MESSAGE FROM THE
MUSIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our glorious celebration of community
and the holidays, “The Magic of Christmas”, in which
the Symphony is joined onstage by literally hundreds
of our region’s most gifted young performers. I trust
you will enjoy this festive tradition which is perfect for
the whole family.
I encourage you to join us for the rest of our
2014-15 season. Every concert features timeless
masterpieces and extraordinary new works,
dazzling solo artists and our own magnificent
Albany Symphony musicians. In October, we began
our unforgettable season with a mainly-Russian
concert. From a celebration of that unsung hero of
the orchestra, the tuba, in February to a roots-music
celebration featuring the amazing cross-over artists
of “Time for Three” in April, I promise you a season of
glorious music new and old. We will be performing
many of the greatest works in the repertoire, by
Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms,
Dvořák and many others, while introducing thrilling
new pieces by many of today’s very best composers,
including Michael Torke, Michael Daugherty, Jennifer
Higdon, Derek Bermel and Clint Needham. We will
also be embarking on an exciting new residency
project with the six brilliant young composers of
“Sleeping Giant.” And we’ll be pursuing our next
Grammy win by recording important, never-beforerecorded works by Torke, Daugherty and Bermel.
12 / albanysymphony.org
As always, our season will end with our
monumental American Music Festival, which this
year explores the theme of “Migrations.” We will
be partnering with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra for
Derek Bermel’s amazing “Migration Series,” which
celebrates the African-American migrations of
the 1940s through a searing, achingly beautiful
evocation of 1940s jazz. We’ll be announcing many
new and exciting feature of the Festival throughout
the season, so stay tuned! Our series of three awardwinning Sunday Symphonies for Families began on
November 23rd and continues on February 1st at
Zankel Hall. If you haven’t brought your children,
grandchildren or young friends to enjoy these joyous,
fun-filled programs, I hope you’ll give them a try.
Thanks to the generosity of our dear friend,
Dr. Heinrich Medicus, our season opened with a
very special evening with one of the world’s greatest
performing artists, Joshua Bell. In addition, all of
our Albany Symphony concerts now regularly feature
the music world’s most significant established and
emerging artists as soloists. If you don’t yet know
the names of Caroline Goulding, Amy Porter or Carol
Jantsch, you are in for a great treat! We are also
delighted to welcome back audience favorites Colin
Currie, Joyce Yang, Julie Albers and our very dear
friends in Albany Pro Musica.
Without a doubt, the most exciting aspect of all
our concerts is the opportunity to hear our brilliant
Albany Symphony musicians, live! The orchestra has
become a world-class ensemble, as is evident from
last season’s Grammy win. The sound our orchestra
makes is absolutely gorgeous. I hope you’ll come
back over and over again throughout the season to
experience the sheer sonic glory of our extraordinary
musicians.
To all of you who attend our concerts and
support us in so many ways, thank you. You make
our music possible. We love our sophisticated,
passionate Albany Symphony audience, and we are
very proud to serve you. I hope you will join us for
all of our concerts this season, as we continue our
thrilling new musical adventure.
Warm Regards,
David Alan Miller, Music Director
Happy Holidays!
Our glorious Magic of Christmas concert brilliantly
heralds the holiday season. The Albany Symphony
is honored to share the stage with hundreds
of amazingly talented young performers from
throughout the Capital Region, all brought together
in a magnificent program, created by Sherley
Hannay’s inspired vision. We extend great thanks
to Sherley and Roger Hannay for supporting this
annual tradition, a celebration full of spirit and joy.
Join us throughout the year as we celebrate our
85th anniversary. We began with a dazzling Joshua
Bell concert, made possible by Dr. Heinrich Medicus
and by you. We thank and celebrate you, our longstanding patrons and also our newest friends. Your
loyalty, generosity, adventurous spirit, and sheer love
of music fuel our enduring success. We are celebrating the artistry and skill of
our outstanding musicians. We are celebrating
our artistic triumphs, including our first Grammy
award in January, and our 31st ASCAP award in
June (more than any other orchestra has received).
We also were awarded significant grants from the
Mellon Foundation, New York’s REDC, and others
who support our adventurous programming. This
national recognition has strengthened our
commitment to champion new work by America’s
most celebrated composers, including mentor
composer Michael Daugherty, composer-educator
Clint Needham, and the amazing six-composer
collective Sleeping Giant. This influx of creative
talent energizes and renews the cultural landscape
of the Capital Region, all thanks to the inspired
vision of our beloved Maestro David Alan Miller.
You can feel the pulse of that creative energy
beyond our concert halls —at engaging preconcert talks, with fellow music lovers at our social
gatherings, with musicians in classroom visits, at
songwriting workshops where guest composers
empower middle school students to tell their
stories —and in many other synergistic collaborations
we have with arts, educational, social service, and
business partners across our community.
This year’s theme of Migrations was prompted
by the concerto “Migration Series,” a centerpiece
of this year’s Festival, inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s

paintings. In turn, David Alan Miller encourages us
to explore and share our own ancestral heritage.
Together, we will celebrate the rich tapestry created
by our diverse and colorful experiences. Throughout this season—full of treasured
classics, cutting-edge world premieres, a bit of
bluegrass, baroque, and jazz—the music will
energize us, weave through us, and connect us.
All of this is possible only because of you.
At this time of year, please join me in making a
meaningful gift to ensure that the Albany Symphony
continues to deeply enrich one and all in our
community.
With warmest wishes for a beautiful holiday season
and bright new year,
Marisa Eisemann, MD

