Club Magazine Feb 2014 15 Squash News Squash Tour Singapore 29th and 30th November 2013 T he proud boys from the Squash Section ventured to Singapore on Friday 29th November for two friendly matches against the Tanglin Club and the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC). Spirits were high, intentions were clear. The squash warriors included Ho Ming, Ho Fai, Jon Pipe, Dave Murray, Mark Sutcliffe, Tim Loh, Maarten and Nikolaj. On Friday evening, we mustered at the Tanglin for an evening of Jumbo doubles. Our friends at the Tanglin welcomed us to the facilities, including the daunting Jumbo Doubles courts. We played two round robins and a few proper matches. By the end of it, we had a pretty good grasp of the running patterns on the courts, or so we thought. Maarten went all out and was exhausted by the end, while Jon got the hang of the game pretty early on and claimed he won all his games. Ho Ming and Ho Fai - our big young guns – were seen running a fair bit around the courts. While Tim was just coming to grips with the game, Dave displayed 16 Feb 2014 his ballet pirouette-like squash shots. I [Nikolaj], for the most part, ran from corner to corner. We retired to the beer garden afterwards and had a lovely curry buffet, a few jugs of Tiger draft, a few bottles of white wine, and some very good conversations... A big thank you to the Tanglin Club for their incredible hospitality, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. On Saturday morning, we played a good round of golf. All but 3 of us played, and it was Ho Ming and Ho Fai’s first time on a course. Mark Sutcliffe, who arrived at 1am that morning and was at the course at 8am sharp, led all the way, and was the eventual winner on the day. The same afternoon, we stepped up to the plate to face SCC’s finest squash players. I had downplayed our top guys, but perhaps not enough as it turned out. SCC had their top guys lined up for us, including their number one player, who I might add is another great and very talented Danish squash player. Ho Fai and Ho Ming played against the 44 year old Dane, and what a great game of squash we witnessed: rallies that never ended, great runs, even greater gets and an incredible effort by all. All of us played 3 games against 3 different SCC guys. Jon P had a great first game where he barely went down to a young kid 1-2 . I did my best to recapture some lost ground from the first few matches. Dave continued his ballet squash, but with the warm outdoor courts, the balls were very bouncy and his kill shots from HK didn’t have the same ‘kill effect’ in Singapore. Maarten had some really long games, and Mark, being on his Pictured here with Wai King, a loyal supporter of squash and a long time SCC member SQUASH Christmas Party W e had a great turnout at the Christmas Party on a cold and wet evening. To assist in the Christmas spirit, we raffled “shots” which were handed out, and matched by one of our sponsors, Damien Laracy of Laracy and Co. After 5 “awards” (shots), he advisedly passed the baton to Lee Robinson, the Section Treasurer and then to Adam Wilson, the Section Chairman. 12 “awards” later which somehow equated to 12 reasons to get into the swing of things! The live band was enthusiastically received by the “shot” fuelled party goers dancing up a storm (they really still do that robot thing and the John Travolta gyrations? My grand dad told me about those…) Diary Dates WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT 15th February 2014 Join a team to represent your home country and wear something patriotic. Rules are the same as in the Wing Ding. Scott Semple, Soccer Section Captain H ello, hello, Kung Hei Fat Choy to one and all and welcome to the Year of the Horse! In this month’s edition we’ve got a review of the social match of the year, which is the traditional Scotland vs England clash on Boxing Day. Following on from his recent win in the Feeney Jug, Ashley Dyer proved that he has the Midas touch at the moment by stewarding the England and B.N.O. team to victory over Scotland. Yet again the sky was blue in what were perfect conditions and it pains me to say it, but Ashley and his charges thoroughly deserved their victory. Both squads were yet again at bursting point and there are early discussions at the moment into the possibility of splitting the fixture into two separate matches, one for the youngsters and one match for the veterans. We would also like to see more youth teams take part next Boxing Day and personally I hope this comes to fruition as there is always lots of interest in this game. Dynamics head honcho Perry Tunesi also provides a match report from the recent match between his side and the Toy Trade. The HKFC have been hosting the Toy Trade for a number of years now and this ended up being quite an event with over 200 people coming along on the evening to support the event which was all in aid of the children’s charity The Fence Club. The charity’s motto is “Strive Mightily but Eat and Drink as Friends” and that is exactly what happened well into the wee small hours! There was also the Christmas Quiz hosted by our very own Soccer Section that once again was a terrific night. Huge appreciation yet again goes to our now resident quiz master Kieran Flynn for the effort that goes into putting the quiz together, although the questions could be a wee bit easier! Thanks also to Kieran’s assistants on the evening, Allan Jackson and Neil Pal. Please be sure to check out the fixture list on the Soccer Section website (www.hkfcsoccer.hk) to keep up to date