EXISTING PROGRAM UPDATES
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA): Major Expansion
This year the School of Business has added four new majors
to its BBA degree. In addition to the existing Accounting
major, students can now choose between: Financial Services,
Human Resource Management, Marketing, or Supply Chain
Management. First year intake has expanded to 240 seats,
offering excellent new options to students seeking a business
degree.
SCHOOL OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC
SAFETY
Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles
Program length has changed from 10 to 8 months.
Pharmacy Assistant
Increased the number of seats to 32 in both Winter and Fall
intakes.
The BBA will offer a common first year, with students entering
their chosen major in year two. SAIT’s business degree stands
out because it offers a higher number of business- and majorrelated courses than comparable programs. It also offers
practical and immersive courses that give students valuable
experience solving business problems under the guidance of
highly qualified faculty with industry experience. In their final
semester, students have an Integrative Experience Elective,
giving them the choice of a work placement or capstone
consulting course, to integrate and apply all their knowledge in a
real business setting.
The BBA has moved to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) structure,
meaning that students will now bring their own laptop to class.
The laptop must meet the minimum device requirements listed
on the Laptops and Technology page at sait.ca/business.
Business Administration Diploma: New Majors
The two-year Business Administration diploma has added two
new majors, in addition to the four existing majors (Accounting,
Financial Services, Management, and Marketing). Now, fulltime students also have the option of taking Human Resource
Management or Supply Chain Management. Graduates of the
diploma will have the option to apply for advanced standing in
SAIT’s BBA, subject to a competitive admission process.
New Academic Advising Structure
This year the School of Business introduced an integrated
team of academic advisors to guide students throughout their
business degree or diploma program. There are now seven fulltime advisors who can provide support on a range of topics. To
book an appointment, contact business.advising@sait.ca or call
403.284.8485.

LEARNING SKILLS SERVICES
MC221
403.284.8082
learning.skills@sait.ca
Learning Skills Services encompasses several supports designed
to increase students’ academic success.
Study skills workshops. Throughout the semester, academic
coaches offer workshops on a number of topics related to active
learning. At the request of an instructor or Academic Chair, the
workshops can be customized for the specific course or program
and offered in class. Workshops include the following topics:
•Managing time and being organized
•Reading academic text
•Taking effective notes in class
•Remembering important information
•Preparing for and taking exams
Appointments with students. Academic coaches also work
individually with students to develop students’ active learning
skills noted above.
PREP 100 THE SAIT EXPERIENCE
PREP 100 was developed with 14 modules on topics such
as managing time, managing stress, budgeting, learning
strategically, improving memory, and taking tests. PREP 100
is offered to SAIT students prior to the start of their first
semester. Students have the option to take the course entirely
on-line at their own pace or attend classes. The purpose of
PREP 100 is to help make students’ transition go more smoothly.
Students learn about themselves through self-reflection and
self-assessment, as well as learn skills and effective learning
strategies which will maximize their post-secondary experience.
These skills are transferable life skills that apply in their careers
as well. They gain confidence as a learner and will be able to
identify and use SAIT resources to assist them in reaching their
academic and personal goals.
PREP 145 ORIENTATION FOR
APPRENTICES
PREP 145 is a free study skills course specifically for apprentices
held during the evening of the first week of training. Apprentices
find out about SAIT learning resources, discover their learning
style and how to use it, develop memory techniques, learn
effective ways to conquer modules, learn how to prepare for
apprenticeship provincial exams, and develop strategies for
writing multiple choice tests.
MATH 123 MATHEMATICS REFRESHER
COURSE
This free refresher tutorial based course prepares students for
SAIT’s calculus courses (MATH 238 and MATH 288). This course is
strongly recommended for students who had achieved less than
70% in Alberta Pure Math 30 or Math 30-1 and for those students
who had taken math courses more than two years ago. Topics
include a review of algebraic operations, geometry, functions
and graphs, trigonometric functions, factoring and fractions,
quadratic equations, exponents and radicals, exponential
and logarithmic functions, additional types of equations and
systems of equations, equations of a higher degree, variation,
additional topics of trigonometry, plane analytic geometry and
transcendental functions.
APPRENTICE ONLINE ASSESSMENT
TOOL
Research has noted that having strong essential skills such as
mathematics and reading are related to apprentices’ success
in completing training. Apprentices can take a free online
assessment tool to check their current mathematics and
academic reading skills. Based on the results of the assessment,
they are given suggestions for what to do to prepare for training.
For more information go to sait.ca/assessment.
PEER ASSISTANT AND LEADER (PAL)
PROGRAM
A Peer Assistant and Leader (PAL) is a student who provides
academic and support services to other students who require
additional assistance outside of the classroom. A PAL may be
involved as either a peer tutor or peer mentor. Peer tutors are
available for many SAIT first year courses. Check the peer tutor
board in MC221 for the schedule for tutoring by program. Peer
mentors are available in select programs.
LEARNING LABS
Learning labs are intended to complement course instruction,
not replace it. The lab tutor assists students understand course
concepts but does not correct mistakes or fix assignments. The
tutors are aware of, and avoid academic misconduct, as noted in
policy AC 3.4.1 Student Code of Conduct. Students are expected
to come prepared to the labs with their course material,
assignment and specific questions that they want addressed.
Students are encouraged to work on their assignments in the
lab while waiting for the instructor to provide assistance. The
learning labs are offered on a drop-in basis.
BACK ON TRACK
Back on Track is a program designed specifically for students
on academic probation. Students identify their own reasons for
being on academic probation, learn about all the SAIT resources
available to them as well as key tips and strategies for being
successful at SAIT. Students follow up several times in the
semester with an academic coach.
CHINOOK LODGE
N108
403.210.4028
chinook.lodge@sait.ca
With the support of generous corporate partners, SAIT
Polytechnic opened Chinook Lodge Aboriginal Resource Centre
in 2001 to provide a dedicated space to serve the learning,
training and personal needs of Aboriginal students.
Students make use of the Lodge’s resources and study areas,
participate in cultural and social activities and socialize with
other students. Chinook Lodge helps SAIT Aboriginal students
achieve their career goals through the arrangement of industry
and business networking initiatives. Student Advisors are
available in the Lodge to assist with program application,
locate housing, provide information on funding procedures and
guidelines, and act as liaison with First Nations and Aboriginal
community resources as needed.
