PRNewswire — Carol Herrick may have recently joined Operation Homefront
Oklahoma as its chapter president, but she’s wasting no time in digging in and setting up shop. Long involved in helping area military families, one of the first things Herrick did in her new job was to announce the kickoff of the chapter’s holiday programs, which serve junior enlisted troops, their families and wounded warriors who have returned home.
“For Thanksgiving, we are distributing food baskets to military families that could use a little extra support this year,” Herrick said. “For Christmas, we are planning some wonderful surprises for our military families and wounded warriors in the area.
Anything we can do to add a little cheer this time of year will make a big difference to our military families,” she concluded.
The chapter is seeking financial donations and gift cards that will be used to purchase supplies for the Thanksgiving gift baskets.
Those wishing to contribute or to volunteer their time, or who know of military families that would benefit from this program may contact Carol Herrick at (580) 583-7262, or via e-mail at carol.herrick@operationhomefront.net.

BUSINESS WIRE — What to buy for your dad, who has everything? Or Aunt
Thelma who has ‘unique’ taste? Rather than spending your precious time going from store to store for the perfect gift, consider turning to the Internet and making a meaningful gift that will help others.
“Nonprofit organizations offer online gifts that you can purchase for your loved ones while making a positive impact on the community or helping people in need,” said
Sara Spivey, chief marketing officer of
Convio, the leading provider of online fundraising, marketing, advocacy and donor management software for nonprofits.
“Nonprofit gifts are perfect for that person who has everything. Since they range from practical items like feeding people in need and holiday ornaments to the quirky, such as dinosaur bones, it’s easy to find the perfect gift.”
In the comfort of your home, browse through some of the following websites and start your holiday shopping in just a few clicks.
The Humane Society of the United States is running a special gift donation campaign this year featuring its 2009 Holiday
Ornament. When you donate $50 or more, the organization will send the ornament
(along with a personalized card and nice little gift box) to your gift recipient. When you donate $90 or more, you and your donor will each receive an ornament.
Looking for a last minute gift? The Humane
Society of the United States will tell your giftee about the gift via an eCard, and then follow up with the ornament via snail mail later. Learn more here: https://secure.humanesociety.org
World Wildlife Fund has a 68-page catalog, which contains more than 200 ways to support the organization’s conservation efforts. Symbolic adoptions start at $25 and include a formal adoption certificate, a color photo of the adopted species, and a description card. Who wouldn’t love a
Meerkat “Mob”? With $100 donation you get two adults and three baby meerkat soft plushes. If you’re feeling extra generous this year, consider a contribution in any increment of $250 to get a Guardian Gift, which the WWF will use to address some of the most urgent conservation priorities our planet faces today. Your giftee will get a photograph, which comes in a bamboo picture frame, sent in a custom-designed gift box along with information about the
WWF conservation work it represents.
Explore these and other gift options here: www.worldwildlife.org/giving.
Look in your community and to the interests of the person you are giving to get inspired. Project Bread allowed one to give a Thanksgiving dinner in someone’s name, or teach children about hunger through
Holiday Spoons Project at http://www.projectbread.org.
Oxfam American offers a quirky goat, a dozen baby chicks, or a donkey that doesn’t stop braying or other gifts that do good. Other gifts, like planting 50 trees or a can of worms, add star value to a greener, cleaner environment. Or if that doesn’t float your boat, how about a sheltering tent or a nifty mosquito net? These items are essential to saving lives in the wake of disaster or conflict. Check out the full list of gifts available online at: www.oxfamgifts.com. Last year, one could adopt a dinosaur bone at Carnegie Museum of
Natural History, open one of Andy
Warhol’s notorious Time Capsules, or simply give the gift of membership — museums in your area might do the same.
Shop the Carnegie Museum at http://www.carnegiemuseums.org.
By purchasing an online gift for someone, you’ll also give gifts to yourself: often a tax deduction and the knowledge you have helped your community. Check with the charity about the tax deductible status of the gift. Regardless, the holiday giving season just got a lot easier

PRNewswire — The holiday season is a time for gathering and celebrating with friends and family, gift-giving, reflection and thanks.
To commemorate this time of year, the U.S. Census Bureau presents the following holiday-related facts and figures from its data collection.
Number of cards, letters and packages the U.S. Postal Service expected to deliver between
Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. The busiest delivery day was expected to be Dec. 17. On Dec. 15, the Postal Service expected to cancel the largest volume of mail of the season, with 960 million cards and letters processed.

“Since your front entry is the first thing people see when they arrive, you want to express your style and make a welcoming statement,” said Elaine Griffin, leading New York designer and author of Design Rules. She continued, “Hardware can be the diamond earrings of your front door.” For about $75, you can transform your front door into a knockout. Choose a Valspar paint color to match the architectural style of your home.

“We help home cooks with any turkey-related question or concern — large or small,” says Teresa Lenz, Foster Farms’ Consumer
Affairs Manager who has been at the helm of the Turkey Helpline for 15 years. “We get questions from first-time cooks who may need advice on how much turkey to buy to feed their guests, and from experienced cooks experimenting with new recipes or equipment.”
In addition to the Turkey Helpline, the
Foster Farms Web site
(www.fosterfarms.com) is a comprehensive resource for the holiday season. The site features budget-friendly holiday meal suggestions, cooking and preparation guides, carving instructions, nutrition information, food safety tips, and praise-worthy recipes such as Terrific Turkey Tetrazzini, Rosemary
Roasted Turkey and Maple Roast Turkey. The company has also developed a holidaythemed brochure, A Fresh Idea for the

