Foundation’s Golf Tournament
Partnership Raises $1.5 Million
to Fight Heart Disease
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS NEERKEN
On April 27, 2010, The Heart Foundation and Galpin Motors held a special VIP reception to celebrate that
the Galpin Motors Golf Classic Tournaments have netted $1.5 million to support the work of The Heart
Foundation. The exclusive soiree took place at The Collection at Galpin Motors, a museum containing the
exquisite and unique personal car collection of Galpin owners Bert & Jane Boeckmann, including several
of the vehicles from Pimp My Ride which was filmed at the location. The Boeckmanns, Dr. P.K. Shah, The
Heart Foundation Chairman Mark Litman, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Sr. Vice President of Community
Relations Arthur Ochoa and many key supporters attended the event. Guests enjoyed cocktails and a wide
array of delectable hors d’oeuvres while mingling among the rare vehicles.

“As golf tournaments do not normally net a great deal of funds, raising this amount of money through golf is
truly an accomplishment,” said Chairman Mark Litman. “We are eternally grateful to our sponsors, players
and donors who have helped us reach this significant milestone and whose dedication is making a real difference in our fight to eradicate heart disease for future generations.” Dr. Shah announced at the reception that
he and his colleagues had started the process of obtaining permission from the FDA to begin Phase I human
trials of the heart disease vaccine they have developed.

eart disease takes more lives than AIDS and all cancers combined and is responsible for
most heart attacks, strokes and sudden deaths. With your support we continue to unravel
the mechanisms leading to plaque build-up and develop new treatments for this lethal
disease. Following is an update on some of our key projects. You will also find a review of the common heart disease risk factors. Protect yourself by learning and reviewing them with a trusted physician. You are your first and best line of defense from this silent killer.
Update on Key Projects Supported by
The Heart Foundation
•A vaccine against cholesterol to prevent arterial
plaque formation has been developed in collaboration with Swedish doctors and tested in animals.
We continue to await approval from the FDA to
begin phase I human trials.
•A designer antibody against a specific part of
the oxidized cholesterol molecule was developed
in collaboration with Swedish colleagues and has
completed a phase 1 human trial. The FDA has
given the go-ahead for a phase 2 human trial in
the United States. This antibody was able to shrink
plaque in mice within 3 weeks of weekly injections.
•Gene-based therapy to prevent and reverse arterial plaque based on a mutant gene from Northern
Italy (Apo A-I Milano) has been developed and is
currently being tested in animals with plans for
human trials in the very near future.
Update on Other Projects Being Conducted at the
Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute & Cardiology Division
•Non-surgical method to repair a severely leaky
Mitral Valve and non-surgical way to insert a new
valve to correct a critically narrowed aortic valve;
currently Cedars-Sinai is one of the leading centers
testing these new technologies in humans.
•An umbrella-like device that is non-surgically
4
T H E R H Y T H M A P RIL 2011 www.theheartfoundation.org
implanted in the heart to prevent blood clot formation in patients with atrial fibrillation, eliminating the need for the blood thinner Coumadin
•Non-surgical closure of holes in the heart using
special catheters and devices
•Clinical trial of bone marrow and heart biopsy
derived cells to determine whether such cell
therapy can regenerate heart tissue, repairing
damaged heart muscle
•Robotic assisted and less invasive open heart
surgery using small incisions for bypass or valve
repair/replacement
Common Risk Factors for Heart Disease
Age: Heart disease can occur at any age; however, 4
out of 5 who die from heart disease are 65 or older.
Gender: Death rates from heart disease for
women are twice as high as those for all forms
of cancer, and since 1984 the number of women
who die from cardiovascular disease has exceeded
that of men, yet many women continue to think
of heart disease as a man’s disease. In fact, men
and women are EQUALLY at risk for heart disease,
but women tend to develop the disease an average
of 10 years later than men. The risk for women
increases as they approach menopause and continues to rise as they age. It is recommended
that women avoid hormone replacement therapy
unless menopausal symptoms are severe.
Family History (Heredity): The presence of heart
disease in a parent or sibling, especially at a young
age, increases your risk of developing the disease.
Smoking: 46 million Americans (25 million men
and 21 million women) smoke. The nicotine and
carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke damages the
cardiovascular system, making smokers twice as
likely to suffer heart attacks and die as non-smokers. Second-hand smoke may also present a danger.
Women who smoke and take the oral contraceptive
pill are at particularly high risk of heart disease.
Alcohol: A small amount of regular alcohol consumption (1/2 to 1 drink per day for women and 1-2 drinks
per day for men) can reduce one’s risk of heart disease. However, drinking an average of more than one
drink a day for women or more than two drinks a day
for men increases the risk of heart disease as a result
of the effect of the alcohol on blood pressure, weight
and triglyceride (a type of fat carried in the blood)
levels. A drink is one 12 oz. beer, 4 oz. of wine, 1.5 oz.
of 80-proof spirits, or 1 oz. of 100-proof spirits. Binge
drinking is particularly dangerous.
Drug Abuse: The use of certain drugs, particularly
cocaine and amphetamines, has been linked to
heart disease. Cocaine can cause abnormal heartbeat which can be fatal while heroin and opiates
can cause lung failure. Injecting drugs can cause an
infection of the heart or blood vessels.
Cholesterol: The higher the blood cholesterol level,
the higher the risk of coronary heart disease, particularly if it is combined with any of the other risk
factors. Diet is one cause of high cholesterol; others
are age, sex and family history. High levels (over 100
mg/dl) of LDL (low-density lipoprotein), or “bad cholesterol”, and low levels (under 40 mg/dl in men and
under 55 mg/dl in women) of HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or “good cholesterol”, increase the risk of
heart disease. High levels (over 150 mg/dl) of triglycerides (another type of fat) may also increase the risk
of heart attack in some. Nearly 40 million Americans
have high cholesterol levels. Following a diet low in
salt, saturated and transfats and high in unsaturated
fats (fish, avocado, etc.) like the Mediterranean Diet
can help control cholesterol levels.
High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure (over
140/90 mmHg and over 130/80 mmHg in diabetics)
increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, aneurysm,
and kidney damage. When combined with obesity,
smoking, high cholesterol or diabetes, the risk
increases several times. High blood pressure can be
a problem in women who are pregnant or are taking
high-dose types of oral contraceptive pill. 72 million
Americans over age 20 have high blood pressure.
Physical Inactivity: Failure to exercise can contribute to an increased risk of coronary heart disease as
physical activity helps control weight, cholesterol levels, diabetes and, in some cases, can help lower blood
pressure. Engage in moderate aerobic exercise for at
least 30 minutes five days a week or more vigorous
workouts for at least 20 minutes three times a week.
Obesity: People who are overweight are more likely to develop heart disease even if they have none
of the other risk factors. Excess weight causes extra
strain on the heart; influences blood pressure, cholesterol and levels of other blood fats - including
triglycerides; and increases the risk of developing
diabetes. 66% of Americans over age 20 are obese.
Diabetes: Diabetes seriously increases the risk of
developing cardiovascular disease, even if glucose
levels are under control. More than 80% of diabetes sufferers die of some form of heart or blood
vessel disease.
Previous Medical History: People who have had
a previous heart attack or stroke are more likely
than others to suffer further events.
Stress, Depression, Anger/Hostility: Stress,
depression, and negative emotions have also
been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
Remember: Visit your physician for regular
check-ups. He or she may recommend taking a
daily aspirin or other medications to control cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes.

