SPRING 2014 Alumni UPDATE T H E O H I O S TAT E U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E [FIRST] PERSON Take a journey with Stewart Smith, first-year medical student, as he shares his perspective on the next four years of medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The LSI Advantage In some medical curricula, the first two years as a student can be an arduous task. We are selected to attend medical school in large part for our compassion, commitment to service and interpersonal skills. Unfortunately, in some medical school curricula, students are forced to put those passions on the backburner until their third year. However, in the “Lead.Serve.Inspire.” curriculum here at the OSU College of Medicine, we have the honor and privilege to begin sharpening these skills from the beginning of our first years. My favorite part of the LSI curriculum is my longitudinal practice preceptorship. I am able to spend one day every other week in clinic with Dr. Quinn Capers, an interventional cardiologist here at the Medical Center. I have the opportunity to conduct patient interviews, give vaccines and injections, take EKGs, and participate in most other aspects of the care of his patients. Dr. Capers’ skills as a teacher and physician further my medical education more on those days than I could hope to gain in multiple days with my head in the books. He teaches me to think critically about a patient’s care, and holds me to the standards of a young physician. He pushes me to apply my budding medical knowledge in the real world, for the end that every healthcare provider desires – improving the lives of others. HAPPY 100! College of Medicine Celebrates Centennial One hundred years ago, a group of forward-thinking central Ohioans recognized the value of integrating medical education with innovative research and science-based care. In 1914, Ohio State opened the College of Medicine – humble beginnings that laid the foundation for building our rich legacy of medical leadership and excellence. This year, we look back with pride on a century of excellence and achievement, and look forward united in our singular purpose to improve people’s lives through advancements in medical education, research and patient care. That’s right. When you open the pages of your alumni magazine this spring, you will be in the midst of a celebration – 2014 will celebrate the 100th birthday of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. The names may have changed, but the purpose has remained constant – turn out the best of the best! Oh, how medicine has changed during these 100 years. Think about the pioneers who preceded you and what you have done to carry their cause into the future. You are part of a legacy that only a select few can appreciate. Our short time in medical school gave us the knowledge that carried us into a career and a life of which we can all be proud. Michael G. Leadbetter, MD ’74, FACS Medical Alumni Society President Do you believe in ghosts? I think I do. Every time I walk through the medical complex at Ohio State, I hear their voices. All those professors who taught me what I know today. In some shape or form, they still roam the halls of this great institution and guide the present faculty in their quests to produce the best of the best. This could not have been possible without us – 13,000 alumni who have carried this message for decades. We can reflect on the comment, “But for Ohio State, where would I be?” The students of today dwell on the comment, “But for our alumni, where would I be?” In order to continue educating the best of the best, please join me to “Dot the ‘i’ in Scholarship” in honor of the 100th birthday of the institution that gave you your career. We can help. Call us at 614-366-1642 or email medalum@osumc.edu. Message from the Dean... Dear Alumni, You may have already received an email from me notifying you that I recently accepted a position at the University of South Florida as senior vice president for USF Health and dean of the Morsani College of Medicine, beginning after Charles Lockwood, MD our graduation ceremony in Dean, May. It was serendipitous that The Ohio State University College of Medicine this opportunity came about, which also was a good fit for my family. During my time here at Ohio State, I have been grateful to be a part of a team that launched a new medical school curriculum, increased the quality, quantity and diversity of medical school applicants, increased research grant funding, defined new pathways for promotion and tenure, promoted faculty development and launched our biggest student aid initiative, “Dot the ‘i’ in Scholarships.” Stay connected: Visit http://medicine.osu.edu/alumni I am a proud Buckeye and I will always think fondly of my Ohio State experience. A lot has happened in our 100-year history, making Ohio State’s College of Medicine what it is today. Below are a few noteworthy moments in our history that have helped define who we are as one of the nation’s top medical schools. 1914 – Ohio State’s College of Medicine is established, led by Dr. William Means as the College of Medicine’s first dean. 1914 – Ohio State’s first hospital has 21 beds and 14 nurses on staff. Within 100 years, Ohio State opens leading facilities in cancer research, critical care, emergency and trauma care. 1944 – Ohio State becomes the first medical facility in central Ohio to administer penicillin, enabling OSU to bring life-saving and innovative treatments to its patients. 1947 – As the first black woman to earn a medical degree from Ohio State, Dr. Clotilde Bowen conquers other barriers for women and blacks through her career in the U.S. Army. 1969 – Dr. James Warren and a team of Ohio State cardiologists create the nation’s first mobile coronary care unit, the Heartmobile, allowing lifesaving care to be administered to patients en route to Ohio State’s Emergency Department. 1999 – Ohio State surgeons are the first in North America to perform a “da Vinci” robotic surgery. The da Vinci system uses precise movements and pushes the boundaries of surgery beyond human capabilities. 