Because They Can’t
Speak for Themselves
People driving by the pasture were alarmed at the sight of
horses and goats on fenced land near Guildford, Mo. The animals were so
thin that their ribs were showing. They reported their concerns to Sheriff
Bryan Atkins, and the sheriff called the Humane Society of Missouri.
Working in cooperation with the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department,
the Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) rescued the 37 starving animals
(29 horses, six mini-horses and two goats) on November 11, 2010. The
emaciated animals had no access to healthy food or fresh water. Two
recently deceased horses also were found on the property, literally
starved to death.
Two other horses were so severely underweight they were in immediate
danger of dying. They were taken directly to an equine hospital; all the others
were transported to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch near Union, Mo.
“Taking the animals out of here knowing they’ll be
safe now is the greatest feeling I could have,” said Brian
Williams, animal cruelty investigator, Humane Society
of Missouri.
Safe Haven
Founded in 1988 and operated by the Humane Society of
Missouri, Longmeadow Rescue Ranch has earned a national
reputation for its excellence and dedication to abused and
neglected horses and farm animals.
In the early days of the ranch, one or two rescues a year was
the norm. Over the next 20 years, the number rose to 20 or 30
rescues annually. It continues to grow, in large part because
the number of law enforcement officers who know about the
expertise of HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force and
Longmeadow Rescue Ranch continues to increase. The ranch
is a safe haven for up to as many as 350 animals at a time.
As was the case with the Andrew County animals, new
arrivals are usually underweight and sometimes injured. Often the animals are wary of people,
for obvious reasons.
“This is the first time that most animals have been around caring humans,” noted Amanda
Mullen, ranch director. “It’s our job to build trust so they can be adopted.”

Mission
Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri
has been dedicated to second chances.
We provide a safe and caring haven to all
animals in need—large and small—that have
been abused, neglected or abandoned.
Our mission is to end the cycle of abuse and
pet overpopulation through our rescue and
investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs
and educational classes. We are committed to
creating lasting relationships between people
and animals through our adoption programs
and our shelter pet training program.
We further support that bond by making
available world-class veterinary care.

Missouri Votes “Yes” to End Puppy Mill Cruelty;
Legislators Poised to Ignore the People’s Will
Last November
dogs in Missouri’s
substandard puppy
mills achieved a
great victory.
The hard work, dedication
and “Yes to Prop B” votes of
many HSMO donors and
supporters gave dogs used for
commercial breeding a real
chance for a decent life.
Now, before this law even
takes effect, some Missouri
legislators want to repeal it.
They say voters didn’t
understand the act’s provisions
or were duped. This is an
insult to voters who clearly
understood the need for
improved standards of care for
dogs used for profit-making
purposes. For years, the
legislature would not deal with
this problem. Now, when the
majority of Missourians have
dealt directly with this issue,
some legislators want to defy
the will of the people.
When the Puppy Mill
Cruelty Prevention Act
(PMCPA) becomes law late
this year, dogs in commercial
breeding facilities will:
• have room to stretch and
move more freely in their
cages and exercise outside
instead of living their entire
lives in a space just 6” larger
than their bodies.
• receive annual, hands-on
veterinary exams and prompt
treatment for injuries and
disease instead of a cursory,
facility “look-see” with no
individual exams.
• Be able to stand on a solid
surface instead of a wirebottom cage which causes
injury to paws and legs.
If the PMCPA is repealed,
tens of thousands of dogs
will continue to suffer. We
cannot allow this to happen.
We must act now to ensure a
good future for the dogs
from which people profit.
We won a victory for
puppy mill dogs last year.
With your assistance, we
can ensure the suffering will
end for breeding animals in
desperate need of help.

Preparing Horses for Adoption
Once an abused or neglected horse has
reached a healthy weight and received calming
TLC from the staff, it’s time for Longmeadow
Rescue Ranch Trainer Scott Jaycox to work
his magic. Horses are evaluated for their level
of training before beginning the program.
Jaycox starts literally at step one: coaxing
horses to accept a friendly human touch.
From there, he uses the five training levels
of the Natural Horsemanship Method.
Depending on past training and temperament, horses require several months to a year
to complete all five levels. After adoption,
owners can take advanced training, for an
additional fee, at Longmeadow Rescue
Ranch or the horse’s new home.