Turkey Tips from Teresa Lenz, Turkey Pro from the Foster Farms Turkey Helpline
• Don’t let your guests go hungry — This is the cardinal rule for Thanksgiving. Make sure that you have enough turkey for everyone. Estimate 1 — 1.5 lbs. of turkey per person. When in doubt, go bigger and count on having leftovers for delicious meals the next day.
• Avoid a Turkey-cicle — There are two methods for defrosting turkey, in the ‘fridge
(less effort, more time) or in a cold water bath (shorter time, more effort). Whichever method you choose, make sure you allow for enough time for the turkey to thaw completely.
Turkey Weight In the ‘Fridge Cold Water*
8-12 lbs. 1-2 days 4-6 hours
12-16 lbs. 2-3 days 6-9 hours
16-20 lbs. 3-4 days 9-11 hours
20-24 lbs. 4-5 days 11-12 hours
* Change water every 30 minutes.
• Make sure your oven is big enough —
Before the big day, it’s a good idea to make sure your turkey fits in the roasting pan and fits in your oven. Cooking in someone else’s kitchen? Call ahead to confirm the oven size!
• Have turkey gear ready — Roasting pan
(or disposable foil pan), meat thermometer and foil are the basic essentials. You will also need a sharp knife for carving. And don’t forget the fire extinguisher just as a precaution.
• Check for giblets — Avoid surprises.
Make sure to check the inside cavity first to remove the giblets and/or any plastic casing.
• Keep it covered — The breast cooks faster than the other parts of the turkey. To prevent uneven cooking — or messy splatters that can be a fire hazard — loosely cover the breast with foil and uncover during the last hour of cooking.
• Take the temperature — Your grandmother may insist on her own method of checking turkey, but the most reliable method to prevent undercooking is by using a meat thermometer. The thermometer should read 180-185 degrees F in the thickest part of thigh (not touching bone) for whole turkey, or 170-175 degrees F in the thickest part of the breast for turkey breast.

BUSINESS WIRE — As the holidays approach, you can rely on Cracker Barrel Old
Country Store® to make things easier and more comfortable for you and your family.
Cracker Barrel’s Holiday Seasonal offerings will provide you with the opportunity to enjoy a break from all the bustle and activity by sitting down to one of its delicious and satisfying meals. And you can also bring some of this comfort home to family and friends with Cracker Barrel’s traditional country hams, sugar-cured hams, and freshbaked whole pies in four appealing flavors.
So you can feel ready for a busy day as the holidays approach, Cracker Barrel is offering its pleasing Holiday Breakfast Sampler.
Celebrate all the season has to offer by enjoying two eggs, cooked to order, hickorysmoked bacon, a sausage patty and your choice of country ham or sugar-cured ham with Cracker Barrel guest-favorite hashbrown casserole, and delicious fried apples.
This comes with sawmill gravy, grits, and, just for the holidays, your plate includes a sweet cinnamon biscuit — one of Cracker
Barrel’s signature made-from-scratch biscuits, cut in half, and baked with a cinnamon sugar glaze. The sweet cinnamon biscuit is a
Cracker Barrel tradition that dates back many a year.
If you want something lighter as you prepare to navigate the day, try the Fresh Fruit n’ Yogurt Breakfast, a fresh new favorite. It features low-fat yogurt topped with honey oat granola mix with pecans and almonds and is served with a cranberry orange muffin, fresh pineapple chunks hand cut in the Cracker
Barrel kitchen, orange slices, a whole Gala apple, two farm fresh eggs cooked any way you like them, and thick-sliced hickory smoked bacon or turkey sausage patties. The full breakfast is $6.99 or for those looking for something lighter, try the fresh fruit n’ yogurt platter by itself for $5.99.
In keeping with the spirit of holidays and memories, Cracker Barrel is featuring one of its traditional dishes — the popular Roast Beef
Dinner. Traditions make this time of year so memorable, and that’s why Cracker Barrel has prepared their thick-cut USDA Choice chuck roast the same way for years. It’s slow roasted in the “pot roast” tradition with care and attention until you can cut it with a fork, and it’s served covered with delicious beef gravy and your choice of three country vegetables, plus biscuits or corn muffins.
Or try the Applefest Grilled Chicken Salad, which is a fresh and festive salad that starts with marinated grilled chicken tenderloin on a bed of hand-torn iceberg and romaine lettuce.
Then Cracker Barrel adds hickory smoked bacon, honey-glazed pecans, dried cranberries, and chunks of Gala apples. It’s topped with blue cheese crumbles and served with a side of apple cider vinaigrette, all for $7.99.
After your meal, make the holidays a little sweeter with a slice of a fresh baked Cracker
Barrel pie topped with Vanilla Bean Ice
Cream. Four delicious flavors are available:
Pecan, Chocolate Pecan, Apple Pecan
Streusel, and No Sugar Added Apple (with No
Sugar Added Ice Cream). You can also take home a whole pie or give one as a gift to help celebrate the holidays. Pies are available through December 24th.
You can carve out more time for family and friends by bringing home a Cracker
Barrel Ham, Traditional Country Ham, or
Sugar-Cured Ham; just heat and serve so you spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your family and friends.
While you’re at Cracker Barrel for a satisfying meal, think about getting some of your holiday shopping done. You can select hams, whole pies, and gift baskets for family and friends.
There are three different gift baskets of Cracker
Barrel food products that start at $14.99, and you can also select whatever items you’d like from the Cracker Barrel retail store to make your own custom basket. Cracker Barrel offers free gift wrapping and will take care of shipping your gifts anywhere you want them sent so you don’t have to do all that packing and carrying yourself. All of this is to make the holidays a little easier for you!

