added roots to show how the
Blessed Sacrament is the food that feeds our souls and readies our hearts to do good!
These books may not be glitzy, but the ideas have developed fruits for our families’
spiritual growth. (PB) Gr. KG+.

I Have, Who Has? Faith Cards eBook Download
by Lindy Meyer
I Have, Who Has? is a popular comprehension tool used among
educators for a variety of subjects. We have adapted this concept
to the Catholic Faith in helping students learn more about the various facets of
their faith.
I Have, Who Has? is a card game that can be played with an individual student,
small group or large group of students with each student having one or more cards.
The student with the first card reads the card by saying “I have the first card.
Who has…” Each student then looks through their cards to find the answer to
the question asked by the first student. The student with the correct answer reads
the card by saying, “I have…Who has…” The game then continues until all the
cards have been gone through. The student with the answer to the last question
will finish by saying, “Who has the first card?”
The I Have, Who Has? Faith Cards are available in a digital, pdf format that you
will be able to download shortly after checkout. You may print the file and cut out

Yours is my favorite homeschooling catalog. It's the only one I keep,
