2014 ANNUAL REPORT
A MESSAGE FROM DOREEN PERKS, FOUNDER
The year 2014 was a remarkable period of growth and development for the Bob Perks Fund.
We have settled comfortably into our new structure. The roles of our new Board Chair and
Executive Director have been performed beautifully by Lori Proper and Norma Keller,
respectively. Lori’s leadership has proven to be a wonderful guiding force as we continue to
grow and mature as an organization. And Norma’s dedication to expanding the Bob Perks
Fund’s reach is preparing us to support the growing needs of the organization and the patients
we support.
The Bob Perks Fund is being challenged to continue to find new ways to raise more funds each
and every year. A big accomplishment for us in 2014 was the expansion of personal and corporate sponsorships, as well
as the addition of significant new support from local private and community foundations. These organizations are
making a significant impact on our ability to reach as many cancer patients as possible. We appreciate each and every
one of them, and we look forward to working with them to continue to promote our mission in 2015.
1
HISTORY AND MISSION
The Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund was established in 2006 in memory of Bob Perks, a State College native, who
passed away in 2005 after a long battle with melanoma. A four-year Penn State baseball player and a founding member
of the local Coaches vs Cancer® of Penn State, Bob died at age 42, leaving behind his wife Doreen and two very young
children. To fulfill Bob’s commitment to those battling cancer, Doreen and Bob’s family, friends, and colleagues
established the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund. Those who receive this support do not have the financial resources to
pay for many of their most basic living expenses including rent, utilities, food, car insurance, and gas for cancer
treatment travel.
A 2014 Huntingdon County recipient said “Never in a million years did I think I would be in a situation where I was
fighting for my life but here it is. The unexpected costs of fighting cancer are astronomical. My fiancé tells me that I
have one job – fight for my life and survive this. As the bills pile up, this is hard to do but with your help, my stress level
is much lower. It is with deepest regard that I thank you for your help in easing my financial burden.” Many local
families fighting cancer are faced with the decision to heat their homes or put food on their tables. The emotional
pressure of unpaid bills and the tough decisions about how to care for themselves and their families is overwhelming
and often stands in the way of focusing on their healthcare. This is where the Bob Perks Fund steps in, working to
reduce the financial burden and stress faced by cancer patients so they can focus on their treatment and recovery.
In the past nine years, the Bob Perks Fund’s history of growth and development to fulfill its mission is truly remarkable.
With over $204,000 distributed in 2014, up from $16,000 in 2006, this organization has had a major impact in changing
the lives of cancer patients in Blair, Centre, Clearfield, and Huntingdon Counties. All of the funds distributed are
donated by individuals, families, community and faith-based organizations, businesses, local foundations, Bob Perks
Fund special events, and other events held on our behalf. By early 2015, the Bob Perks Fund will have distributed ONE
MILLION DOLLARS since its inception in 2006 and we look forward to celebrating this major milestone at a “Thanks a
Million” gala at Toftrees in September.
SERVICE, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN 2014
In 2014, the Bob Perks Fund provided financial assistance to pay eligible expenses submitted through 267 approved
applications. All applicants funded by the Bob Perks Fund are referred by members of their cancer treatment team. The
distribution of approved applications by residence in the four-county area served by the Bob Perks Fund included:
80 Blair County
89 Clearfield County
64 Centre County
34 Huntingdon County
In 2014, cancer patient applications primarily originated from UPMC Altoona (Blair), Mount Nittany Medical Center and
Cancer Care Partnership (Centre), Geisinger Health System (Centre), Nathaniel Yingling Cancer Center (Clearfield), and
Home Nursing Agency (Huntingdon). The Bob Perks Fund could not provide assistance to cancer patients without
successful, collaborative relationships with our referral sources. They are truly our partners in service to cancer patients
and we thank them for their efforts that contribute to our success.
The importance of the Bob Perks Fund in the lives of local cancer patients is reflected in testimonials provided by
healthcare professionals:
"The assistance our patients receive from the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund is essential in helping people to
overcome financial barriers during cancer treatment. Without the Bob Perks Fund, there would be a gap in our ability
to help patients who need financial assistance. Situations do arise where patients need prescriptions or durable medical
2
equipment right away and they cannot afford the co-pay. When this happens, we turn to Bob Perks Fund and they are
always responsive when we need them. In this way, it is truly a lifesaving assistance program. I do not know what we or
our patients would do without the Bob Perks Cancer Fund." – Kristin Sides, BS, Patient Navigator, Mount Nittany Medical
Center
"The Cancer Program at Mount Nittany is a proud partner and beneficiary of the Bob Perks Fund. Thanks to their
efforts, people facing cancer in our community have a resource that is unheard of in other places. Doreen's vision to
have funds available to help support patients experiencing financial hardship as a result of their diagnosis has made it
possible for us to mitigate some of the barriers that cancer presents. I have worked with this remarkable organization
since its inception, and serving on their Allocations Committee, I can speak firsthand to their good work. I am a proud
supporter of this wonderful group." – Aileen Galley, Director, Penn State Cancer Institute
Support for applicants falls into four major categories: rent and utilities, food and gas gift cards, automotive, and
medical expenses. The distribution of over $204,000 to meet these needs was a $29,000 increase over funds distributed
in 2013. While we funded 100% of the needs presented in the 267 applications, our fundraising fell short of meeting this
increased need. As a result, we were forced to reduce the 2015 maximum per application from $1,000 to $750.
As we move ahead in 2015, the Bob Perks Fund is working to identify additional sources of funding to meet 100% of the
eligible needs presented through our application process and to work toward restoring the maximum per application to
$1,000.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS & NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
With the establishment of the first Executive Director position in 2013, the Bob Perks Fund was able to move forward to
increase awareness of Bob Perks Fund services and establish new funding opportunities in Blair, Centre, Clearfield, and
Huntingdon Counties.