A Sold Out Day
of Golf for the Heart
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CURTIS DAHL & THOMAS NEERKEN
Although rain fell throughout the night, the sun broke through the clouds the morning of October 25,
2010, for the start of the Galpin Motors Golf Classic at Sherwood Country Club. The tournament, sold-out
again this year, proved to be a gorgeous day of camaraderie on one of the best golf courses in the country. As the sun set, golfers and guests moved into the clubhouse for the awards dinner festivities which
began with cocktails and an expansive silent auction. The evening closed with the Grand Prize Contest
where participants vied to win one of eleven incredible prizes including a 2011 Jaguar XJL, a 2011 Lincoln
Navigator and a trip to London. The Heart Foundation extends our deepest gratitude to Bert and Jane
Boeckmann of Galpin Motors for their unwavering support and for providing the prize vehicles for the
tournament. We also wish to acknowledge Patron, American Airlines, Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, P♥M
Wonderful, Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village and all of our sponsors, golfers, dinner guests and volunteers for so generously supporting our efforts and making this year another stupendous success.

The Heart Foundation’s Inaugural
Day of Health & Wellbeing
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS NEERKEN
On Sunday, May 16, 2010, The
Heart Foundation held its first
Day of Health & Wellbeing,
sponsored by Cardiovax, at the
California Health and Longevity
Institute at Four Seasons Hotel
Westlake Village. The day
included workshops on topics
such as stress and the power
of sleep, a healthy cooking
demonstration and tasting,
and yoga and stretching classes
all led by expert presenters.
Participants began the morning
with an energy walk led by Dr.
P.K. Shah around the exquisite
and relaxing Four Seasons
campus followed by a visit to
the organic greenhouse and
stretching under the pagoda.
As guests dined on a hearthealthy lunch, Dr. Shah provided an update on his research,
shared vital tools to improve
heart health, and answered
questions. A portion of all
spa treatments booked that
day and the following month
was donated to The Heart
Foundation. We hope you will
make plans to join us for this
year’s event (date and location
to be announced soon) and
give yourself the gift of health
and wellbeing in 2011.