with the fixtures this month. One to certainly look out for is the inter-club derby match between HKFC & Lucky Mile on Saturday, 15th February. Kick- off is 8:15pm and it should prove to be another enjoyable encounter. Thanks to a last minute strike from Tony Hamilton-Bram, Albion also face Colts in another Sports Road derby this time for a place in the quarter-finals of the YYL Cup whilst Wanderers face Squadron. Both these fixtures take place on Sunday, 23rd February with kick-off times to be confirmed. On the horizon we have the HKFC International Soccer 7’s to look forward to. The organisation is well under way and I know I say it every year, but this has the making of being the biggest and best yet! I can’t say too much at the moment but this will be the strongest line-up the tournament has seen! The actual tournament will take place from Friday, 23rd May until Sunday, 25th May. More details of this to come in the coming months. In the meantime, all that remains for me to do is to wish you all Health, Wealth, Happiness and Prosperity in the coming year. The victorious England team (at least they still remember how to celebrate) England vs Scotland Boxing Day Clash O ver the last few years Scotland had been on their best run in HKFC history. A convincing win in 2010 was backed up by a well-fought draw the following year. Scotland then held on to the trophy with a second half rally to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 despite coming under siege in the final minutes. Those results have now been confined to the history books as England came away worthy winners of one of the best North South of the border games in living memory (unless of course you are Mr. Charleston). This was a keenly contested battle between players on each side selected A Happy Terry Harris with sons Calvin and Leighton 20 Feb 2014 Normal service resumed from the Club’s top side right through to the social ranks and Junior coaches. Played under blue skies on a crisp Hong Kong winters day Scott Semple fielded a Scottish line-up to kick the game off leaving some of his more loosely related brethren on the bench. A nice touch, but tactically aware to boot as the England side started with a stronger side leaving the squad players to make their mark later in the game. And so it was England after some early pressure took the lead after 10 minutes or so with Tony “that’s what I do” Hamilton opening the scoring. He backed this up soon after with another well taken goal as England piled on the pressure. The pace of Simon Galvin on the right hand side will always cause problems at this level and Jamie Milne was seeing two Rob Scott’s for most of the 1st half, a combination of Rob’s fleeting footwork and a 6am finish. After a couple of changes for the blues they steadily started to get into the game and with players such as Stewie McInnes, both Andy and Charlie Hunter, Allan Fraser and John Ramage, they will always create chances. Scotland only needed a half chance, and following a terrific delivery from Jamie Milne on the run the ball was cut back to John Casey on the edge of the box who scored a sublime volley. The two goal cushion though was soon restored as Tim Phillips was rewarded for his tireless running with a cracking finish. Fears of a repeat of the 2012 score line for England were soon forgotten early in the second half despite Scotland upping the tempo with pace and quality from sister countries, they were kept at bay by England BNO passport holder Hung Jai. England built on their lead thanks to a fine defensive performance and a smashing second half goal from Rich Maton. As legs tired the game opened up which played into the hands of the fitter England team, and unlike recent years they could keep the Scots at arm’s length, to run out worthy winners 5 – 3. Thanks to the referee and his linesman for letting the game go and understanding the nature of the fixture and I look forward to hosting the Scottish team next year. Scott Semple SOCCER Dynamics vs The Toy Trade Match O n Tuesday 7th January, Dynamics hosted the UK Toy Traders at the chilly but noisy Sports Road. The Toy Traders founded the Fence Club, which supports children’s charities by way of making toy donations and particiating in various fundraising activities. One of such is the annual charity tussles between the HKFC and the Toy Traders. This annual event usually produces exciting matches characterised by grittty, determined play with plenty of goalmouth action. The match this year was no exception and ensured the large, vocal crowd were entertained for the full 80 minutes. Valley and Wanchai. This goal, the 4th Dynamic goal of the evening, put an end to a probable Toy Traders second half comeback and effectively sealed an otherwise close match. Perry Tunesi The game was a well-balanced affair with the enthusiasm, youthfulness and pace of the toy traders finding it tough going to match the cultured passing game which has been the Dynamic trademark of recent years. The home team ran out 5- 2 winners with a Pimlott brace, Page, Foxy and Grabo appearing on the score sheet. The pick of the Dynamics goals was a 50m Grabo chip from the kick off - catching the Toy Traders keeper somewhere between Happy Toy Trade Goal of the Match: Anto Grabo Toy Trade Man of the Match: John Pimlott Crusaders Soccer Crusaders planning for their 2nd tour A fter the highly successful inaugural HKFC Crusaders tour to Cambodia last June, plans are already being discussed for the return tour in June 2014. The tour is made possible with English Premier League money and