Blair County
In the four-county area served, we experienced the greatest increase in allocations in Blair County with $63,000
allocated in 2014, up from $33,000 in 2013. Altoona-based Sheetz, Inc., a major contributor and critical source of
support for applicants served by the Bob Perks Fund, donated more than $15,000 in complementary gas cards for
distribution to local cancer patients. The 2nd annual “Kicks@Cancer,” event hosted by Charla Brumbaugh’s Community
Connections once again supported the Bob Perks Fund and Albemarle Corporation of Tyrone served as a first-time
$1,000 sponsor of our “Tailgate Party.” In addition, the Bob Perks Fund received a generous grant from the UPMC
3
Altoona Foundation and established a collaborative relationship with the Tyrone-based Breast Cancer and Women’s
Health Institute of Central PA. The Bob Perks Fund thanks Sherry DelGrosso and Lannette Johnston for helping us move
ahead in these areas.
Clearfield County
The Bob Perks Fund was fortunate to be the beneficiary of two Subaru “Share the Love” events held by Wilkinson Subaru
in Curwensville and Johnson Subaru in DuBois with proceeds totaling $12,000. Jennifer Lanich held a successful “Mikey’s
Old School Ride” rally to honor her husband Mike, a Bob Perks Fund recipient, who passed away in 2013. In addition, we
received a first-time grant of $ 1,000 from the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation to purchase food gift cards for
Clearfield County recipients of Bob Perks Fund support.
Centre County
We are grateful for the unique partnership the Bob Perks Fund has with Coaches vs Cancer® of Penn State and the
American Cancer Society in Centre County. We received over $51,000 for 2014 and are thankful for the generous CVC
sponsors, donors, and volunteers that made this possible.
A very resourceful Jamie Stocker created a new event to support the Bob Perks Fund and local cancer patients. “Wine
and Conversation,” supported by Stocker Chevrolet and the Gene and Kathy Stocker Family, was held at Celebration Hall
and raised more than $10,000. The Ken Tressler Family held its second, successful Pig Roast in Snow Shoe, raising
$3,500. Supelco employees held a 5-K Run and our good friends at Forever Broadcasting made it possible for the Bob
Perks Fund to receive proceeds from the Bryce Jordan Center’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra event. And we especially
appreciate the generosity of Rex Energy Corporation, our MAJOR event sponsor of 2014.
Foundation support continued to be a mainstay of Bob Perks Fund contributions, with continuing grants from the Mount
Nittany Medical Center Foundation and the Geisinger Foundation, and new support from the Ferguson Foundation, the
Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094 David B. Garver Fund, and the Bellefonte Masonic Lodge #268 Carl Fisher Memorial Trust.
Centre Gives, a 36-hour online fund-raising event held by the Centre Foundation, was once again a major source of
support for the Bob Perks Fund, with 60 donors contributing $18,840. The Bob Perks Funds extends its thanks to Blake
and Linda Gall who “double matched” the Centre Foundation’s proportional matching funds, bringing the grand total to
almost $27,000.
Huntingdon County
Early in 2014, the Bob Perks Fund was accepted as an Affiliate Member of Huntingdon County United Way, making it
possible to be included in their 2014 campaign and receive designated donations. Through United Way, we enjoyed
opportunities to make presentations at the Huntingdon County Rotary Club, JC Blair Hospital, ACCO, and other local
businesses. Media coverage in the Huntingdon Daily News led to the Bob Perks Fund receiving a $1,000 “Tailgate Party”
sponsorship from US Silica in Mapleton Depot.
In other activities, the Huntingdon High School Girls Soccer Team raised $1,840 through their “Kick Out Cancer” event
and the “Gutsy Girls” held an event at Mimi’s Restaurant to promote awareness of the Bob Perks Fund. We especially
want to thank Ms. Rickey Himes for her promotion of Bob Perks Fund services and for her role in raising funds to help
Huntingdon County cancer patients.
FUNDRAISING AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Calendar 2014 was a very successful year for Bob Perks Fund special events, including the “Rock the 80’s” Concert, held
at The State Theatre in March; the “Summer Soiree,” held at the home of Marc and Madeline Hertzberg in July; the
“Tailgate Party,” held at Mountain View Country Club in November; and a Holiday Campaign in December. Sponsors for
4
these events and the volunteers who made them possible are included in this report and we thank Assistant Director Jen
Finkle for her enthusiastic and effective administration of these events.
Major objectives for the Bob Perks Fund in 2014 included increasing awareness of our services to local cancer patients,
securing new donors, and connecting with new fundraising opportunities. Because 75% of the funds distributed to
cancer patients are generated in Centre County, new outreach efforts were made Blair, Clearfield, and Huntingdon
Counties, using print and social media.
We are thankful to those who supported us in accomplishing this objective: Rowland Creative, Barash Media, the Centre
County Gazette, Centre Daily Times, Huntingdon Daily News, Tyrone Daily Herald, The Progress in Clearfield County,
Forever Broadcasting, and other media resources that promoted our work. In 2015, renewed efforts will be made to
secure new sources of funding from the four-county area we serve. Since its inception in 2006, the Bob Perks Fund has
never denied funding to an eligible applicant and we are working to maintain this successful history of assistance to local
cancer patients for years to come.
“WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU”
The success of the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund in providing support to local cancer patients is largely dependent
upon the generosity, creativity, hard work, and good will of many dedicated supporters. We express our great thanks to
the Bob Perks Fund volunteers, contributors, and sponsors listed below and to the many others who provide assistance
through Coaches vs Cancer® of Penn State and other events which support the Bob Perks Fund.