BUSINESS WIRE — The Accenture
Holiday Shopping Survey released today finds that, although consumers intend to shop early this holiday season, a problem may be in store for retailers as shoppers fail to find the discounts that they expect.
“Holiday shopping in 2008 was defined by the huge discounts that were available — and available very early in the holiday season. In
2009, however, retailers will be reticent to offer such generous incentives in the face of rising commodity prices,” said Janet
Hoffman, managing director of Accenture’s
Retail practice.
The survey of 526 U.S. consumers found that 69 percent of shoppers expect to do the bulk of their holiday shopping by December
7 (vs. 60 percent in 2008) and more shoppers will shop on “Black Friday” — the day after Thanksgiving — this year (52 percent vs. 42 percent in 2008). However, the vast majority of consumers (86 percent) will not be moved to buy without a discount of at least 20 percent, and a quarter of shoppers will be looking for an aggressive 50 percent discount before they open their wallets.
“We have seen a ‘shift to thrift’ across all income levels during this economic downturn and breaking that habit will be the greatest challenge for retailers this holiday season,”
Hoffman said. “The winners this season will be the smart retailers that use the right customer data to offer the ‘value’ shoppers are looking for without destroying their margins.”
The survey did offer a glimmer of hope for retailers that can deliver the right deal to consumers. Despite a growing number of consumers who plan to set a holiday shopping budget (63 percent vs. 54 percent in 2008), the survey shows that more shoppers admit that they can be enticed into breaking their budgets (44 percent vs. 40 percent in 2008).
The survey also showed that the majority of shoppers (62 percent) plan to spend more than $250 on holiday gifts this year.
Discount retailers will attract the most shoppers this season — 85 percent of survey respondents plan to shop at those stores. At the same time, 45 percent of the respondents said that they would be shopping at department stores and just 5 percent are planning to shop at luxury goods retailers.
Consumers have gone cold on “hot” gift items with only 27 percent of respondents having one on their shopping list this year. Gift cards, on the other hand, are gaining momentum as nearly four out of five respondents (79 percent) say will be buying gift cards this holiday season. Troubling for retailers, however, is the survey finding that 44 percent of gift card recipients will maximize the value of the card by purchasing discounted items and a quarter (25 percent) will use their gift cards to buy regular, staple products rather than treating themselves to something more expensive. This is the exact opposite of the trend of the previous two holiday shopping seasons.
Online shopping will continue to offer store stiff competition to more traditional retailers as nearly two-thirds of consumers (64 percent) intend to shop online for gifts this holiday season. And, 46 percent of these shoppers will spend more than half their gift dollars online. Free shipping is the biggest draw for 35 percent of online shoppers, followed closely by deeper discounts than stores are offering, according to 27 percent of respondents.
The survey also revealed that cutbacks were most likely to be made on gifts for friends (52 percent), extended family (51 percent) and spouses/partners (49 percent).
Children (35 percent) and co-workers (35 percent) will be the groups least likely to receive less this year.
• U.S. Consumers Hungry for Big
Discounts
• Over a third of shoppers (36 percent) claimed that they would search for and buy mostly or all discounted items
• 44 percent of respondents stated they would decide what to buy first and then search for a store that offers a discount
• 38 percent of consumers shopping late in the season do so because they expect better discounts to emerge ping spending this year include concerns about the economy (62 percent) and a job loss or fear of job loss (41 percent)
• Gift Cards are a Must-Have, MP3 Players are not
• The gifts that top holiday shopping lists are gift cards (59 percent), apparel (56 percent) and toys (44 percent)
• Lower on the shopping list were video games consoles (30 percent), food and spirits
(22 percent) and MP3 players (15 percent)
• Three-quarters of consumers (76 percent) will spend the same for a gift card as they would a gift for someone
• 71 percent of gift card recipients plan to spend their gift card within three months or less
• 70 percent will spend the same or more on holiday shopping this year compared to what they spent last year (vs. 60 percent in
2008)
• Two-thirds (66 percent) will use only or mostly cash for their holiday purchases this year
• 31 percent of consumers using credit cards for holiday purchases expect to delay payment beyond the first month
• Negative factors impacting holiday shop-

BUSINESS WIRE — Offers.com launched a Holiday
Savings Center today to help consumers save money during the 2009 holiday shopping season. While predictions for
2009 holiday sales vary widely, Offers.com knows that consumers will seek to save money during the holiday season, and has developed the savings center to help shoppers find online deals in one convenient place.
The Offers.com Holiday Savings Center features the best
Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, coupons and deals, a holiday budget calculator and money-saving tips developed by the Offers.com editorial team. The site is available now and will be updated daily with the most current offers throughout the holidays.
“Competition for consumers’ dollars will be especially fierce this year. We’re already seeing indications of that with hundreds of new offers we’re posting to Offers.com each day,” said Steve Schaffer, founder and CEO of Offers.com.
“We’re making it easy for consumers to plan their holiday spending and stretch their budgets further by continuously updating the Holiday Savings Center with Black Friday and
Cyber Monday promotions for more than 1,600 online stores.”
The Offers.com Holiday Savings Center features tools and information that help consumers manage holiday spending by following a three-step plan: find the best offers before making purchases, plan a holiday budget and create shopping lists to help stay within the household budget.
Retailers are more motivated than ever this year to offer purchase incentives such as coupons, special promotions and free shipping offers. Offers.com is gathering the best
Black Friday 2009 online deals planned for the day after
Thanksgiving (Nov. 27) and the best Cyber Monday 2009 online deals planned for the following Monday (Nov. 30).
The Offers.com editorial team will be updating the pages daily, including Thanksgiving Day and over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as stores announce their sales and discounts. Consumers can use these offers to shop online, avoiding the crowds and rush of Black Friday while still saving money and capitalizing on these holiday deals.
The Holiday Savings Center features Black Friday and
Cyber Monday pages for 18 online stores including Dell
Black Friday deals and Buy.com Cyber Monday deals. The center also includes links to popular gift categories and blog posts with money- and time-saving ideas for the holidays covering topics ranging from how to choose a gift card to how to enjoy a stress-free holiday.
The Offers.com holiday budget calculator helps consumers plan for and track holiday spending, including gifts, entertaining and holiday travel. Consumers can enter details of their spending and the calculator automatically calculates totals in each category and provides pie-chart graphs comparing budgeted and actual spend. Consumers can print their personal one-page budget calculator after inserting their information to help track spending.
The Holiday Savings Center also features a holiday shopping list and a gift wish list for children. The printable templates will help even the most generous gift-giver spend wisely this year and reduce impulse buying and last-minute gift decisions.
Throughout Offers.com, shoppers can watch their favorite offers, stores or merchant categories using the recently upgraded My Offers Locker feature. When offers change, are about to expire, or new offers are added, users’ Lockers are instantly updated with the most current details. Users can also choose to receive these updates daily or weekly via email.
My Offers Locker is a valuable time saving tool during the busy holiday season as a consumer can access all of the latest offers in one place when ready to shop online.
“The Offers.com Holiday Savings Center not only helps consumers save money, it also helps take some of the stress out of holiday shopping,” Schaffer said. “Our editors are continuously monitoring, verifying and updating holiday offers as they become available, so consumers can be confident they have the most current and valid offer information when they shop.”