2010 – The largest expansion in Ohio State’s history begins with the expansion of the Wexner Medical Center. An estimated 21 percent increase in patient admission capacity will occur within the next 10 years. 2012 – OSU College of Medicine launches its innovative “Lead.Serve. Inspire” Curriculum, moving medical students from the classroom to patient-care areas faster than traditional models. Ohio State College of Medicine has made incredible advances throughout its 100-year existence, and is looking forward to the next 100 years and the endless possibilities of the road ahead. The challenge, which originated at Ohio State in 2010, consisted of six types of ultrasound exams including a fast exam of a trauma patient, nerve exam, pelvic exam of a first-semester pregnancy, abdominal aorta scan, cardiac ultrasound exam and a vascular exam to guide placement of a catheter. “It’s a low-pressure environment where students can highlight their ultrasound skills in a friendly competition with other medical students,” says Dave Bahner, MD, clinical professor of Emergency Medicine and founder of the program. “It’s also a novel way for students to learn and master the skill of acquiring quality ultrasound images that can help them in their future medical career.” Barbie Reichert, a fourth-year medical student at Ohio State, was among the dozens of students who participated in the high-energy competition. “It helps us get ready to perform when we’re presented with that opportunity in true patient care,” Reichert says. “We’ve gotten to build relationships and share ideas about the ultrasound experience at different institutions.” This year’s daylong competition also included a presentation by Matt Dawson, MD, a renowned emergency physician and co-host of UltrasoundPodcast.com, who educated the students on using technology and social media to improve their education and patient care. The intensive three-week summer camp is open to high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates who’ve come from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. Ultimately, the camp aims to inspire students to pursue a career in medicine by providing them a wellrounded introduction to the field. Nearly 200 high school students have participated in the program since it was initiated in 2004. MD Camp is operated by our medical students and overseen by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. hospitals and clinics. In addition to the medical curriculum, participants work on a community service project. MD Camp aims to foster a sense of community involvement and social responsibility among participants, hoping they will eventually pursue medical careers in underserved areas. “MD Camp gives students early exposure to the art and science of medicine,” says Anne Owens, College of Medicine student and 2014 MD Camp director. “Students are introduced to knowledge, skills and values of the field, and have unique opportunities to develop their interests and passions.” MD Camp commences June 16-July 3 at the Ohio State’s College of Medicine. For the first time, MD Camp will be a residential camp with limited housing for participants from outside of the central Ohio area. Cost is $750 and scholarships are available. At MD Camp, participants engage in lectures, discussions, research and hands-on workshops. Participants also have the opportunity to shadow medical personnel at local Alumni interested in supporting MD Camp by contributing to student MD Camp scholarships should contact Anne Owens at anne.owens@osumc.edu or mdcamposu2014gmail.com. MD Camp inspires high school students to pursue a career in medicine Student Spotlight > Diana Wieser As a second-year medical student at Ohio State, Diana Wieser spends a lot of time independently studying and serving the needs of patients. experience, but they were looking for enthusiastic members with a new perspective, and they saw that combination in my application. In her added role as student advocate for the American Medical Association Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS), she influences policy decisions for medical students and patients on a much broader scale. Describe some of the ways you’re impacting policy. “Clinical work allows me to have an impact on my patients, while policy work allows me to have an impact on patients across the country,” says Wieser, originally from Lima, Ohio. Wieser, who plans to specialize in Oncology or Cardiology, became a member of AMA’s Medical Student committee on Legislation and Advocacy in August. She is one of just 14 students on the Committee, advocating for the needs of medical students and providing guidance on the organization’s policy. At the beginning of the year, we ran a grassroots campaign to preserve graduate medical education funding. The White House was proposing large cuts, which would be detrimental to medical students trying to match into residency positions. In a matter of weeks, we coordinated students to send thousands of letters to Congress and organized 50 visits with legislators. At Ohio State, 12 students met with the staff of U.S. representatives Pat Tiberi and Joyce Beatty. Through this experience, I learned how to frame important policy issues. It was amazing to see other students’ passion and the farreaching impact of our grassroots effort. How did you become a member of this elite group? How has your involvement enhanced your education at Ohio State? Working your way up in the AMA-MSS requires a lot of enthusiasm, dedication to the organization and networking with current leaders. The Committee on Legislation and Advocacy is one of the most competitive committees – only 14 available slots for 60 applicants. The committee who selected me said that my enthusiasm “popped” in my application. At the time I had very little advocacy I’ve learned so much about healthcare policy and how I can have an impact on policy, even as a medical student. I’ve effectively advocated for issues I care about. I wanted to learn more about healthcare policy because it will affect my future patients and myself. The AMA has