Course Description: An introduction of sociological concepts, theories, and methods. The
influence of the social environment on the individual in such areas as role, status, personality,
mobility, and social control is studied.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course:
 Students will be able to explain how the scientific method is used by sociology to
conduct their examination of society.
 Students will be able to discuss how the social structure of society influences their
personal actions, behaviors and opportunities.
 Students will be able to describe how different values, attitudes and history shape the
social structures that distinguish societies.
 Students will be able to describe many of the complexities of society and the relationship
of the individual with the larger social institutions.
 Students will be able to describe the different economic, political and social forces
shaping our global society

Grading Policy Any class assignment which is received late will have 10% deducted from the
grade for each day it is late. If there are severe circumstances in which a student cannot make
the stated due date, the student must contact the instructor before the assignment is due or the
above penalty will be imposed.

Grading Scale:
A = 90 to 100 B = 80 to 89 C = 70 to 79 D = 60 to 69 F = 50 and Below
Students are expected to do a minimum of two hours of work (weekly)
for every 1 credit hour for this class. Therefore, a
minimum of six hours a week should be devoted to this
class. Some assignments may require more time.