A traditional German Christmas Market is in Skyline Park, near the 16th Street Mall.
Christmas is the season for holiday lights.
Myriad neighborhoods unpack the lights and decorate houses and yards.
But sometimes, the best lights may be in a commercial area, such as the historic Old
Colorado City shopping area. Lots of white lights are strung in trees along Colorado
Avenue, making it a festive sight at night.
Santa’s in his house in Bancroft Park afternoons until Christmas Eve.
Take time to drive by the Broadmoor Hotel during the holiday season. The hotel and grounds are beautifully decorated. Many houses in the neighborhood are highly decorated as well.
Seven Falls and the canyon are festively decorated, and traditionally open during the week of Christmas for food donations to charity, between 5:30 -9:30 p.m. Go online to http://wwwsevenfalls.com, or call 632-0752.
It’s closed Christmas Eve.
Try to find time to visit Denver during the holidays. Nothing is as colorful as the City and
County Building in downtown Denver. A million tiny red and green lights and several floodlights make the building memorable.
While in Denver, check out the pedestrian mall, the 16th Street Mall downtown. There are lots of lights as well as the colorfully decorated D and F tower.
Near the tower is a German-style
Christmas market. For the 10th year, Denver has had a traditional Christkindl Market, sponsored by the German American
Chamber of Commerce and the German
Cultural Foundation. The Christkindl
Market is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday through Wednesdays and 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
Thursdays-Saturdays through Christmas
Eve. Traditional wooden stands feature
German and European gift items in this outdoor market, along with traditional German food and drink. For information, go online to http://www.denverchristkindlmarket.com.
The market is at Arapahoe and 16th, in
Skyline Park.
Denver Zoo has the lighted “Zoo Lights” event, through Jan. 3, 5-9 p.m. Admission is
$8 for adults, $4 for children. The zoo is in
City Park.
“Blossoms of Light” is in Denver Botanic
Gardens through Jan. 3. The spectacular lighted gardens are open 5:30-10 p.m.
Admission is $9 for adults and $6 for children.

BUSINESS WIRE — Everyone’s favorite “Hitman” David
Foster joins Great Performances superstar Andrea Bocelli for a new Christmas concert of holiday classics airing on
Thanksgiving night. Showcasing Bocelli’s unmistakable soaring vocals are lush new arrangements infused with the distinctive Foster touch. The inspiring concert performance, recorded at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, also features special musical guests Natalie Cole, Mary J. Blige, Reba
McEntire, Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, The
Muppets and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Among the featured songs highlighted will be “White Christmas,” “Oh
Holy Night,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Jingle Bells,”
“Silent Night,” “The Christmas Song,” “What Child is This” and many more. Andrea Bocelli and David Foster: My
Christmas will be broadcast in the New York City/tri-state viewing area on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances series in
HD on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 26 at 8 p.m. EST, with additional broadcasts continuing in December on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings).
Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN in association with WNET.ORG — one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers.
The My Christmas concert is the ultimate holiday musical experience from Andrea Bocelli, showcasing the tenor in performances of traditional carols and other favorites in English, with a few additional selections in Italian and German.
Regarding Christmas music, the star remarks, “I have long dreamed of recording a holiday album that captures the beautiful traditions of the holiday season. Every year, these songs have brought incredible joy to me and my family, and it is my hope to give back that same joy by making this album.” Of her experience singing Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas” with Bocelli during the taping, country music star Reba McEntire told the
Toronto Sun, “I sat there in awe. I just loved it. (His voice) is rich like frosting on a cake — decadent. It’s so full. I stood there right beside him and just watched him.”
An iconic figure in music who has sold more than 60 million albums to date, Bocelli continues to defy categorization, age barriers and labels of any kind. In concert or on the opera stage, he has sung with everyone from Luciano Pavarotti and
Placido Domingo to Bono and Celine Dion. In addition to his solo Great Performances concert programs, Bocelli’s many memorable television appearances include the Oscar and
Grammy Awards telecasts, mentoring contestants on
American Idol and performances at the Official Ceremonies of the Olympic Games, all of which have propelled Andrea
Bocelli into becoming a global household name in contemporary popular music.
The national PBS broadcast of Andrea Bocelli and David
Foster: My Christmas is produced by THIRTEEN for

