STUDY GUIDE FOR PHASES OF MATTER QUIZ
For this quiz you need to be able to understand the three main states of matter and how their molecules are arranged, the movement of their molecules, and the shape and volume of each phase. You will also need to know what happens when temperature or energy is added or subtracted to/from each state and what the term for each phase change is.
SOLID MOLECULES
● Close together
● Vibrate
● Cold low energy
LIQUID MOLECULES
● Spread out a little
● Flow freely
● Warm higher energy
GAS MOLECULES
Draw what the molecules in each phase look like
● Far apart
● Fast bump off each other
● Hot high energy
PLASMA
● 4th state of matter
● Hotter than a Gas
● Moves faster than a Gas
● Very high energy
MELTING POINT/FREEZING POINT The point at which a liquid decides to either melt or freeze (Water is
0 0 C)
BOILING POINT The point at which a liquid decides to vaporize (Water is 100 0 C)
CONDENSATION Gas to a Liquid (take away heat) morning dew
VAPORIZATION Liquid to a Gas (add heat) puddle evaporating
SUBLIMATION Solid to a Gas (add heat) Dry ice
DEPOSITION Gas to a Solid (take away heat) fog to a snowy mountain top
FREEZING Liquid to a Solid (take away heat) Water to Ice
MELTING Solid to a Liquid (add heat) Ice to Water
You need to be able to explain what happens to the molecules as they move from one phase to another.
When heat is added they speed up and become farther apart (they gain energy). When heat is subtracted they move slower and get closer together (they lose energy).
