This has been such a learning experience for me; the fiber world, planning 8-12 months ahead. It is a very different life than what I had been doing previously. When I studied and taught yoga, I lived very much “in the moment.” Planning an event this size means booking and scheduling the hotel and (some teachers) 1, 2 and 3 years in advance. It is a shift in the way I used to work but the interaction with the people whom I have met in the fiber world has been very gratifying. I have made many friends and am happy to see all of you at our annual fiber reunion! My year has been full, with family obligations, travel, friends and fiber work. The best part of the travel is going to visit other yarn events, trade shows and yarn stores while in other cities. I am always on the lookout for talented people to teach unique and different classes, as well as traditional ones. The creativity of people never ceases to amaze me. It fills me with ideas and is a constant source of inspiration for my own work. This year I am happy to welcome Iris Schreier, founder of ArtYarns. Iris has published several books and will be teaching 4 classes from her books. Her ArtYarns line offers a variety of richly colored luxury yarns including merino wool, silk, mohair and fiber combinations, along with embellished yarns that are enhanced with beads, sequins, gold or silver metallic strands, making them the perfect yarn for accessories, wraps, and shawls. They are lovely to the touch and a feast for the eyes. I discovered another very talented and creative woman who is a fiber artist extraordinaire; Barbara Assejew, who taught for us at the fall Bedford Springs retreat. Barbara will be leading this year’s free class at the festival: the machine needle-felted neck warmer. Barbara is as sweet as she is creative and will be on hand the entire weekend to help you make color selections and explore your creativity. Babylock Machines has graciously supplied us with machines. The staff from Gloria Horn’s Sewing Studios will also assist with the machines and neck warmers. We thank all of the people who contribute and all of our talented teachers in advance for all of their hard work, patience and assistance. The Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival welcomes back Steven Be - teacher, store owner, fiber artist, fashion designer and our rockin’ fashion show Emcee. Steven will be at his booth to share his fantastically creative patterns, ideas and yarns. Don’t miss his fabulous outfits! We love having the “rock star” of the knitting world join us. Each year, we have been fortunate that Coats and Clark sponsors the free Teach Me 2 Knit and Teach Me 2 Crochet classes. Pat Catan’s once again sponsors the Warm Up America! Lounge, supplying attendees with yarn to knit or crochet squares for blankets that are donated to local shelters and other organizations. Hog Heaven is our official skein wider and coat check, please be certain to remember their animals with your kind donations. We continue to be a drop-off point for the Salvation Army’s Annual Fabric Fair and are proud to include the Comfort Scarves Charity in the Warm Up America! Lounge. This year we were also able to offer a Senior Sunday afternoon, graciously made possible by UPMC Senior Communities. Tahki Stacy Charles is a sponsor of the fashion show at this year’s reception. Thanks to Tahki Stacy Charles for providing gifts for Friday evenings attendees and to StevenBe for his patterns. Skacel Collection, Inc. has graciously sent 3 full sets of Addi click needles and accessories for 3 lucky winners. We’ll select one each day and we have many other lovely gifts as giveaways from our sponsors and contributors. The fiber arts continue to grow, thanks in large part to the Internet, where fiber artists can connect with each other in so many ways; Ravelry, Linked In, Twitter, Facebook and blogs. The times they are a changin’ - and so we are trying to keep up with the times, with our regular e-newsletters, monthly free patterns and giveaways. Please be certain to let us know if you are not receiving the newsletter. Although the process is the same, the yarns, they are a changin’ too! The variety of luxurious colors and fiber content, the fabulous patterns for everything from socks to shawls - what a difference from just eight years ago! And yet the techniques are still the same. We all still knit and crochet just like our grandmothers did and we honor the tradition by continuing to make wonderful things for our families and friends to treasure. We like to sit and share stories while we work with our hands, whether it is at a knitting festival, guild meeting, book store, friend’s home, retreat, or at home with our loved ones. I look forward to seeing you at the festival next year, March 15, 16, 17, 2013, or at an upcoming retreat! To make a twisted yarn cord that is 45" long you will need to begin with loops that are 135" long. Loop the yarn around two fixed points such as door knobs or chair spindles. Here's how. 1. Make 40 loops around 2 fixed points, 135" apart. 2. Wrap one of the loose strands of yarn around the 40 loops to hold yarn together and tie the two loose strands together. 3. Slip a plastic crochet hook through the end of the 40 loops. 4. Pull the length of yarn taut and begin twisting until very firm. 5. Keeping the now-twisted yarn taut, find the mid-point and fold in half, bringing the opposite ends together. On longer lengths, when working by yourself, you will need to bend the mid-point around an object that allows you to easily slip off the finished cord. The finished twisted yarn cord will twist on itself. All you need to do is hold ends securely. You may want to guide the cord with your hands as it is twisting. 6. Using a crochet hook, pull one of the loose strands through all loops of the other end. 7. Tie the two strands together. Finishing: 1. Join the three cords at one end. 2. Braid the three yarn cords together. 3. Secure ends and join beginning to end. 4. Tie with double strands of yarn to wire ring. From Finished Cords to Friendship Wreath 1. Join the three cords at one end. 2 2. Braid the three yarn cords together. 