PRNewswire — Borders is introducing an innovative new program for the holiday season designed to guarantee a satisfying shopping experience for customers. Beginning today,
Borders launches the industry’s first-ever “In-Stock
Guarantee,” promising customers that if they do not find an item in stock in a Borders store, and that item is among the more than one million titles available on Borders.com,
Borders will find it and pay the shipping costs to the customer’s home.
Borders’ “In-Stock Guarantee” applies not only to books
— any item carried on Borders.com is eligible. There is no per-customer limit on the number of items eligible for this program. The “In-Stock Guarantee” program runs through most of the holiday season, with Dec. 16 as the final date items can be located and reach customers in time for
Christmas.
“Our goal is to have every single customer leave our stores happy this holiday season,” said Mike Edwards, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer for Borders.
“We have stocked our shelves to the rafters. As a result, we hope to have exactly what customers are looking for among the hundreds of thousands of items we have in stock, but if there is something we don’t have on the shelf, we are going to get it in their hands within days, and pay the shipping costs.
“We believe that no bookseller has done this before and we are excited to break new ground in customer service this holiday season,” said Edwards. “We want customers to know that there is a new and very compelling reason to do their holiday shopping with us. At Borders, shoppers are guaranteed a satisfying shopping trip. No one else can promise them that!”
The “In-Stock Guarantee” applies only to Borders bricks and mortar stores, but there is also a free shipping program available online at Borders.com as well. Generally, orders over $25 purchased on Borders.com will be shipped for free.
Orders placed on the site before Dec. 16 will reach customers in time for the holiday.
In addition to the new “In-Stock Guarantee,” most Borders superstores nationwide are now equipped with free Wi-Fi, giving customers the added convenience of accessing the
Internet at no charge while shopping in a Borders store.
When customers log on, they are given the option to join the free Borders Rewards® program, a leading customer loyalty program with more than 35 million members. Borders
Rewards members enjoy special pricing and exclusive weekly offers not available to the general public. Not only is the program free, but it’s also easy and hassle-free because members never need to show their cards to redeem their savings offers. Importantly, Rewards members earn $5 in “Borders
Bucks” for every $150 of annual qualifying purchases made both in-store and online at Borders.com. And, when customers sign up now to join the Rewards program, they will receive a coupon for $5 off a future purchase. Borders will continue to provide additional exclusive offers to Borders
Rewards members throughout the holiday season.
Borders has made a number of enhancements to its superstores that will give shoppers even more gift options this season. Borders has expanded its Children’s Department to include hundreds of high-quality educational toys and games.
In addition, Borders has also created the Borders Ink Teen
Shops, boutique-like sections that feature a large selection of
Young Adult, Graphic and Manga titles as well as related products that appeal to the teen audience. The current merchandise assortment includes an extensive collection of
Twilight-themed items like journals, T-shirts, jewelry, pajamas and more. Borders has also developed “Teaching
Zones,” special sections dedicated to the needs of teachers that include a rich assortment of professional development books, educational titles and other materials.

Disney Interactive Studios today announced Disney’s A Christmas Carol video game is available now at all major retailers. Exclusive to the Nintendo DS™, Disney’s A Christmas Carol is an exciting storybook adventure inspired by “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” the Charles Dickens tale re-imagined by Robert Zemeckis as a major feature film starring Jim Carrey.

In addition, there are several fun holiday activities like singing carols, decorating with holiday ornaments, and cooking recipes from the Victorian era. The game features 14 interactive mini-games that include coin tossing, playing the piano and fiddle, throwing snow balls, and a whole host of card games. As a bonus, the game allows up to four players to challenge each other with a variety of mini-games on one Nintendo DS system. Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late. The film hits U.S. theaters on Nov. 6, 2009.

PRNewswire — When unpacking
Christmas decorations and entertaining guests this holiday season, don’t forget to bring your appetite for one of the sweeter holiday traditions — cookies. The unique and flavorful varieties of Archway® Holiday
Cookies will be available beginning
November 2 at many of the same grocery and mass merchandise retailers that carry the everyday Archway cookie varieties.
According to the 2008 Christmas Holiday
Profile report by The NPD Group (a leading market research company), cookies are the number one snack food traditionally eaten at
Christmas. Sixty-five percent of consumers say they eat cookies during the holidays while
42% of consumers report giving cookies when gifting food during the holidays.
To share in these seasonal traditions,
Archway is offering seven great-tasting, classic holiday varieties for the 2009 holiday season:
Bells and Stars — A classic sugar cookie baked crisp in holiday shapes and topped with red and green sprinkles.
Cashew Nougat — A shortbread cookie filled with finely chopped cashews, rolled into nuggets and carefully baked for a dense, crisp bite.
Chocolate Coconut Macaroon — Tender, sweetened coconut flavored with cocoa, formed into delicate cookies and baked to soft perfection.
Gingerbread Man Bag — A favorite holiday tradition with a perfect combination of ginger and spices baked into crispy gingerbread man shapes.
Iced Gingerbread Man — A classic gingerbread cookie lightly glazed with icing and topped with red and green sprinkles.
Pfeffernusse — A German-inspired holiday favorite with molasses, raisin paste and flavorful spices combined into a perfectly round, soft cookie tossed in confectioner’s sugar.

