AmCham’s 7-member Board of Directors shapes the organization’s mission and strategic plan. The Board also serves as a steward of the organization, actively working with staff to design and monitor the effectiveness of programs and services to ensure they are consistent with its mission. Board members volunteer for 2 year periods to: represent the organization to others, assist in recruiting new members and ensure the sustainability of the organization. 68 Yearbook 2008-2009 American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia The Board members elected to serve until September 2010 were: Ilijanco Gagovski, Country Manager Microsoft Macedonia Jovan Madjovski, Country Manager of the CEED Program SEAF Macedonia Bozidar Jankovski, Executive Director Diners Club Macedonia Klaus Mueller, Chief Director of Key Issues Makedonski Telekom AD The assembly was followed by a cocktail reception featuring brief remarks by Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy - Skopje, Thomas Navratil, and Darren Hultman. Yearbook 2008-2009 69 American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia Advocacy AmCham Macedonia is dedicated to issue-based advocacy via its committees focused on intellectual property rights protection, workforce development and corporate governance. These committees gather subject matter experts from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to: Contribute to the “marketplace of ideas” in Macedonia and do more than complain about the status quo; An impressive group of human resources industry peers, our Workforce Development committee held candid and informal knowledge exchange sessions this year on a variety of practical subjects. Represent business interests to help shape policies; Our Workforce Development committee provided feedback on the implementation of the new Labor Law. AmCham, in turn, expressed concern that the implementing regulations of the Law had not been released in time to allow companies to comply and called for a grace period. Offer authoritative viewpoints to build understanding among relevant authorities; Encourage dialogue between the business community and all groups and institutions involved in or impacted by a given issue; Our Intellectual Property Rights committee helped design and realize this year’s Bilateral IPR Conference with AmCham Serbia. The group has also a matrix detailing the various bodies competent for IPR issues in the country. The matrix will help clarify “who does what” across the various aspects of IPR enforcement in the country. Provide alerts and proactive advice to the wider community; Our Corporate Governance committee has volunteered to provide guest speakers to Macedonia’s various public and private universities. As practitioners, their expertise will enrich business programs that currently have no Corporate Governance element, as well as supplement existing CG courses with real-life insight. Encourage feedback from inside and outside AmCham and act upon it (nonAmCham member organizations are encouraged to participate as committee members). 70 Yearbook 2008-2009 American Chamber of Commerce in Macedonia Communications AmCham communicates with its members and the world via 3 primary channels: the AmCham Macedonia website, Emerging Macedonia magazine and our monthly e-newsletter. During 2008, all of these communications were consistently and professionally delivered on time, maintaining a key membership value. This spring, the AmCham team spent significant effort and funds to completely revamp its website, www.amcham.com. mk. Since these improvements, the site has averaged over 1,600 unique visitors per month! That means, since the site launched in April of this year, over 15,000 people have sought information on our organization and its members. We believe this shows a strong demand for well-written, English language information on doing business in Macedonia and our unique ability to supply it. Instead it is a forum for thought leadership and an opportunity to reach interested peers around the world. The magazine’s reach is also expanded via our website, where hundreds of additional people download and read the magazine each month. Finally, the e-newsletter keeps AmCham members and friends abreast of internal and external events, initiatives and activities. It is also a place for members to share their success stories with others. A total of 30 member success stories were published and distributed via our newsletter in 2008. Administration and Financial Statements In terms of finances, 2008 appears to have been the most successful year in AmCham’s 8-year history. This is largely due to the initiation of our Patron program. AmCham Patrons ensure that AmCham has sufficient funds to cover a set repertoire of activities over the course of the year. This means the Executive Office spends more time planning and executing events, rather than fundraising for them. AmCham Macedonia’s year-end financial statements are shown on the following pages. Any questions or requests for clarification should be directed to the AmCham Macedonia Executive Office. AmCham Macedonia’s year-end financial statements are shown on the following pages.
