Each graduate was given a complimentary one-year membership to the Alumni Association to encourage future participation Geology Alumni Society. August 3: Summer Geology Commencement Reception Six graduate, four Ph.D. and two MS students, graduated in the summer semester and were honored at the summer reception. Each graduate was given a complimentary one-year membership to the Alumni Association to encourage future participation in the Geology Alumni Society. September 28: 14th Fall Rock Breaker Social Geology students, faculty, and alumni attended a happy hour social at the New World Brewery in Ybor City. This event welcomed returning students and encouraged the interaction between students and alums to help spur employment and mentoring program opportunities to benefit both students and employers. One of the event’s success stories includes a master’s student who met with a representative of a local environmental consulting firm and subsequently landed an employment opportunity. October 26: GAS Wins Four USF Alumni Association Awards! Board members Bruce Nocita, Jon Hull, and Eileen Rodriguez and Geology Department Chair Jeff Ryan attended the USF AA’s Award Ceremony at Traditions Hall. USF GAS won awards for excellence in Programs, Student Support, Membership, & Group Organization! Yale 2013 Withlacoochee Rockhounds Scholarship Recipient SAMANTHA KINMAN TAVAREZ Being born and raised in Deming, a small town in southwestern New Mexico known as the “Home of Good Water and Fast Ducks,” Samantha Tavarez grew up spending nearly every waking moment outdoors. She built forts in the desert, played in the dirt, rode bikes, fished, camped and hiked in the mountains. Her background transformed her into a rock-loving, outdoors nut. From a very young age, she had a fascination with volcanoes and swore that she’d one day be a NatGeo photographer and scientist. It was a pipe dream, but she was determined. Subsequent to Samantha’s four years studying art and photography, and more than 12 years working in the graphic design and photography industries, she is graduating with a B.S. in geology. The fall of 2013 will mark her first semester of graduate school in pursuit of her PhD. She plans to focus on physical volcanology (hazard assessment) and geophysics. However, she also plans to implement coursework in computer science learn probabilistic modeling, artificial intelligence and pattern recognition in geodynamic systems. “I’m incredibly grateful to have been selected for this scholarship, and will absolutely put it to the best use possible this semester. I’m excited for things to come and I look forward to the adventures to come.” Samantha Tavarez. NEW2013_GAS_Banquet.indd 5 2/7/2013 12:06:45 AM Fellowship Recipients Ph.D. candidate Mel Rodgers ($3,000) RICHARD A. DAVIS, JR., ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP AWARDEES 2013 The proceeds from our banquets grow the Richard A. Davis Endowed Fellowship fund of the USF Foundation. Interest from the endowment supports annual awards to outstanding graduate students. The Department’s Graduate Committee selects the awardees from nominations submitted by the faculty. The policy of the committee established in 2004 is that students can’t win the award in successive years. Mel Rodgers studied at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom and graduated in 2004 with an MSci in Geophysical Sciences. She spent four months in Mexico at the University of Colima working with Dr. Nick Varley during the 2004 eruption of Colima Volcano. In 2005 Mel joined ARKeX Limited, a geophysical survey company specialising in oil and gas exploration. She worked as crew chief on airborne field operations in North America, Africa and the Middle East. From flying low-level surveys in the Canadian Arctic to managing the logistics of moving aircraft and ground equipment across international boundaries in the Middle East, she spent four years living out of a suitcase and travelling the world. Eventually the draw of volcanoes lured her back to academia and in 2009 she accepted a Ph.D. position in volcano seismology working with Dr. Diana Roman at the University of South Florida. Her research focuses on the seismicity of Telica Volcano in Nicaragua and in 2010, along with researchers from Pennsylvania State University, she was involved in the installation of a seismic and GPS network on Telica Volcano. Her project has a large field component and every six months she makes maintenance visits to the network to download data and carry out any necessary repairs. A large part of her work has been to organise, catalogue and process vast amounts of seismic data - not a trivial task with over 350,000 detected earthquakes since March 2010. Telica erupted in 2011 and Mel is currently identifying the seismic precursors to this eruption. Her first paper on seismic precursors to the 1999 eruption of Telica is in preparation and due to be submitted to the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research in the next few weeks. In addition to essential volcano-seismology processing tasks, such as event-detection, spectral analysis and earthquake-location, Mel is interested in the identification of repeating earthquakes and in solving the computational challenge associated with performing this type of analysis on extremely large data sets. She has been collaborating with a software engineer to develop open source code that, once finalised, will be available to the seismology community for analysis of these large data sets. When not working, Mel competes in triathlons and she recently completed her first half-ironman. Aside from swim/bike/run training she can often be found sailing, kayaking or playing music, and was recently introduced to the fantastic world of caving. NEW2013_GAS_Banquet.indd 6 2/7/2013 12:06:48 AM Fellowship Recipients M.S. candidate Denise Davis ($1,500) Denise Davis was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. She went to Tampa Bay Technical High School focusing on architectural drafting and design and culinary arts. Cheesecake was her specialty. In the fall of 2010, she received her Bachelors of Science in Geology from USF. During that time she was a research assistant for Dr. Len Vacher working on geoscience education research. She was also vice-president for the Geology Club her last semester of her Bachelors degree. After receiving her B. S. in Geology she worked for SWFWMD for about nine months (until the funding ended) in the Regional Observation and Monitor-well Program group. There she got to explore the Geohydrologic world and work with some great people. In the spring of 2011, she began working on her Masters of Science in Geology at USF under the direction of Dr. Ping Wang. She is currently part of the Coastal Research Lab with an interest in sediment transport. Geoscience education is still a great interest of hers as well. At the Geological Society of America 2012 Annual Meeting, she helped lead a workshop titled “Quantitative Literacy and Geology in the National Parks” alongside Dr. Vacher, Dr. Mark Rains, and Mark Horwitz. She is currently working on an NSF grant with Dr. Ping Wang to create a virtual fieldtrip for the senior level class. For this virtual fieldtrip, students will get to explore subenvironments of the high energy siliciclastic barrier island environment, modern carbonate environment, and low energy siliciclastic barrier island environment from the comfort of their desk. The students will also get to learn about the field methods used to explore the subenvironments. She intends on completing her Masters in the summer of 2013 and then hopes to start on a Doctorate degree in the fall. She would like to thank the Geology Alumni Society for supporting the Dr. Richard A. Davis, Jr. Endowed Fellowship in Geology. It is a great honor to receive this award and a great help financially. She would also like to give a special thanks to Dr. Len Vacher and Dr. Ping Wang for all of their support and inspiration.