3. Secure ends and 4. Tie with double join beginning to end. strands of yarn to wire ring. 23 Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of these instructions. ABOUT HOG HEAVEN Hog Heaven Rescue Farm began in 1998 and was incorporated & established as a not for profit registered 501(c)(3) hoofed animal rescue in 2000. This rescue is a long time dream come true for the founders, Regina Martin and David Allman. You can access more info at: hogheavenrescue.org. OUR MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Hog Heaven Rescue Farm, is to rescue, rehabilitate and foster abused, neglected and unwanted hoofed animals. We take these animals in and provide vet care, feed and farrier care. We work on getting these animals healthy, physically, emotionally &. socially. Then adopt them out to loving forever homes. The farm operates on the funds provided by the co founders, as well as from increasingly generous community donations. ABOUT US David Allman and Regina Martin are both retired Pittsburgh Police Officers that opted for a life in the country. We love taking care of the animals and are rewarded many times over by a nicker, a whinny, and an even a kiss now and then. Regina and David are certified in Large Animal Emergency Rescue &. Response. OUR PHILOSOPHY We believe that the animals God has put in our hands need to be taken care of when their life turns bad. Horses, donkeys and mules have been instrumental in our lives as far back as you care to look. You can find them working beside man and providing whatever assistance needed in the bible, the wars, and working the fields. We feel that mankind owes them a good life. OUR PURPOSE Our purpose is to provide food, water, shelter and veterinary care to any hoofed animal that were abused, neglected, injured, sick, slaughter bound, or when owners can no longer keep or care for them. We assist with cruelty investigations in cooperation with local humane societies and law enforcement. We also work with other rescues, horse clubs and facilities such as PIVSU rescue, to help place these orphan animals into new loving and caring homes. We are an endowments to keep going for as long as it is needed to serve the animals, all volunteer organization filled with caring individuals. OUR GOAL Our goal is to help as many animals as possible. To attempt to alleviate or eliminate abuse, through education and awareness by promoting humane ethics. And to relieve suffering and provide for humane treatment of all animais in need. It us our hope that someday, organizations like ours are no longer needed. We also have dreams to keep HHRF open after our demise so our goal is to get endowments to keep HHRF going for as long as it is needed to serve the animais. 18 7 8 17 Thank You for your continued support and generous donation of yarn for the Annual Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival www.berroco.com 16 9 10 15 Where 'Knit' Happens 22586 Rt 68 Clarion, PA 16214 http://www.cabotcheese.coop/ 814-229-1598 www.bewetifulknits.com 2012 Three Rivers Quilt Show 2012 Them - Irish Chain Show Dates: Thurs-Saturday: March 29-31, 2012 Entries Welcome, forms due: Monday, February 20, 2012 The Circuit Center & Ballroom Five Hot Metal Street – in Pittsburgh’s South Side Visit our website for entry forms & show information: http://www.threeriversquilters.org We thank UNIVERSAL YARNS and Last Knitter Standing for their support and donations. 14 11 Barb : gallery_aflame.jpg www.stylehive.com 512428905_53b518bb25_z.jpg www.flickr.com 4385405683_a9352f5063_z.jpg?zz=1 www.flickr.com ON FIBER In eight short years, the Festival has moved beyond a focus on knitting to celebrate the entire world of fiber. And how that world has grown! When I think back to our very first festival, we had a sheep on site and a wool exhibit showing the transformation of raw fleece into finished yarn. And then, just a few years ago, we had a fiber exhibit that featured not only wool, but alpaca, mohair, buffalo, qiviut (musk ox), cashmere, angora and silk. gallery_aflame.jpg www.stylehive.com There are unlimited possibilities for what yarn can be made of. We are all familiar with silk and cotton, and various blends of polyester and rayons, novelties, and sparkly. But yarns are also being made from Tencel (tree bark), soy, corn, milk, bamboo. I read recently about a woman who has been making yarn from the kudzu plant. She has been weaving with it and claims that it is very sturdy. Kudos to her for making good use of this invasive plant, which has taken over the hillsides of our southern states! 3403751262_e174c7a288.jpg feltingforum.blogspot.com 4649871958_5cff8c8734_z.jpg www.flickr.com Granted, yarn, felt and fiber have been around for centuries. But it is only in recent years that the process and interpretation have changed. We are using fiber not just for wearables but for works of art. Fiber artists all over the world are creating imaginative pieces and installations— some of them aesthetically pleasing, and others just plain funky! The Knitter’s Book of Wool by Clara Parkes is the ultimate guide to understanding, using, and loving this most fabulous and dependable fiber. Clara introduces us to 37 different kinds of sheep and explains the properties of the yarn that they produce. (Perhaps she will consider writing a book about fibers from other animals and nonliving sources!) So, three cheers for the exciting past, present and future of fiber! I hope your journey into the wonderful world of fiber is as enjoyable as mine. feltandsilveranemonepin.jpg cusandcus.blogspot.com il_430xN.97858443.jpg bellavitahome.blogspot.com 6220222808_200bf41480.jpg www.flickriver.com photograph courtesy of Suzanne Tidwell knitbus.jpg, blog.freepeople.com naturetabletree-small-452x415.jpg felting.craftgossip.com CandissColeFootitt_shakespherelongcoatfront.jpg www.americancraftmag.org pinkrose2web.jpg sabiiwabii.blogspot.com yarn+bomb+banksy.jpg amyhallknitwear.blogspot.com Yarn-Bombing-Graffiti-Art-3.jpg www.bitrebels.com But there’s more.