“We are thrilled to offer our Archway®

Archway Brand Manager Holly Tolson.
“We’re honored that so many consumers include our holiday cookies into their favorite holiday traditions and celebrations, and we are happy to once again be part of these special moments spent with friends and family.”
Under the new ownership of leading snack food manufacturer, Lance, Inc., Archway is continuing with its decades-long tradition of baking holiday cookie varieties. Only a limited amount of these unique holiday treats is baked so consumers are encouraged to buy early before supplies are gone.
Archway® Holiday Cookies retail for about

Archway® cookies are widely available in most grocery outlets for consumers to enjoy or share with family and friends. The greattasting, freshly-baked Archway® cookies are available in more than 20 soft and crispy varieties — with Archway Holiday Cookie varieties slated to be available in November

BUSINESS WIRE — Greasy gravy might taste great on grandma’s mashed potatoes, but it can be bad when poured down the kitchen sink.
When preparing and cleaning up the Thanksgiving feast, cooks should not put grease, potato peels and turkey bones down the garbage disposal. Disregarding this advice can lead to clogged drains.
“It’s important to know what should and should not be put down the drain before the Thanksgiving frenzy,” said
Mary Kennedy Thompson, president of Mr. Rooter
Corporation. “On top of that, many people don’t realize how much food they are stuffing into their garbage disposals until it’s too late.”
Year in and year out, plumbers spend the holiday season unclogging stuffing-stuffed drains. Just like retailers, the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year for
Mr. Rooter® plumbers.
But preventing kitchen sink back-ups is as easy as pie if you follow the advice of Mr. Rooter Plumbing technicians:
• Don’t put turkey bones, skin and potato and onion peels down the disposal
• Instead, throw scraps in the trash or compost pile
• Wipe greasy pans and plates with a paper towel before washing
• Avoid pouring grease down the drain
• Don’t overload the garbage disposal.
“When a house full of family and friends try to put their leftovers down the drain, it’s a possibility your pipes may clog,” Thompson said. “Disposals aren’t designed to replace the trash bag.”
When it comes to properly using the garbage disposal, turn the water on first. Then, turn on the disposal, and feed the waste gradually. Leave the water on for a short period of time after the disposal is turned off.
If the garbage disposal stops abruptly while in use, turn the garbage disposal power off, and press the re-set button under the sink (if available). Avoid operating the dishwasher if there’s a problem; it discharges into the disposal. If the kitchen sink is backing up, call a qualified plumber.

BUSINESS WIRE — Images of
Thanksgiving dinner and a house full of relatives should conjure up happy feelings and good memories. But for people like Leslie Nielson, these two ingredients are a recipe for another disastrous family gathering.
As soon as Nielson’s family sat down to their Thanksgiving spread, her sister and mother engaged in a shouting match across the dinner table, complete with four-letter words, banging fists and spitting food. Why the embarrassing uproar? Nielson’s mother thought it would be totally inappropriate to give two infant cousins of opposite sex a bath together.
According to annual research conducted by the authors of the New York
Times bestseller, Crucial
Conversations, Nielson is not alone.
Four out of five people have attended a “miserable” holiday party with their family.
However, the study of more than 700 respondents reveals that whether you desire or dread family gatherings is not determined by how likely you think family problems are to occur; rather, it’s determined by whether or not you think you can solve them when they happen. Specifically, nine out of ten people who are skilled at holding crucial conversations enjoy their family gatherings despite the unruly behavior of their relatives.
Joseph Grenny, author of the national bestseller, Crucial Conversations, says what these happy people know is that you can’t choose your relatives, but you can choose the way in which you react to their behavior.
“Choosing to say nothing or lashing out poorly only fuels the fires of family dysfunction,” says Grenny. “Rather, those who enjoy the holidays are skilled at talking candidly and respectfully with misbehaving relatives.”
Learning the art of crucial conversations is necessary to weather the holidays. That’s because results show the chances bad behavior will surface at this year’s gatherings are almost inevitable. The three most common bad behaviors you’re likely to see include:
1. Bad attitudes and grumpy relatives
2. “Cold wars” between relatives who dislike and avoid one another
3. Open conflict between relatives who don’t get along
More than half of respondents fully expect this year’s celebration will be spoiled by one or more of their relatives behaving in these and similar ways.
Grenny says that by developing these five skills, people can once again look forward to celebrating the holidays with their family:
Judge Not.
How you see your relatives determines how you treat them.
Soften judgments by asking yourself,
“Why would a reasonable, rational and decent person do what they’re doing?”
Show you Care.
When confronting bad behavior, let others know you care about their interests.
Facts First. Start with the facts and strip out accusatory, judgmental and inflammatory language.
Keep it Kind. Having laid out the facts, tell the person why you’re concerned, but don’t do it as an accusation
— share it as an opinion.
Invite Dialogue.
After sharing your concerns, encourage the other person to share his — even if he disagrees with you. One of the best ways to persuade others is to listen to them.

