Ayat-Ayat Cinta: Novel and Film
Most of people certainly have ever read Novel Ayat-ayat Cinta or watched its film. Ayat-ayat Cinta is a novel in Indonesian
language written by Indonesian novelist who was born on September 30, 1976, Habiburrahman El Shirazy. This novel was
published for the first time in 2004 by Basmala and Republika publisher. It was consisted of 418 pages and can be one of the
most popular fiction novels in Indonesia that was printed until 160 thousand exemplars only in three years. Ayat-ayat Cinta
was also a pioneer Islamic belles-lettres the time that in its heyday. At first blush, this novel likes others Islamic novel which
tried to spread religious proselytizing through a swan song, but after studied it further, this novel was union of Islamic novel,
culture, and also romantic novel that many young men like it. In other word, this novel is an appropriate medium as a
channelization media religious proselytizing to everyone that wants to know more about Islam.
Base on the success of this novel's sell, production house, MD Pictures, made its film. Indonesian play director, Hanung
Bramantyo, was selected in making the film of Ayat-ayat Cinta that was starred by Fedi Nuril as Fahri, Rianti Cartwright as
Aisha, Zaskia Adya Mecca as Noura, Carissa Putri as Maria Kirgiz, and Melanie Putria as Nurul and it was primiere in 2008.
Shooting of this film was planned in Egypt in the same manner as setting place in the novel. However, because the Egypt
government not allowed it, the shooting location was moved to India and others places in Indonesia.
The novel of Ayat-ayat Cinta has interested so much attention from its readers. However, part of the readers of this novel
disappointed because the film of that novel no better than that they imagined before. The story in the film has many changes
from the novel. There were no important scenes appeared but the important part from the story not appear from the film. For
instance, upon Maria was crashed by a car whereas that wasn't in the novel. In the novel, Maria went to hospital because she
was a lot of stress heard that Fahri had married.
If we compare between novel and film till whenever will not perfect. It is common there was many lacks because of novel and
film were different and the lovers also different. Making a film from a novel is not easy such as perfect of main character and
setting for place was so difficult, moreover Indonesia is not Hollywood or Bollywood. Habiburrahman El Shirazy who written
the novel and Hanung Bramantyo had cooperated in making this film and both of them quite satisfied to its product.
Habiburrahman El Shirazy was an expert in his field and so did Hanung Bramantyo.
The novel and the film were quite different but the important messages that want to be said by writer and play director had
been gotten by the people. They brought us to more know about Islam.
