WWI. Efforts to keep up with reparation payments caused inflation to the point where the German currency became worthless.

Anger grew towards other European countries (especially France) for placing the blame for the War on Germany.
•
People wanted to see Germany restored to its previous strength. Nationalism grew.

The democratic government of Germany was week and unable to solve its many problems.

Some Germans felt that they were virtually enslaved because of the loss of land and reparation payments. The looked for a strong leader to take action.

Under these desperate circumstances
Hitler and the Nazi party were able to gain control.

(a single party dictatorship where government controls all aspects of life)

Arrested and murdered his political opponents.

Established a secret police force called the
Gestapo to hunt down and arrest anyone suspected of opposing Nazi rule.

Passed laws that put the state ahead of individual rights.

David so they could be easily identified.

All of these were the first steps taken by
Hitler that would lead towards his eventual attempt at genocide.

Economic Recovery: Launched vast building programs, including housing, highways, and sports arenas. He began also to rearm
Germany.

Controlled wages and prices

Banned strikes and outlawed unions.

These steps were all successful.