Sheriff Decries Animal
Neglect and Abuse
Once they arrived at Longmeadow, the
horses and goats were quarantined while
they were weighed, de-wormed and
examined by a veterinarian. Their diet was
set and immediate medical needs looked
after. All horses also required dental care.
Rehab Can Be Lengthy and Expensive
“It takes a huge investment to rehab horses,” explained
Mullen. “In rescues like Andrew County, the animals require
months of specialized diets, vaccinations and other veterinary
procedures. Anyone who raises large animals can attest to
the substantial cost of taking proper care of them.”
“We do these things for the animals because they can’t
speak for themselves,” she added.
Carmen Skelly, statewide investigator for the Humane
Society of Missouri had this to say on site at the November
rescue: “It’s a privilege and honor to pull these horses out
of danger, take them to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and
know they are going to be well cared for. Last night was
their last bad night.”

Andrew County Sheriff Bryan Atkins
watched approvingly while rescuers from the
Humane Society of Missouri loaded starving
horses and goats for transport to Longmeadow
Rescue Ranch. Atkins sought help from our
Animal Cruelty Task Force after personally
seeing the emaciated animals knee-deep in
mud in a barren pasture.
The sheriff, who raises livestock, was so
appalled at the animals’ condition that he
delivered two large bales of his own hay. Atkins
also brought an independent veterinarian to the
property who determined the animals could
not survive the winter without intervention.
Atkins sharply criticized the absentee
owners for neglecting their animals to the point
of starvation.
“I am letting people know that if you’re
going to own large animals or a large number
of animals, you need to afford to take care of
them, to spend time with them, to feed them
and properly care for them,” he said. “If not,
we may be doing this again.”

Meet a Volunteer
Who Can’t Decide
If you are
looking for a Jill of
All Trades, look no
further than longtime volunteer
Fran Beezley. Since
1988, she has been
involved with
volunteer duties
ranging from the
Veterinary Clinic
to Pet Pal dog walker
to foster parent and
the Greater St. Louis
Training Club. It’s hard for her to pick what her
favorite part of volunteering is!
Fran first became involved with the Humane
Society after her husband passed away. She
was looking for something to occupy her on
weekends and thought that helping dogs, which
she’s always loved, would be a good fit. She
was certainly right.
Angel, Fran’s fur child, graciously shares
her home with lots of foster pets and frequently
accompanies her to the Humane Society. Having
been a volunteer for 22 years, Fran has seen the
foster and Pet Pal programs grow tremendously.
“Sometimes we all get tired and upset but we
remember how much good we do. It all comes
from a deep love of the animals.”

dogs, other predators and
inhumane people.
Provide adequate
shelter. If your dog lives
outdoors, you must provide
a well-insulated and draftfree doghouse. (It’s the law.)
B-r-r-r-!
If it’s too cold for
you, it’s too cold
for your pet.
Bring dogs inside.
Don’t leave them outside in
the cold for long periods of
time or they can develop
frostbite on ears, tails and
feet. If you run with your
dog, be attentive to cold
paws and leave Fido at home
when it is too cold.
Always keep cats
inside. “Outside” cats are
often the victims of cars,
Provide plenty of food
and water. It takes more
energy in the winter to keep
body temperature regulated,
so your pet needs additional
calories if he or she spends
a lot of time outdoors.
Check and refill outside
bowls often. Snow is not
a substitute for water.
Beware of anti-freeze
and rock salt. Anti-freeze
smells and tastes good to
your pet, but is lethal. If
you suspect your pet has
ingested it, contact your
veterinarian immediately!
Rock salt can irritate
footpads. Be sure to rinse
and dry your pet’s feet
after being outside.
Dry off wet pets.
Towel or blow-dry pets
when they get wet from
rain or snow. Dry and
clean paws to prevent tiny
cuts and cracked pads.
Bundle up. Short- or
coarse-haired dogs might
get too cold; consider a
sweater or a coat.
Groom regularly.
Well-groomed coats keep
animals properly insulated.
Long-haired dogs should
have their paw hair clipped
to ease snow removal and
cleaning their feet.

