Message from the Mayor Through the City’s Making Waste Matter: Integrated Waste Management Strategy, approved by Council in the fall of 2015, Kawartha Lakes is poised to become a leader in best practices and waste management. Sustainable, efficient and effective waste management protects the health of our families, communities, local economy and natural environment. Our strategy to divert 70% of our waste away from City landfills over the next 30 years, is not only realistic but more importantly, accountable and measurable. Together, with your commitment and effort, we look forward to achieving this significant goal for our municipality. Andy Letham, Mayor, City of Kawartha Lakes 1 Waste Management Services & Collection Schedule In the City of Kawartha Lakes we currently have a 2 bag per household limit for weekly garbage collection - 40 lbs/18 kgs maximum per bag (commercial limits are on page 47). Save on bag tag (page 48) and tipping fee costs (page 46) by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Landfill Site Household Hazardous Waste Depot Reuse Centre Recycling & Waste Collection Zones Find your location on the map to identify your recycling and waste collection day. There is no recycling limit for residents. Ensure items are at the curb by 7AM. Landfill Facilities Bring your recycling and waste to one of our 5 landfill facilities (page 42–43). Hazardous Household Waste Depot Hazardous Household Waste must never go in the garbage. Dispose of it safely by bringing it to one of our 2 depots (page 38). Reuse Centre Visit our Reuse Centre at the Fenelon Falls Landfill Facility. Bring objects to pass along to others or take home something new to you! (Nominal charges may apply.) 3 Winter Safety Winter collection can be challenging for our drivers, please: • Place materials in a visible spot at the end of your driveway • Keep recycling & waste off snowbanks and the street, and out of the way of snow removal equipment. Shovel out a small collection area, if necessary. • Set it out in the morning (before 7AM) to avoid overnight snow and ice accumulation. • Avoid setting white garbage bags on snowbanks. January 2016 For collection information and updates, please download our My-Waste App, follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/_kawarthalakes_) or like us on Facebook (Kawartha Lakes Waste and Recycling). Please take them to a Municipal Service Centre or local library drop-off, or the Fenelon Falls or Lindsay Ops HHW Depot for safe, proper disposal (pg 40). 5 Kawartha Lakes Waste Strategy In late 2015, City of Kawartha Lakes council adopted Making Waste Matter, a new municipal waste management strategy for our community: • It’s all yours! Through extensive public consultation you told us you wanted an affordable, innovative and accountable plan. • It will save us $$$! The proposed programs will greatly improve our waste diversion rate and extend the life of our landfills • It looks towards the future! The strategy is designed to adapt with the changing needs of residents, population growth and new technologies. February 2016 To learn more about Making Waste Matter, please visit the Waste and Recycling section of the City of Kawartha Lakes website. Composting also provides a high quality soil conditioner for plants and gardens; more nutritious than peat moss! With just a little work, planning and management, you can create a vermin-free space for organic waste in your garden. Backyard composting resources can be found online (visit “Waste & Recycling” on the City of Kawartha Lakes website), at your local library, and of course by asking your favourite gardening whiz! March 2016 Composters are available for purchase through the municipality (page 48) or at your local hardware or gardening supplies store. If it is assessed as unsafe for travel, your materials will not be collected. Follow these standards for guaranteed collection: Household Hazardous Waste (see page 38) must be taken to a depot at either the Lindsay Ops or Fenelon Landfill Facility. Batteries must not be put in the garbage. Take them to the Lindsay Ops or Fenelon Household Hazardous Waste Depot 36 (page 42–43) or a Municipal Service Centre or library drop-off (page 49). Is it contained? You are responsible for your garbage and recycling until it is collected.
