Commitment to world peace

AWM HOBJ3881
Post WW2
Today, Australia makes its own decisions about its defence and security needs, particularly as we
strive to create and preserve the necessary conditions for shared prosperity and mutual security.
Throughout our history strong cross-Tasman links with New Zealand have been maintained, not
least in the military sense as enshrined in the ANZAC tradition. In the last forty years our bilateral
defence links with other countries in our region have also grown in importance, especially within
Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific.
These badges were produced by the ANZAC Day
Commemoration Committee of Queensland to raise funds for
veteran welfare, ANZAC educational projects, the preservation
of wartime memorabilia and the construction and refurbishment
of war memorials.
Your contribution
is gratefully
acknowledged.
The Five Power Defence Arrangements which commit Australia, New Zealand and the United
Kingdom to assist Malaysia and Singapore against external aggression, are an important
reflection of the priority we give to the security of Southeast Asia.
In more recent times we have participated in a considerable number of multinational peace
operations, some of which we have led. Many of these have been in places outside the AsiaPacific region, such as Africa and the Middle East. Most of these operations have been under the
banner of the United Nations, and reflect continuing support within Australia to contribute to the
maintenance of international collective security and action to alleviate human suffering.
In the twenty first century, as the aspirations of our national culture adapt to new developments
in international relations and the position of the Australian economy in a globalised world, it is
likely that our historical commitment to defend human rights, support democratic values and foster
respect for international law will be unchanged, as we seek to make the world a fairer place for all.

Reading food label tips
By law, food
labels in Australia
must contain
a nutrition
information
panel and an
ingredients list.
Here’s what they
should show:
y Nutrition information
panel - this shows the
amount of energy
(in kilojoules), and
nutrient content
including protein,
total fat, saturated fat,
carbohydrate and sugars,
in measurements per
serve and per 100 grams.
Food Standards Australia and New Zealand has more
information on reading food labels. Go to:http://www.
foodstandards.gov.au and follow the link under labelling.
y Ingredients list - this
lists the amount of
ingredients by weight
in descending order
(highest to lowest). So if
the first few ingredients
listed are fat or sugar
(see below for other
names for these), then
it is one of the major
ingredients in the
product and therefore
likely to be high in
energy.

War at Sea
Red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern

The Spirit of ANZAC was born in the pre-dawn darkness of Sunday
25 April 1915, when, at 4.28 am, the first ANZACs leapt ashore at
Gallipoli in Turkey. In the months that followed, their comradeship,
courage, sacrifice and loyalty to their mates were admired by
all observers.
The Dawn Service of Remembrance was first conducted in
Brisbane in 1931 and since then has been held each year beneath
the flickering flame of the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC
Square. This National Memorial was dedicated on 11 November
1930. The service is timed to begin at 4.28 am, precisely the time
of the original Gallipoli landing.
On this day, we commemorate the service and sacrifice of all
Australians who have served in overseas wars and conflicts - and
particularly those who are currently serving in the war against
global terrorism.