educational tools that teach me about these important issues and allow me to develop the skills I need to successfully have an impact. This year, Dr. Parker was able to reciprocate this volunteerism by opening his home in Utah to Ohio State medical students as they engaged in the residency program interview process. Dr. Parker is one of many Ohio State alumni who have participated in the Help Our Students Travel (HOST) Program. The HOST Program is beneficial to both students and alumni, as it saves students money and helps alumni stay connected with Ohio State and learn from the next generation of physicians. Beth Gottesman, a fourth-year medical student, says she greatly benefitted from the program. Out of her 11 interviews in Baltimore, Salt Lake City and Cleveland, she had to pay for just one hotel room. “It was great to stay with people who knew exactly what I was going through and who were happy to help me on my journey,” Gottesman says. “They understood that I was tired and travel-weary, and needed a place to recharge so I could put on my best face for the interview.” Dr. Parker housed Gottesman during her interview in Utah. He says he appreciated the opportunity to talk to her, as well as the other student he hosted, about their interview experiences. As a student, he found the program extremely beneficial and was eager to give back after his graduation. “The HOST Program connects alumni with students and gives us opportunities to think beyond ourselves and help others through the grueling interview season,” Dr. Parker says. Alumni interested in being a host should complete and submit the online alumni registration form at go.osu.edu/HOST. Female Students, Physicians Bond through Similar Interests The “Women in White Coats” program celebrated its 12th year and the College’s 100th anniversary at its meeting in January. Alumnae physicians and female medical students paid homage to the women who made advancements in medicine during the College’s rich history. Dean Charles Lockwood honored four of Ohio State’s “Local Legends”: Linda Stone, MD ’79; Rebecca Jackson, MD ’78; Mary Beth Fontana, MD ’66; and Carole Miller, MD ’66. Local Legends is a national program that highlights the contributions of women physicians in rural and urban towns throughout America. Nominated by a congressional representative, each honoree has made a positive and enduring contribution to the health care of her community. Attendees received advice from honorees prior to roundtable discussions with guests. One alumna said, “I enjoyed the event and the time with women in medicine. It is important that we support women coming into medicine today.” The event proved impactful for both students and alumni. As we look back with pride during this year of centennial celebration, we recognize the critical role of the College’s donors. Below, a dedicated supporter tells why paying forward means giving back: n Dr. Marvin Shie, MD ’72, was in private practice for 36 years as a general surgeon until he retired in July 2013. He began working part-time in September 2013 for the Cleveland Clinic, where he sees office patients, assists in surgery and mentors and advises a younger surgeon. His hobbies include golfing when it’s warm, reading and traveling. Marvin Shie, MD Why do you give? “I got a very good medical education and I was well prepared for my residency and subsequent medical practice, which is why I chose OSU for medical school. I wanted to be prepared to actually practice community medicine and not just be in the ivory tower environment. Ohio State gave me that preparation.” “When I go back from time to time for visits and when I read the alumni bulletin, it’s obvious that the College is progressing, improving and expanding all the time. It just makes you proud to be an alumnus of a school like that and I want to support it.” Student Appreciation “ The scholarship significantly lessened the burden of residency interview season expenses for me. Being able to attend the interviews I wanted allowed me the chance to earn the best internal medicine residency program possible.” CHRISTINA BOUTICARIS, Class of 2014 “ I’m so grateful for the generosity of the scholarship donors in making my medical education a reality.” SABRINA SMITH, Class of 2015 Stay connected: Visit http://medicine.osu.edu/alumni “ I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude to you for helping me achieve my dream of becoming a physician, and for allowing me to join you as a member of the OSUCOM family.” ANONYMOUS STUDENT, Class of 2016 9 Residency News Yu Named Honorary Fellow Joseph S. Scarlet-and-Gray Alumni Preserve Fabric of Ohio State Dr. Michael Minch, MD ’73, has lived in Nashville for more than 40 years since departing Columbus, but his connection to and appreciation for OSU remains strong. Dr. Minch supports current OSU medical students with an annual scholarship. “About 15 years ago, it dawned on me that people come in and out of your life, but the one thing that has been a consistently positive presence in my life is Ohio State,” Minch says. “Ohio State was the only medical school I applied to and, if they hadn’t accepted me, my life would have turned out quite different. Some of the best times of my life took place on the OSU campus; I wanted to honor that by giving back to the College.” Dr. Minch notes that it is really the scarlet-and-gray alumni who preserve the fabric of this institution. In fact, he was appointed by Dr. Steven Gabbe to serve on the University Alumni Council as the Health Sciences representative from 2007-2013. Dr. Minch says he finds immense pride in being part of an OSU network that extends far beyond the campus boundaries or even Ohio’s border, and his annual donation validates that pride. He describes the worldwide connectivity of OSU grads as an “aura,” an undercurrent of pride that drives alumni to maintain their ties to OSU, in whatever way they can manage. Dr. Minch’s generosity does more than maintain his tie to the College – it affords past and current students the opportunity to study medicine at a world-renowned institution.