November 2009 21
PRNewswire — If you’re among the 65 percent of Americans planning to cut back on holiday spending as reported in a new
Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll, the Illinois CPA Society suggests taking a traditional approach to the season. Retailers are putting an old-fashioned spin on the holidays with comforting traditions like red and green decorations and resurrecting old ideas like layaways and Christmas Clubs. Give some thought to using these programs and add a few time-tested ideas of your own to make the holiday enjoyable and affordable.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, so plan ahead for it. Once popular Christmas
Club accounts are making a comeback. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Christmas
Clubs, usually at local banks, offered a special savings account on which you earned a little interest before you withdrew the money for holiday shopping. Check out the details of new variations on the idea, like Christmas
Club Cards offered by retailers or see if this type of account is offered though your credit union.
Bring things home for the holidays (but not before you pay them). Consider using layaway programs being reintroduced by retailers. Layaway programs allow you to put aside items and pay for them in installments usually without charging interest. Just the opposite of a credit card, merchandise is held until it’s paid for in full. Do check the details for each purchase; terms may vary from store to store.
Make a list and check it twice. Making a list and sticking to it is an old and obvious idea but it really helps to control costs. Decide in advance who’s getting a gift and exactly how much you plan on spending. Don’t stray from the amounts or add people to the list later.
Break the habit of holiday shopping sprees
— no impulse purchases or splurges — just what’s on the list.
Deck the halls with anything you can find in and around the house. There’s no need to spend money each year on more decorations
— use the old ones or items grandma and grandpa no longer need. Get creative; make it a family project to see how you can decorate with things you already have on hand.
Scour your memory for old craft projects like the paper snowflakes you made as a kid. Use photos as ornaments, make popcorn garlands or paint pinecones from the yard.
Let it Snow — stay close to home. Avoid costly special events; limit travel and check out local no cost events like tree lighting ceremonies or community band concerts. Don’t accept every invitation for a special night out to celebrate the season and break your budget by feeling the need to keep up with everybody. Entertain simply at home; dinners can be potluck, progressive, or organized so family and friends each bring their homemade specialties to cover different parts of the meal.
For Happy Holidays, when you do spend, spend wisely. Take advantage of the deals being offered to consumers in tough times.
These are incentives to spend so chose wisely, but look for holiday specials at stores, restaurants and other venues. There are many opportunities to save such as buy one get one free, door buster specials, coupons for additional discounts, free shipping, or getting five
$25 gift certificates for the price of four. Also
“cash in” bonus points accumulated on some credit cards to buy gift cards, a no-cost way to fund holiday gift giving.

PRNewswire — The magical procession returns to the Big
Apple this November as the 83rd Annual Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off the holiday season. On
Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 9:00am at the sound of Let’s
Have a Parade, America’s favorite holiday spectacular will step off with its signature giant helium balloons, floats of fantasy, marching bands, clowns, celebrity and large performance groups, and the one-and-only Santa Claus.
Making their Turkey Day debuts this year are four of
America’s best loved characters and three spectacular moving stages that will transport audiences to world’s of fantasy.
These new giant balloons and floats are sure to become
Parade favorites for the more than 3.5 million spectators lining the streets of New York City and for 50 million viewers watching the pageantry on television nationwide.
The 83rd edition of the Macy’s Parade will not only feature fantastic new elements and fan favorites, it will also mark a milestone moment in Parade history. Having marched down parts of Broadway for 82 years, the 2009 procession will be the first to bypass Broadway in the long running march.
Over the years the Macy’s Parade route has changed five times traveling through several different paths, from having initially stepped off in Harlem to its current 77th Street launch, the route has changed with the times.
The 2009 Macy’s Parade will begin at 77th Street and
Central Park West, travel down to Columbus Circle where it will turn onto Central Park South. Once the Parade reaches
7th Avenue it will turn once more and march down 7th
Avenue through Times Square to 42nd Street. At the famed intersection it will turn east to 6th Avenue and begin its final march down the Avenue of the Americas to 34th Street where it will turn towards Macy’s famed flagship and end at 7th
Avenue marking a 2.65-mile march.
Joining returning favorites, the following new stars of the
Macy’s Parade line-up will delight millions of spectators in their first proud procession through New York City to Macy’s
Herald Square.
PILLSBURY DOUGHBOY
PILLSBURY
The new Pillsbury Doughboy balloon makes its Macy’s
Parade debut in larger-than-life form, far outgrowing his normal 8 3/4-inch frame. On Thanksgiving Day, the
Doughboy will march down the route with his arms outstretched, his bright blue eyes shining ready to ring in the holidays. At more than 63 times his traditional size, the
Doughboy balloon will measure 53.7 feet in length, 34.4 feet in width and will be 46.4 feet tall. This Doughboy will rise to the occasion filled with 12,280 cubic feet of helium.
RONALD McDONALD®
McDONALD’S®
Ronald McDonald® first made his Macy’s Parade debut in
1966, holding a bouquet of party balloons that had taken him on a Thanksgiving joy ride. In 2001, a second Ronald
McDonald balloon made its Parade debut flying down the streets of Manhattan bringing joy and laughter to millions.
This year, Ronald is in a playful mood and has strapped on the world’s largest pair of ice skates for a fun-filled holiday activity. Measuring 76.4 feet long, 28.8 feet wide and 48.6
feet tall, Ronald will be inflated with 13,650 cubic feet of helium on Parade day.
SAILOR MICKEY
DISNEY CRUISE LINE
Ahoy matey! Get on board the ultimate family cruise with
Sailor Mickey at the helm. Sporting his nautically inspired red, white and blue sailor gear, Mickey will salute the crowds as he rides down the Parade route. Sailing aboard an anchor that is approximately four times the size of an actual cruise ship anchor,
Mickey measures 48.1-feet long, 33.6-feet wide and 60.9-feet tall. Sailor Mickey will be filled with 14,750 cubic feet of helium on his maiden voyage on Thanksgiving Day.
SPIDER-MAN
MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT
Millions of New Yorkers will feel their Spider-senses tingling on Thanksgiving morning when New York’s own neighborhood Super Hero(TM), Marvel’s Spider-Man, makes a triumphant return to the skies over Manhattan to ensnare a new generation of fans. After a decade, the legendary crimefighting web-slinger returns to the Parade line-up in celebration of Marvel’s 70th Anniversary. Spider-Man made his
Macy’s Parade debut in 1987, becoming an instant classic. The new, more modern and muscular Spidey is in full crawling mode with one hand set to release his web. On Parade day, the Spider-Man balloon will measure 78-feet long, 37.8-feet wide and 29.1-feet tall and will be filled with 11,800 cubic feet of helium.
LOCAL HEROES HELPING EVERYDAY
HAMBURGER HELPER
This Thanksgiving, we give thanks and recognize our neighborhood firefighters, doctors, nurses, crossing guards and police officers on the “Local Heroes Helping Every Day” float. Just like Hamburger Helper®, which each day helps families across America with dinner, these important people lend a helping hand every day and should be celebrated.
Taking center stage on the float is a very special fire truck, complete with a hydraulic ladder, that will bring about a happy ending this Thanksgiving as all of our local heroes come together to save a distressed cat caught up in a tree.
SANTA’S SLEIGH
Straight from the North Pole is the one-and-only Santa
Claus. For the first time in more than 40 years, Santa will be making his grand entrance on a new Sleigh. Depicting Santa’s travel on Christmas Eve, we see good old St. Nick as he leaves the North Pole on his magical journey. The North Pole is showcased by Santa’s Toyshop home and by a giant ice and granite obelisk that is supported by ice sculptures of a Walrus and a Polar Bear. Santa’s Sleigh is a colossal float that measures 60-feet long, 22-feet wide and is 3 1/2 Stories tall. As Santa leaves the North Pole he flies over his home and begins his worldwide voyage sure to make children of all ages, BE-
LIEVE!
THERE’S A PARTY IN MY CITY
YO GABBA GABBA LIVE!
The magical world of Yo Gabba Gabba Live! comes to life on the brand new There’s A Party in My City float. Designed by the magicians at the Macy’s Parade Studio to mirror the show’s theme of teaching kids simple lessons through music,
DJ Lance Rock and the cast of colorful characters, including
Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex and Toodee, will ride on board the float. Together, they will debut a special “dancey dance” number that has never been seen before.

