Biology 241 - Anatomy and Physiology Course Syllabus - Winter Quarter 2015 Instructor - Larry Miller, Ph.D. E-mail – Lmiller@oc.ctc.edu Office – ST207 Office Hours : Tuesday and Thursday 3:00– 3:50 Wednesday 12:00 - 12:50 Friday 12:00 - 1:50 Phone – 475-7703 Course Description: Credits – 6; Weekly Hours – 4.5 hours lecture 3 hours lab. Prerequisites: CHEM& 121 and 131; or CHEM& 141 and 142; or concurrent enrollment. This course is an analysis of representative vertebrates for the chemical and physical processes in organ systems and their gross anatomy and histology as they pertain to the human body. Recommended for pre-professional programs. Enrollment in BIO 241 and 242 insures transferable credit. Prerequisite: CHEM 121 and 131 or CHEM 141 and 142; concurrent enrollment in either CHEM 131 or CHEM 142 is permitted but not recommended. Texts: Marieb, E. and K. Hoehn (2013). Human Anatomy & Physiology. (9th ed.): Benjamin/Cummings Science Publishing Important grading policies - I very much discourage missing a scheduled exam, and since all exams are during scheduled class hours there are very few excuses that I will accept. Any arrangements for a make-up exam must be made prior to the date of the exam. Failure to make such arrangements will result in a grade of zero for the exam. Each of the lecture exams has provisions for extra credit, up to 15% of the exam grade. In the event of a make-up exam, no extra credit questions will be included. I do not automatically give a grade of “WF” or “WP”. If you do not officially drop the class, you will receive a grade based on the total points that you have earned. It is expected that students will read the material in the text prior to attending lecture. On exams, students will be responsible for material both from lecture and the text. Material that is presented as an answer to student questions is also considered “testable material” so it is in your best interest to listen while others ask questions. Students behaving in a manner deemed disrespectful to others will be barred from attending lecture. Cell phones must be turned off during lecture. Students violating this policy risk being barred from lecture as disruptive to others. Grade Basis: Four lecture exams 100 points each Three lab exams total of 200 points Total Points Possible 400 200 600 In each chapter studied, I will choose one critical thinking question to be answered. Students answering the question correctly will earn one “extra credit” point. Answers will be due each Tuesday at the beginning of class. When computing the final grade for the course, I will replace the lowest of the first three lecture exam grades with an average of ALL lecture exam grades. The grade on the final exam will NOT be replaced. The grades on lab exams will not be averaged. 4.0 = 95% + 3.9 = 94% 3.8 = 93% 3.7 = 92% 3.6 = 91% 3.5 = 90% 3.4 = 89% 3.3 = 88% 3.2 = 87% 3.1 = 86% 3.0 = 85% 2.9 = 84% 2.8 = 83% 2.7 = 82% 2.6 = 81% 2.5 = 80% 2.4 = 79% 2.3 = 78% 2.2 = 77% 2.1 = 76% 2.0 = 75% 1.9 = 74% 1.8 = 73% 1.7 = 72% 1.6 = 71% 1.5 = 70% 1.4 = 69% 1.3 = 68% 1.2 = 67% 1.1 = 66% 1.0 = 65% 0.9 = 64% 0.8 = 63% 0.7 = 62% 0.0 = 0 – 61% If you are a student with a permanent or temporary disability and would like to request accommodations, please contact the Access Services Office located in HSS 204, or call 475-7540.
