EXAMS
There will be two exams during the semester. The second exam is not cumulative, that is, it
relates to the topics covered after the first exam. The second portion of the course involves
several formulas. A formula sheet containing any important formulas we have covered will be
included with the second exam. The formula sheet and a calculator are the only materials
allowed for use during exams. All other materials must be left at the front of the room or in a
closed book bag under your desk. During an exam, the use of books or notes (in any form) is
prohibited. Sharing a calculator is expressly prohibited. The use of a cell phone, even as a
calculator, is prohibited. Cell phones are to be turned off during the exam. It is your
responsibility to bring your own calculator and pens or pencils. Exams will include both
conceptual and quantitative questions and will be a mixture of short essay, show your work,
and multiple choice questions. To be prepared for the exams, you are encouraged to keep up
with the reading material, review and practice problems worked in class, and practice working
some of the problems in the text. Exams are to be an individual effort.
GROUP PROJECTS
Students will complete four group projects. Please choose your own groups for the group
projects. There should be 3 to 5 members per group. Groups need not be the same for all
projects. If you are having difficulty finding a group, please notify me before the end of the
second class.
Under some circumstances groups smaller than three may be allowed. Any such exceptions
must be approved by the instructor to avoid a 10% point reduction. A request for an exception
should be communicated to the instructor by the day the project assignment is distributed in
class.
As teams complete the group projects, the instructor will answer questions relating to the
content of the course and questions relating to unclear or ambiguous language in the case.
Please do not ask the instructor to read through your paper prior to turning it in or to indicate
whether or not your analysis is correct.

E-MAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST
Occasionally I will use a class e-mail distribution list or the UD PO Box system to send
messages to the entire class. To receive messages with either of these methods you will need to
either check your UD email account or forward incoming messages to another account you
prefer to use. If you would like to forward your university e-mail to another e-mail address,
you can go to the following web address for help: http://www.udel.edu/help/ click on “E-mail
help” then click on “Forward e-mail to another account” and follow the directions.
E-MAIL
Occasionally valid e-mail is incorrectly directed to my junk e-mail folder. As I receive
enormous quantities of junk e-mail, every few days I use the search function to search subject
lines for 831 rather than reviewing individual messages in the junk folder. To reduce the
chance of my deleting an e-mail from you, please start the Subject line of any messages you
send with 831.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
I take academic integrity seriously. You are expected to maintain high standards of academic
integrity in all aspects of your work in this course. You are expected to know and understand
the University of Delaware Code of Conduct as stated in the student handbook (see Code of
Conduct: Section A - Academic Honesty at http://www.udel.edu/stuguide/09-10/code.html) and
conduct yourself in accordance with this code in all aspects of your work in this course.
Individual Work
When you take an exam, it is expected that all work on the exam is your individual work (no
collaboration with anyone else, and no observation or use of another person’s work) and that it
demonstrates what you have learned without the use of unauthorized resources such as books,
notes in any form, etc. Prior to the time of an exam, it is fine to study together, work end-ofchapter problems together, and so forth. But actually taking the exam must be your individual
effort with no actions or behaviors which would violate the Code of Conduct.
Group Work
For group projects, the paper turned in is expected to be the work product of that group. Group
projects are expected to be completed by the members of the group without collaboration
among groups. For example, sharing or discussing ideas, methods, results, or other work
product is appropriate with your group members, but is not appropriate with individuals outside
of your group.