ALBANY SYMPHONY MUSICIAN
HOUSING PROGRAM
Did you know that many of the musicians of the Albany Symphony do not live in the Capital
Region? Musicians travel from New York, Boston even as far as Montreal to play with the Albany
Symphony. Typically when a musician comes to play here they are here Thursday night through
Sunday. Through the generosity of local donors The Albany Symphony Musician Housing Program
was created. This is a critical part of our organization which enables us to attract musicians of the
highest caliber. Without the generosity and support of our host families we would not be able to
maintain the high caliber of musicians who are members of our orchestra. Many of our hosts have
created strong bonds with the musicians that stay with them, creating friendships that will last a
lifetime. Charles Buchanan has been hosting musicians since 2009. Below are some insights into
his experience as a host.
How long have you been hosting
musicians of the Albany Symphony?
Since 2009, so this will be my 6th year
as a host.
What is your favorite part
of hosting musicians?
My favorite part of hosting (besides getting
to know the musicians, who are all extremely
talented and distinctly unique individuals)
is when I am sitting in my home on Saturday
mornings, reading the paper and drinking
coffee and the sounds of the instruments fill
the house as the musicians practice for the
evening performance.
One of my recent musicians apologized
before he practiced for “disturbing me”,
and I told him that he has to practice
on Saturday morning. It is a requirement,
passed down from David Alan Miller, and
I am to report him if he doesn’t practice!
Why do you think other people should
consider being hosts?
I think hosting is an important part of the
ways in which people can contribute to
the Albany Symphony. It would be good to
have extra hosts if possible because there
are months that I am away and cannot host,
and I’m sure the other hosts have similar
circumstances.
People who should consider it are those who
have adult children who have moved out, or
are away at college (the Albany Symphony
schedule coincides with the college
semesters).
I know, for me, it is a good excuse to clean
the upstairs bedrooms once in a while.
We hope that you will consider becoming
a member of the Albany Symphony
Musician Housing Program. If you are
interested please contact Susan Libby,
Personnel Manager & Housing Coordinator

We take so much for granted.
We trust the sun will rise in the morning, the moon will come up at night and
the live music performed by the Albany Symphony Orchestra will always be
available for an evening’s entertainment or a children’s concert. Well we can
be as sure as we are of anything that the sun will rise and the moon will light
the evening skies. Whether the enchanting, inspiring live music of the Albany
Symphony Orchestra will always be available for an evening out or a children’s
concert depends on you and me and so many more like us.
Vanguard helps to raise funds to make that music possible. Dedicated
women and men spend countless hours planning and executing a myriad of
fundraising activities throughout the year. Our members usher at concerts,
provide gift bags to visiting artists, and house musicians. They secure muchneeded funds to pay for tickets and transportation for children who might not
otherwise ever be exposed to the thrill of a live performance orchestrated just
for them. Vanguard collects gently used instruments and has them refurbished
for local schools to utilize in their music programs. Maybe the next Joshua
Bell or Yo-Yo Ma will be inspired by an instrument that he or she might never
had access to. Vanguard also provides and serves food to the musicians on
the night of concerts. But those things are just a few of the wonderful services
Vanguard offers to the Symphony and the community.
All of these wonderful activities that Vanguard engages in help to defray the
costs that might otherwise burden the Orchestra.

"We’re All From Somewhere" Else Project
At the American Music Festival in May, Clint Needham will debut a new piece, "We’re All From
Somewhere Else”. The capstone of our season—the American Music Festival—celebrates the music of
our time, showcasing the work of living composers. This year, the Festival will illustrate our country's
colorful, sometimes sad, yet vibrant endurance through the theme of “Migrations.” The “We’re All From
Somewhere Else” Project is our effort to make subscribers part of the story! We all have a rich history,
whether it begins here in the Capital Region, or somewhere else. We will highlight patron, staff, and
musician stories in our programs leading up to the Festival. Enjoy the stories, and please share yours
with us! We will display all submitted stories at the American Music Festival this spring.

