COMPUTER/IT REQUIREMENTS FOR INCOMING MBA STUDENTS (INCLUDING PKP) All incoming MBA students are required to have a laptop computer for the Ivey MBA program. Below is a summary of information from our IT support website. Ivey IT highly recommends you visit our website prior to your arrival to become familiar with the IT procedures and policies. It is your responsibility as a student to make sure you meet all requirements. The website is located here: http://support.ivey.ca LAPTOP REQUIREMENTS (HARDWARE) NEW LAPTOP: We recommend purchasing a new laptop computer. Any new laptop will be fast enough. Windows XP, Vista and 7 are supported, as well as Leopard and Snow Leopard (Mac OSX) USED LAPTOP: If you have a previously used laptop it should meet these minimum requirements: Processor: Intel Pentium / Core Duo / AMD, with Windows XP Hard Drive: 60 GB minimum ALL LAPTOPS: 1 GB RAM minimum, 2-‐4 GB RAM preferred DVD/CD ROM USB ports Integrated Wireless Card (802.11b/g) WEIGHT OF LAPTOP -‐ Ask how heavy the laptop is before you buy. Current students have complained that their 6-‐8 lb. laptops are too heavy for carrying on a daily basis. You might want to consider a 3-‐5 lb. laptop. FOR STUDENTS USING A MAC LAPTOP (LEOPARD/SNOW LEOPARD OSX) Macintosh Laptops are fully supported, but PLEASE BE AWARE, that some courses (e.g.: PKP) will require you to run Microsoft Office (English Windows Version), as some plug-‐ins and software only work with Windows. As part of our MSDNAA Agreement (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance), we are able to provide you with a Microsoft Windows License to use. As such, we have prepared a Windows Machine/Image for you to use, using a virtualization program called Virtual Box, which is on par with Parallels or VMWare. Please drop by the IT Centre at Main Campus or at the Spencer Leadership Centre to have this setup. If you are running Windows via Bootcamp, then you can boot into Windows and run any required software from there. 1 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MBA PROGRAM 1) Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2010 in English Since you are a student, you will qualify for academic pricing on software, including Microsoft Office 2010. You can check the UWO Campus Computer Store, or alternatively, buy it directly from Microsoft at a heavily discounted rate. Please see http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-‐ca/default.aspx for more details. 2) Antivirus Software You must supply all of the software required for your program here at Ivey The Ivey IT Centre does not stock, sell, nor supply student software. ****** IMPORTANT INFO ****** The software CD(s) you used for installation will often be required to fix problems, and include Add-‐
ins to programs that you will need, therefore you must have the CD you used with the exact same version of the software. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK ALL IMPORTANT SOFTWARE SO YOU HAVE IT WITH YOU IN LONDON ʹ This includes Operating System CDS, Recovery CDs, Antivirus Software CDs, and Microsoft Office CDs. MICROSOFT WINDOWS & OFFICE Operating Systems in other languages are NOT SUPPORTED. You must have an English version of Windows to write exams, install printers and any other software that may be provided to you. We cannot guarantee that the software will work with non-‐English versions of Windows, such as Chinese, Korean, or German Windows. If you are using Windows XP you must have Service Pack 3 and all Critical Updates installed, available on Microsoft's Windows Update website ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE: You are required as a student to have antivirus software installed on your computer͕ĂƐŝƚ͛ƐŽŶĞ
of our network policies. We recommend Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security. Important: In the interest of protecting other users, anyone without current and up to date Anti-‐Virus software will be asked to install some when requesting assistance in the IT Centre. There are free antivirus programs available online, which include Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) and AVG Free (http://free.avg.com/ca-‐en/homepage). Macintosh Computers have some anti-‐virus solutions available including Trend Micro Security available at the Campus Computer Store, as well as Sophos Anti-‐virus and is available free at: http://www.sophos.com/products/free-‐tools/free-‐mac-‐anti-‐virus/ 2 GETTING STARTED͙,OW TO PREP YOUR LAPTOP FOR IVEY AND WHAT TO KNOW 1) How do I get on the network/Internet when I arrive on campus? So if your name is John Smith, then your Ivey Email Address should be: JSmith.MBA2012@ivey.ca . Since there is the potential for users to have the same name and email address, to double check what your email forwarding address is, please log into EZone, ĐůŝĐŬŽŶ͞ŝƌĞĐƚŽƌLJ͕͟ƚLJƉĞŝŶLJŽƵƌůĂƐƚŶĂŵĞŝŶƚŚĞ͞>ĂƐƚEĂŵĞ͟&ŝĞůĚ and click on Search. This will enable you to check out what your email address is, as well as look at your Ivey Bio. Ivey uses a LEAF (Lifelong Email Address Forwarding) system/service for students, so any email sent to your Ivey email address is forwarded directly onto a personal account of your choice. To check and/or change where your Ivey Email is being forwarded to, you can do so by logging into ŽŶĞ͕ĐůŝĐŬŝŶŐŽŶƚŚĞ͞WĞƌƐŽŶĂůKƉƚŝŽŶƐ͟ůŝŶŬŽŶƚŚĞůĞĨƚ-‐ŚĂŶĚƐŝĚĞ͕ĂŶĚƐĞůĞĐƚŝŶŐ͞ŚĂŶŐĞDLJ

Use an external hard drive, burn your files on a DVD/CD, or use a USB memory key. Whatever you do, get into a backup routine right away. If your computer is lost or stolen or your hard drive dies, you will still have your files. Ivey IT cannot STRESS this enough, as we have encountered situations with students, where they have ůŽƐƚĂŶĞŶƚŝƌĞLJĞĂƌ͛ƐƐĐŚŽŽůǁŽƌŬĚƵĞƚŽĂŚĂƌĚdrive failing and the student has not done any backups.
