jurying for the 42nd annual Hungry Mother
Festival, sponsored by The Art League of

• CLOSING FEB. 2: “Saved: Jody
Servon and Lorene Delany-Ullman” is
on exhibit at William King Museum of Art,
Abingdon, Va. “Saved” is a photographic
and poetic exploration of the human
experience of life, death and memory. The
project considers how memories of the dead
become rooted in everyday objects, and how
objects convey those memories to the living.
Servon’s art projects include installations,
drawings, photographs, sculptures, video and
social experiences. Her work has appeared
in exhibitions in the U.S., Canada and China.
Delany-Ullman is a poet who teaches at the

• OPENING FEB. 2: The artwork of
Ed Midgett, Boone, N.C., is on display
in the Panoramic Gallery at William King
Museum of Art, Abingdon, Va. Midgett is
an award-winning filmmaker, visual artist
and professor in the department of art at
Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
His work has been shown on public television
and in the Berlin Film Festival as well as in
many other festival, museum and gallery
venues. An opening reception is held

• FEB. 5: First Thursday in Abingdon,
Va., brings gallery-goers together one night
a month. Catch the trolley for free as it loops
around town between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

• OPENING FEB. 5: “Mapping the
Cosmos: Jan Hurt and a Constellation
of Artists” is at William King Museum of
Art, Abingdon, Va. “Mapping the Cosmos”
began with 13 hand-selected artists from
the region who then asked one other artist
to participate. The 26 artists randomly
selected part of the cosmos from a hat
and were allowed to interpret their topic
in any media they choose. The artists then
sought out, in light of current knowledge
or totally disregarding current knowledge,
to re-imagine, explore and reinterpret the
cosmos. An opening reception is held

• FEB. 5-28: The February featured
artist work at Mallory Fine Art, Abingdon,
Va., is “Me and Mrs. Jones” by Leila
Cartier and Shawn Crookshank, and other
works by Cartier. The featured piece is a
collaboration that blends Crookshank’s
“Jones” series and Cartier’s abstractions of

Saga of Sycamore Shoals” are held at 2
p.m., at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area,
Elizabethton, Tenn. If you are interested in
performing in Tennessee’s official outdoor
drama, audition for this interpretation of

Art Guild seeks entries for its juried 50th
annual Appalachian Art Show. Cash

• FEB. 8 & 9: Auditions for
Jonesborough Repertory Theatre’s
performance of “The 39 Steps” are held at
7 p.m., at the theatre, Jonesborough, Tenn.
Broadway’s longest running comedy, written
by Samuel French based on the Alfred
Hitchcock movie and directed by Melanie
Yodkins, runs April 9-19. For audition

Turning Point: The Civil War in Virginia”
is on exhibit at William King Museum of Art,
Abingdon, Va. The exhibit is on loan from
the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond,
Va. From 1861 through 1865, Virginia