“I’m From Somewhere Else.
My Journey to the World of Classical Music.”
by Edwin Osterhout
Being born in 1932 to a very poor family in a very small village, I was never exposed to any
cultural pursuits including literature and classical music; but even though there were no books
nor recordings in our home, my mother took me to get a library card as soon as I entered first
grade. This, with encouragement from my parents and teachers, led me to appreciate the value
of a good education. Upon graduation from high school in 1950, I was accepted to New York
State College for Teachers at Albany (the only college I could afford sincere there was no tuition
and I could commute by trains and bus). Even though Valley Falls was less than 30 miles north
of Albany, the only other time I had been there was to attend Albany Senators games at Hawkins
Stadium. When I got off the United Traction bus my first day of classes, I recall looking at those
buildings and thinking, “What the hell am I doing here?”
In my freshman year I was befriended by an upper class girl who lived in Albany and had
graduated from Albany Academy for Girls. She had a wealth of cultural knowledge (literature,
classical music, travel, etc.) and also had a collection of classical recordings and a phonograph
on which to play them. She first introduced me to the ballet music of Copland and gradually
introduced me to Elgar, Beethoven, Sibelius and others, and eventually Wagner’s operas (her
favorites). Looking back, I realize now that she was leading me from lighter classical to heavier
works. Elfrieda died a few years ago, but I’ll always remember her as the one who introduced
me to good music.
Sixty years have passed since my college graduation, and my wife, Carol, and I have
attended performances in Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Paris Opera House, St.
Martin in the Fields Church, the Met, Carnegie Hall, and venues in Vienna, Prague, Budapest,
Peking, Florence, Buenos Aires, and others, including seeing Turandot in the Olympic Stadium
in Rome. (Not bad for a poor boy from a small town!) On our travels, as soon as we arrive in
a city, we check to see what classical music is being performed, and immediately see the hotel
concierge to get tickets. Our classical music exposure has been greatly enhanced by attending
the Albany Symphony concerts and David Miller’s preconcert lectures. Thank The Albany
Symphony—and Elfrieda.

Lyrics
HARK THE HERALD
ANGELS SING
Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
SILENT NIGHT
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin, mother and child
Holy infant, so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
AWAY IN A MANGER
Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing,
The poor baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying he makes
I love Thee, Lord Jesus,
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
‘Til morning is nigh.
DEC.
DECK THE HALLS
Deck the halls with boughs
of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Troll the ancient Yule tide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la. 7

LYRICS
O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL
O Come All Ye Faithful
Joyful and triumphant,
Oh come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of angels
(Refrain)
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
O Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing all that hear in heaven God’s holy
word.
Give to our Father glory in the Highest;

The Music Studio
The Music Studio, located in
Albany, New York, has been
BIOGRAPHIES
providing a comprehensive music
& ROSTERS
education to area students for more
than 35 years. Noel Liberty, the
school’s founder and director, created the school’s
singular curriculum based on her research in both
piano pedagogy and early childhood education.
She believed that children could begin to learn
serious musical concepts at a very young age, and
in fact that their youth allowed them to embrace all
elements of music—the social, physical, intellectual,
creative, and emotional—with uninhibited joy.
3:00 PM
The Music Studio has graduated more than 14,000
students since its founding in 1977, and has
grown into the premier music school in the region,
attracting students from as far north as Wilton
and as far south as Hudson. It has added summer
classes and camps, group classes for adults, and
short-term classes for very young children (all of
which are detailed at TheMusicStudio.com), but its
core remains its celebrated school-year program.
The program begins with The Foundation, small
classes for young children who proceed through

a carefully constructed curriculum to master the
fundamentals of music theory, ear training, and
piano playing. Students then move on to The Piano
Program, which features private instruction with
a member of the school’s highly trained faculty.
Private students receive not just one-on-one
lessons, but also group theory classes, workshops
with professional musicians, evaluations by outside
judges, field trips to classical performances, and
frequent performance opportunities. They are also
eligible to audition for The Music Studio Kids, the
troupe that is performing for you this evening.
The Music Studio Kids, who range in age from 7
to 18 , perform choral and Orff ensemble works
in venues through the Capital Region, including
the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Palace
Theatre, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, the Saratoga
Race Course, the Joe Bruno Stadium, and many
more. Like their fellow Music Studio classmates—
and alumni too—they work hard in the pursuit
of perfection, and they tend to flourish in their
musical and academic endeavors. Even better,
they carry with them a deep understanding and an
abiding love of music.

BIOGRAPHIES

The Libertina Dance Company was
founded as a society where artists
and dancers alike could come
together and inspire each other to create. Much like
a Salon Noir was to the Victorians, Libertina Dance
is an intriguing group that adheres to the concept
that "Archaic, unrestrained, ideas" lead the mind to
enlightenment, birth of new thought, and evolution
within movement. Libertina is exciting, new, inventive
and on the forefront of new dance.

THE FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS!
To keep orchestral music alive in our community, and to
ensure that future generations experience the joy of this
art form, won’t you please consider the Albany Symphony
when planning your estate? In addition to naming the
Albany Symphony in your will, there are several ways you
can do this:
Charitable Bequest: Several types are possible including
Charitable Remainder Trusts, Pooled Income Funds,
Charitable Lead Trusts, Charitable Gift Annuities and Annual
Exclusion Gifts.
Retirement or Pension Plan: You can name the Albany
Symphony as a beneficiary of your pension plan or IRA. This
can help reduce estate and income taxes which might be
due on these investments.
Life Insurance: You can name the Albany Symphony as the
beneficiary of a new or existing insurance policy.
Add a POD or TOD Designation: Add a “pay on death”
(POD) or “transfer on death” (TOD) designation to a bank
or brokerage account, naming the Albany Symphony
to receive the assets.
To discuss these or other planned giving options,
please contact:
