The sky was looking daunting (Thursday July 24th) but a few brave ones met at Rock Park for the Yard and Garden Tour. John and Florence Pituley’s yard was first on our list. Then off to Dara and Melvin Ellis’. The sky grew dark, the wind picked up and everyone ran for cover as the storm hit. However after awhile the sun came out and we continued on . . . Garry Tucker gave us a tour of his yard and garden. Who knew there were 16 varieties of potatoes? From there we wandered over to Dick and Barb Prefontaine’s, out to Marilyn and Terry Remoue’s and then to Teresa Davidson’s yard. We toured Ron and Marny Paterson’s yard and finished up at Marina Pilsner’s. After touring her yard she had coffee and goodies for us. It turned out to be a great evening that was enjoyed by all. Each yard demonstrated unique character, attractiveness and confirmed the hard work done by their owners. THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO ALLOWED US TO STROLL THROUGH YOUR YARDS. PRUNE YOUR ELMS The annual restriction on pruning elm trees in Saskatchewan ended August 31. Starting September 1, homeowners are encouraged to prune their elms to help keep them healthy. Each year, pruning of elm trees is prohibited from April 1 to August 31 to reduce the risk of Dutch Elm Disease (DED). The elm bark beetles that spread the deadly disease are most active during this period, and fresh cuts tend to attract them. Regular pruning, outside the ban period, helps keep trees healthy and better able to resist all types of disease, including DED. Removing dead wood also makes trees less attractive to elm bark beetles. Early fall can be a good time for tree maintenance, with generally more pleasant and predictable weather than early spring. Having leaves still on the trees makes it easier to spot and remove dead or unhealthy branches. Improper pruning techniques can spread DED and other tree diseases, so it’s important to prune correctly, whether you hire someone or choose to do it yourself. Under the provincial DED regulations, commercial pruners of elm trees must complete a recognized training program or be supervised by someone who has. Due to the risk of spreading DED, transporting or storing elm firewood is illegal. Any elm wood should be disposed of promptly, by burning or burying it in a location approved by the local municipality. For more information on designated disposal areas and common practices in your area, check with your local municipal authority. For more information about Dutch Elm Disease, or to report a suspicious tree, contact the Ministry of Environment’s general inquiry line at 1-800-567-4224. The club’s overall grand aggregate placing for the show was 5th. Light Horse The Rockglen Multiple 4-H Club has been fortunate to have Wendy Ching as the light horse project leader for the past 10 years. Wendy has worked hard to keep us informed, organized and ensured that our horse riding skills have grown through out every project year. This was her last year as our leader and we really appreciate her dedication and would like to say “THANK YOU”! Some highlights from our 2013/14 year: we had sessions on arena etiquette, safety, grooming, deworming and vaccinating. We also had two clinics with clinicians. The weather looked to be questionable for our Achievement Day which was held in the Rockglen arena on August 17th however it turned out to be a great weather day for horse riding. We had four classes: horsemanship, pleasure, trail and showmanship. The kids also got to practice their judging skills as each age category along with two parents were assigned to judge another age category. Everyone had a great show. The overall placing’s for the year are based on the attendance at project meetings, record books and results of the horse show. The year overall placing’s for each category were as follows: Cloverbud – 1st Casey, 2nd McCoy, 3rd Cooper, 4th Kade, 5th Cashton Junior – 1st Jeneva, 2nd Christina, 3rd Tyler, 4th Gus, 5th Dakoda Intermediate – 1st Jamie, 2nd Jordan Senior – 1st Wyatt, 2nd (tie) Lindsey and Riley Rodeo – 4H Food Concession Our 4H club will be running a food concession from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the High School Rodeo at the Rockglen arena on Saturday, October 4th and Sunday, October 5th. Come watch the rodeo action, join us for lunch or supper and have fresh homemade baking treats. 2014/2015 4-H Registration Meeting Sunday, November 9th at 4:00 pm The registration meeting for the Rockglen 4H Club (beef and horse projects) will be at 4 pm on Sunday, November 9th at the Faith Harvest Fellowship Church. If you can't attend, you must contact Tom Monea, General Leader prior to the meeting. We also will be electing officers and have our first general meeting. If it isn't too late, Linda would like to follow with a beef project meeting on ultra-sounding. Wood Mountain Regional Park The park season is over again for another year. The park board hopes everyone enjoyed their time spent with us and wishes to thank everyone for their patience and understanding in regards to the lifeguard shortage and reduced swimming hours. We all long for the day when we had too many applicants for available jobs and qualifications to spare, but that hasn’t been the case lately. We recognize that things are not ideal and are hoping to make changes to provide even better service next year. Watch your mailbox for this fall’s and next spring’s newsletter for more information and keep yourself informed with our Facebook page. We are always looking for board members and non-board members with good ideas/projects they would like to contribute. Speaking of which, Laurie Disney has made a beautiful quilt and donated it to the park in memory of Sherry Mielke. Tickets are on sale at GHC and the quilt can be viewed at various functions in the WMRP area. Proceeds are going to the construction of a set of bleachers for seating/viewing at the swimming pool and we hope to have this constructed by next summer. Your support would be greatly appreciated!! Wesley United Church News Our first Soup With Friends of this church season was held on September 4th. Twenty-nine people gathered for lunch and visiting which was fantastic. We hope that was an indication of the possibility of us reaching even greater numbers at future gatherings. Our next Soup With Friends will be on nd October 2 at noon in the church basement. Come and share in the good times. As I write this article plans are underway for our Annual Fall Supper (Sept. 28th at the Community Hall). By the time you read this the Supper will be over. I thank you in advance as I am sure it will be a successful undertaking. Thank you to all of the people whose efforts made the Supper a wonderful event: the organizers, set up people, cooks, donators, shoppers, promoters, workers, and also all of the attendees. Thank you for caring and for all that you have done. We are most appreciative of everyone’s help. Worship services at Wesley United will be held every Sunday morning at 11:00 A.M. at least until the end of 2014. During this time, Rev. Marilyn Leuty of Assiniboia will continue to take care of all of the people of Borderlands Pastoral Charge. Hopefully everyone is getting to know and recognize Rev. Marilyn. She can be reached on her cell at 640 – 6910 at any time. In December we will re-evaluate our situation and this working arrangement with Marilyn and with the Assiniboia Pastoral Charge. Have you noticed something new about our church? You have to look up, way up … and you will see an awesome new metal roof. Thank you to Joe and Kayla Hochlander for doing a superb job of installing it for us. Thank you also to: Russell and Jeanette Belbeck, the waitresses (Starla, Sandra, Angie, Rita, Jane, and Carla), the donators (of cash or of the delicious dessert), and to all of the people who attended our roof fundraiser fried chicken smorg at the Burning Hills Café back in June. It was our Celebrate the Arrival of Summer Smorg. The meal was excellent, just like a church picnic but indoors. Thank you everyone for the support. Working together we were able to raise the roof as you now see. Over the last few months our church and its grounds have been very well taken care of. Thank you very much to all of the special people who have been doing this work. We really appreciate your kindness. Rockglen St. John’s Catholic Parish Fr. Mrs. Jasmin McKenzie has been hired as our full time science/math teacher. Welcome Mrs. McKenzie! Prairie South Schools (PSS) welcomes our New Director of Education, Mr. Tony Baldwin. Tony has been a teacher, principal, and Superintendent in our neighbouring school division of Sun West. He brings much enthusiasm for life and learning to his new role as Director of Education. At the end of this month we will bid farewell to Margaret McKee our Head Facility Operator. Margaret has served our school community for the past 12 years, cleaning behind everyone at the end of the day and making sure we have a top notch facility to return to each morning. We can’t thank her enough for all the hard work in making our school one of the cleanest and shiniest in the school division. With Margaret’s farewell we are excited to welcome Marilyn McKee to the position of HFO. Marilyn gained valuable insight into the position from being a casual facility operator here and in Coronach for the past couple of years. Welcome Marilyn! Rockglen students and staff will continue to work on our School Learning Improvement Plan (LIP) including our goals to focus on reading comprehension across all grades. Our teachers will continue to work in Learning Improvement Teams (LITs) which will help us to better respond to the learning needs of our students from K-12. Our first LIT meeting (early dismissal) will be Monday, September 29th for the entire school division. The LIT dates are coloured blue on the school calendar that was sent home at the end of June. If you have misplaced your copy please let Mrs. Yorga know and she can get you another copy. Our School Community Council (SCC) is excited to support our school goals by planning many activities to take place throughout the year that compliment reading and to encourage students and families to read for fun! Volleyball practices have started and league games are underway. Our school has a full slate of bantam and senior teams under the coaching direction of our dedicated staff as well as Brianna Sanguin; who is coaching our senior girls’ team. We invite the community to come out for some great volleyball action and to show your Rockglen Raider pride! Our next home action takes place this week with the bantam boys playing host to Assiniboia Elementary and Coronach on October 1st. Other home action will take place on October 7th, 9th, 21st, 23rd and 28th. Go RAIDERS!! We kicked off our fall fundraiser on Tuesday, September 23rd with the QSP magazine campaign. Your support over the past years has been tremendous and we are hoping for a similar response this year. If you purchased magazines last year from us or anywhere else, you are able to renew your subscription this year. Proceeds from this year’s campaign will be used for school improvement projects and student leadership activities. If you would like to make a cash donation instead of a magazine purchase, you may also do so. A receipt will be provided from the school. We will also follow this fundraiser with a QSP cookie dough and gift order campaign for those that prefer these sorts of items instead of magazines. Once again, thank you in advance for supporting Rockglen School and our students. From Rockglen School to your home and family we wish you all the best for an excellent school year!