November 2009 23
BUSINESS WIRE — Composer, singer, actor, activist — Sting has won universal acclaim in all of these roles, but he defies easy labeling. He’s best described as an adventurer and risk-taker. As he himself has said, “I love to put myself in new situations. I’m not afraid to be a beginner.” Recorded on location at the magnificent Durham Cathedral near his hometown of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in northern England, Sting: A Winter’s Night conjures the moods and spirits of the season with a diverse collection of songs, carols and lullabies spanning the centuries. Also featured are some new songs, as well as Sting’s interpretation of classical favorites. “I’d say if I have a spirituality at all, it’s about music,” confesses Sting. Sting: A Winter’s Night will broadcast on THIRTEEN’s Great
Performances series in HD on Thanksgiving night, Thursday, November 26 at 9 p.m. EST
(check local listings).
Great Performances is a production of
THIRTEEN in association with WNET.ORG
— one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers.
Sting: A Winter’s Night captures the artist in the evocative setting of one of England’s most famous cathedrals. Standing on a peninsula overlooking the River Wear in
Northumberland, the 1,000 year-old
UNESCO world heritage building is an iconic landmark of Northern England.
Inside, the architecture and atmosphere are equally as inspiring, and it is in this setting that Sting is joined by guest musicians, including local Newcastle artists Kathryn
Tickell (Northumbrian pipes and fiddle),
Peter Tickell (fiddle) and Julian Sutton
(Melodeon). Esteemed performers from around the world also include Dominic
Miller (guitar), Vincent Ségal (cello), Scottish harpist Mary MacMaster, Ira Coleman (bass),
Chris Gecker (trumpet), David Mansfield
(violin and mandolin), Cyro Baptista, Bashiri
Johnson and Rhani Krija (percussion), and vocalists Laila Biali, Lisa Fischer, Jo Lawry and Steven Santoro. Producer Robert Sadin conducts an ensemble of 35 musicians, which includes additional string and brass sections.
Featuring traditional music of the British
Isles as its starting point, Sting and guest musicians interpret stirring, folk-based melodies including “The Snow it Melts the Soonest”
(traditional Newcastle ballad), “Soul Cake”
(traditional English “begging” song),
“Christmas at Sea” (traditional Scottish song),
“Gabriel’s Message” (14th century carol),
“Balulalow” (lullaby by Peter Warlock) and
“Now Winter Comes Slowly” (Henry
Purcell). Two of Sting’s own compositions are also featured: “Lullaby for an Anxious
Child” and “The Hounds of Winter,” which originally appeared on his previous release
Mercury Falling.
“Winter is a season I’ve always had an affinity for,” says Sting. “It’s certainly rich in terms of inspiration and materials.”
Born a milkman’s son in Newcastle,
England, Sting met Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, who formed The
Police in 1977. The band quickly became a success in both the U.S. and the UK, scoring several No. 1 hits including Roxanne, Every
Breath you Take, King of Pain and Every
Little Thing She Does Is Magic. The Police earned five Grammy Awards and two Brits, and in 2003, they were inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
With the release of Dream of the Blue
Turtles in 1985, followed by Bring on the
Night, Nothing Like the Sun, The Soul Cages,
Ten Summoner’s Tales, Mercury Falling,
Brand New Day, All This Time, Sacred Love and Songs from the Labyrinth, Sting has evolved into one of the world’s most distinctive and highly-respected solo performers, collecting an additional 11 Grammy Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three
Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s
Century Award and MusiCares Person of the
Year for 2004.
A production of Graying & Balding, Inc., in association with Universal Music Classical
Management & Productions (UMCMP) and
THIRTEEN for WNET.ORG, the production is directed by the Emmy Award-winning team Jim Gable and Ann Kim. A DVD of the program will be released November
24 on Deutsche Grammophon, featuring additional performances and behind-the-scenes footage documenting the concert’s genesis.
Great Performances is funded by the Irene
Diamond Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, Vivian Milstein, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, public television viewers and PBS.
For Great Performances, Bill O’Donnell is series producer and David Horn is executive producer. Visit Great Performances Online at www.pbs.org/gperf for additional information about this and other programs.
