In “The Sniper,” the author develops the protagonist’s
character as animalistic through the sniper’s actions.
“The Republican sniper smiled and lifted his revolver above
the edge of the parapet.”
The sniper is carrying out his plan and spots the enemy.
While the sniper is carrying out his plan, he “smile[s] and
lift[s] the revolver above the edge of the parapet”
(O’Flaherty). The fact that the sniper experiences excitement
while attempting to kill another of his kind portrays an
animalistic nature.
“He peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy had
been hit.”
