Sample Question:
What type of conflict(s) does the main character experience in “The Sniper”?
Sample Answers:
In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the main character faces an external conflict as he is
pitted against another sniper in a face off to the death. Raising his head over the edge of the
building to get a look at his adversary, “there was a flash and a bullet whizzed over his head”
(Flaherty 11). Bullets whizzing over your head is a life and death situation, and the sniper must
kill the other man to survive.
In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the main character faces an internal conflict after he
kills his enemy. He begins to lose “the lust of battle” and becomes “bitten with remorse”
(Flaherty 13). The guilt the sniper feels begins to make him question his involvement in the war
and he curses himself.