A device the size of a grain of rice reunited
Rocket with his family 18 months after the
feline went missing.
“The cat was brought to us by a good
Samaritan who found it near her home,” said
Tammi Britton, shelter manager at the
Chesterfield Valley Center. “We scanned him
and were happy to find a microchip.”
Using the unique serial number on the tiny
device, the shelter staff easily located the Jacun
family (Heather and David and sons Sam, Dave
and Noah).
The owners wanted to be happy but instead
were dubious. After all, their nine-year-old pet
had been lost for a year and a half, just after their
move to Ballwin from University City.
“We couldn’t believe it at first,” said Heather
Jacun. “We asked them to check again because
Rocket is missing half his tail. They did, and it
was our boy.” The Jacuns joyfully picked up their
old friend the day after Thanksgiving.
“He knew us right away, and our Boxer Tessa
definitely remembered Rocket. She immediately
cleaned his whole face,” laughed Heather Jacun.
“We were so happy to find the cat’s
family,” said Britton. “He is our ‘poster boy’ for
the microchip system.”

Winter 2011
Jeff and Lisa Pugh, their son Steve (far left) and daughter Lori (right),
raised Shelby from a puppy. When they decided their “only dog” needed
a playmate, they found brindle Boxer Nova at the Westport Area Adoption
Center. Beau came from owners who realized that with long commutes
and two young children they were not giving him the care he deserved.
Skilled Surgeon
Constructs New
Ligament for Boxer
Lisa and Jeff Pugh noticed their Boxer Shelby
limping on the stairs. It was surprising because
the pet they’d raised from a puppy was barely
three years old. Since they were already bringing
Shelby to the Humane Society for veterinary
care, they made an appointment.
After digital radiographs
(x-rays), Shelby was diagnosed
with hip dysplasia and an
arthritic knee. A crucial knee
ligament was so damaged it
had to be replaced to stabilize
her knee and hip.
“Hip dysplasia is primarily
found in large, strong breeds
such as German Shepherds,
Rottweilers, Labradors and
Golden Retrievers,” explained
Dr. Travis Arndt, who
performed the surgery at the
Chesterfield Valley Center. “In
some dogs, it is an inbred trait.
In others it begins after a knee
ligament is torn when the
dog twists a hind leg.”
During the surgery,
Dr. Arndt removed the
damaged ligament and repaired
the knee by placing two strands
of heavy monofilament suture
through the tibia (the bone
between the knee and ankle)
and then around the lateral
fabella (the small bone behind
the knee). The “false ligament”
around the outside of the knee
joint restored stability and
ended her pain and limping.
www.longmeadowrescueranch.org www.hsmo.org
Much-loved
Boxer trio
Beau, Nova
and Shelby
Shelby returned 10 days after
surgery and was fully weightbearing on her repaired leg.
The Pughs expected the
highest degree of professional
care from Dr. Arndt and were
not disappointed. What they
didn’t expect was his degree of
personal interaction. “Before
the surgery, Dr. Arndt showed
us the x-rays and went over
them with us,” praised Lisa
Pugh. “Right after the surgery,
he personally phoned us and
gave us the complete run-down.
When we went back for the
stitches to be removed, he was
also there.”
The Pughs bring all three
Boxers to the Humane Society.
“Everyone from the front desk
to the vet techs is professional,”
she said. “And I can tell they all
have pets. We like knowing we
are helping other animals when
we take our dogs there.”
Open to the public, the Humane Society’s three Veterinary Medical
Centers provide expert care with state-of-the-art diagnostic and
surgical facilities. Proceeds from the clinics help homeless animals.
