As a membership organization, AmCham Macedonia is always looking to strategically
grow membership to encompass more of the high caliber organizations working in

an application (available on our Web site), Board review and recommendation and,
finally, confirmation of new members by general membership at our Annual General
Assembly meeting held each September.
AmCham received a total of 11 applications for membership in 2008. The Board of
Directors approved 9, rejected 1 and 1 application is still in process. The members

2008 Highlights
In a busy year of events and activities, there are always a few that stand out as
particularly memorable; this year, they were:
Bilateral IPR Conference with AmCham Serbia
AmCham Macedonia hosted a Bilateral Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) conference
with AmCham Serbia on October 15-16th in the Metropol Lake Resort in Ohrid.
This conference focused on IPR enforcement in the region and included over 100
key government, NGO and private sector stakeholders from a variety of industries

in both countries. On the Macedonian side, these included
representatives from the Ministries of Culture, Economy,
Interior and Justice, the Macedonian Customs Administration,
the Coordinative Body on IPR Issues and the Council on Radio
Broadcasting, in addition to representatives of various courts
and other legal bodies. The conference provided a cooperative
venue for exchange of regional experiences, to raise related
concerns and build awareness among these key officials with an
emphasis on enforcement of IP laws and regional cooperation.
The conference attracted over 120 guests from throughout the region, including:
Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia.
Giving Back to the Community – Poraka-Negotino
AmCham’s members play a positive role in their communities in various ways:
monetary donations, donations in kind, volunteerism and public-private partnerships
are just a few. As an association of progressive companies, AmCham itself also strives
to make an impact in an underserved community each year. Two AmCham events
this year resulted in donations totaling €1,500 to Poraka-Negotino, a day center for
people with mental disabilities. These were the AmCham-Grant Thornton Tennis
Open, a casual, friends-only tennis tournament at the Aleksandar Palace courts in

Skopje, and a Welcome Cocktail in honor of H.E. Phillip Reeker, U.S. Ambassador to
Macedonia.
Poraka (or “Message”) provides a safe and engaging environment for special needs
children (>5 years old) and adults, Monday – Friday, 8 hours per day. The center meets
several very important needs in the community, including:
„ Raising local awareness of the challenges people with mental disabilities
face;
„ Providing relief for families struggling economically or emotionally; and
„ Encouraging the independence and social integration of people with special
needs.
AmCham’s donations went to purchase heating equipment and to recognize Poraka’s
volunteers for the important work they do every day out of love and dedication. For
more information on Poraka-Negotino, please call Gordana Trajkovska at 043 370 720

8th Annual General Assembly
AmCham Macedonia held its seventh annual General Assembly on September 18th,
at the Stonebridge Hotel in Skopje. More than 50 member representatives were in
attendance to review the chamber’s operations and activities and elect 4 members
to the AmCham Board of Directors.
AmCham’s 7-member Board of Directors shapes the organization’s mission and
strategic plan. The Board also serves as a steward of the organization, actively working
with staff to design and monitor the effectiveness of programs and services to ensure
they are consistent with its mission. Board members volunteer for 2 year periods to:
„ represent the organization to others,
„ assist in recruiting new members and
„ ensure the sustainability of the
organization.

Advocacy
AmCham Macedonia is dedicated to issue-based advocacy via its committees focused
on intellectual property rights protection, workforce development and corporate
governance. These committees gather subject matter experts from a variety of
backgrounds and experiences to:
Contribute to the “marketplace of ideas” in Macedonia and do more than
complain about the status quo;
„ An impressive group of human resources industry peers, our Workforce
Development committee held candid and informal knowledge exchange
sessions this year on a variety of practical subjects.
 Represent business interests to help shape policies;
„ Our Workforce Development committee provided feedback on the
implementation of the new Labor Law. AmCham, in turn, expressed
concern that the implementing regulations of the Law had not been
released in time to allow companies to comply and called for a grace
period.
Offer authoritative viewpoints to build understanding among relevant
authorities;
Encourage dialogue between the business community and all groups and
institutions involved in or impacted by a given issue;
„ Our Intellectual Property Rights committee helped design and realize
this year’s Bilateral IPR Conference with AmCham Serbia. The group has
also a matrix detailing the various bodies competent for IPR issues in the
country. The matrix will help clarify “who does what” across the various
aspects of IPR enforcement in the country.
 Provide alerts and proactive advice to the wider community;
„ Our Corporate Governance committee has volunteered to provide
guest speakers to Macedonia’s various public and private universities. As
practitioners, their expertise will enrich business programs that currently
have no Corporate Governance element, as well as supplement existing
CG courses with real-life insight.
Encourage feedback from inside and outside AmCham and act upon it (nonAmCham member organizations are encouraged to participate as committee
members).

Communications
AmCham communicates with its members and the world via 3 primary channels:
the AmCham Macedonia website, Emerging Macedonia magazine and our monthly
e-newsletter. During 2008, all of these communications were consistently and
professionally delivered on time,
maintaining a key membership value.
This spring, the AmCham team spent
significant effort and funds to completely
revamp its website, www.amcham.com.
mk. Since these improvements, the site
has averaged over 1,600 unique visitors
per month! That means, since the site
launched in April of this year, over 15,000
people have sought information on
our organization and its members. We
believe this shows a strong demand for
well-written, English language information on doing business in Macedonia and our
unique ability to supply it.

The member-as-author model ensures that the publication is not just another source
of the same, quickly outdated news readers can find elsewhere. Instead it is a forum
for thought leadership and an opportunity to reach interested peers around the
world. The magazine’s reach is also expanded via our website, where hundreds of
additional people download and read the magazine each month.
Finally, the e-newsletter keeps AmCham members and friends abreast of internal and
external events, initiatives and activities. It is also a place for members to share their
success stories with others. A total of 30 member success stories were published and
distributed via our newsletter in 2008.
Administration and Financial Statements
In terms of finances, 2008 appears to have been the most successful year in
AmCham’s 8-year history. This is largely due to the initiation of our Patron program.
AmCham Patrons ensure that AmCham has sufficient funds to cover a set repertoire
of activities over the course of the year. This means the Executive Office spends more
time planning and executing events, rather than fundraising for them.
AmCham Macedonia’s year-end financial statements are shown on the following
pages. Any questions or requests for clarification should be directed to the AmCham
Macedonia Executive Office.