the continuing and generous support and sponsorship of the Prudential. The Crusaders will again plan to pack their bags and strut their stuff in the Cambodian heat and on the long grassy pitches of Phnom Penh. After a drill session with local players from the IndoChina Starfish Charity http://www.indochinastarfish.org/ football/ followed by an exhibition match, the Crusaders will show the local community how far they have progressed skill wise and more so, in their ability to find the “back of the net”! Nigel Merritt, Head Coach of the Crusaders, hopes to take more players to Phnom Penh in 2014 compared to 2013. “ 2013’s tour tested the resolve of the players to adapt to playing in a different environment, whereas 2014’s planned tour will test the resolve of Phnom Penh having the Crusaders back in the capital!” Nigel was overheard saying ! Courtesy of FIFA sponsorship via the Indochinastarfish Charity, Nigel will also visit Phnom Penh early 2014 for one of hopefully a few visits, to coach the local Proud to support HKFC Crusaders special soccer coaches in drills and specific targeted sessions for players with special needs. Kate Griffin, from the Indochinastarfish Charirty in Cambodia, told the Club Magazine that the special needs prorgamme in Phnom Penh is in its early stages of development, and the longevity of the HKFC programme can offer them valuable advice and experience on how to grow their own programme and promote engagement between players. Nigel added that “fostering a relationship between the 2 organisations (Hong Kong and Cambodia) is paramount in sharing the experience of players with common needs and objectives”. Club Magazine Feb 2014 21 Hockey News Hockey Section Christmas Party 2013 W ith a Disco Fever theme encouraging all teams to don their best fancy dress (albeit with some interesting interpretations), the contest was laid wide open: Lady Gaga looked particularly disco, whilst the Ladies’ As took a more elegant approach to the theme with Philip Treacyinspired LP fascinators. The Mens’ As invested in some bespoke tailoring, with their stylist Gus creating an outstanding all in one combination (useful for easily identifying those who seemed to be trying to flirt/irritate the event managers later on that evening). But hats off to the Ladies’ Bs and Cs who brazenly turned up wearing their rollerskates. Rumours of a team dance-off had been escalating and it quickly turned into the focal point of the evening (bar the frequent threats to close the venue and bar, calling on Nick S-W to use his strong negotiating skills more than once]. The Ladies’ As led the charge, with Pat creating a frenzy with her ‘Flash Dance’ solo in the last few moments, however, the Dinos, in their ‘Thriller’-inspired skeleton suits, set the bar offering an all-dancing, allsinging performance. The junior squad members of the Men’s C team inspired with a performance that seemed so natural it could have been unrehearsed, and the Ladies Bs and Cs impressively 22 Feb 2014 managed polished performances despite a few wayward roller girls. A homing call to a relatively unfrequented bar in Wan Chai signalled the end of the party, suffice to say the fun and antics continued. A huge thanks to Ida and Lyric for helping out, and to each team’s social secretaries for helping to get a great turnout. Lastly, thanks to Wing from the H team who captured each moment during the evening – check out the photos on Facebook over the next couple of weeks! Now for the End of Season Party… Save the date: 7th of June! HOCKEY Bangkok Hockey Tour December 2013 BKK 2014 will be remembered as the tour of surprises. The first surprise was starting Game 1on a Saturday morning with a full team! Unfortunately, the result was less of a surprise. Fuzzy heads and fuzzy pitches, and an opposition of eleven 18 year-old Sri Lankan’s, left us on the wrong side of a 4-0 result. Having regrouped and delegated the necessary tour duties, cohesion settled the team. A draw against the Royal Thai Defence Core (and Sukum taking care of ‘international relations’), followed by a walkover victory left us sitting third in our group on goal difference and into the Plate competition on Sunday. Before that, we had the unexpected (well, to some at least), pleasure of the knock-out “International Cup”. This is probably a good opportunity to thank Sukum for his head hunting skills and also to thank his local recruits, Jin and Ink, who injected some badly needed pace and skill into the side! The first hurdle was KCC. HKFC won on flicks courtesy of Harry (who can flick almost as well as he can serve beer). Next, it was the Sri Lankans again, and this time a well earned draw, thanks to some stoic work at the back from Chi and Bric. This led to the ‘inevitable’ win on flicks again and a spot in the final. Having held out well to a strong Rangers team for almost the entire match, a last minute goal - in near darkness - meant we had to settle for runners up. After an early night (or morning) and 3 hours of restful, restorative sleep (?), there was a sense of relief when, once again, a full contingent turned up for our first knock-out game. Jin and Ink played some sublime hockey (as we looked on in hazy awe), earning HKFC a 2-0 win vs Jamjuree. Another 0-0 draw and flicks took HKFC past YTSA. A brief interlude in games allowed us to dominate a couple of boat races, Valley (no surprise there) and Dutch were the unsuspecting victims of the still undefeated foursome: Gus, Chris, Nick and Lou. The Semi Final against Chula University pitted us against one of our own ringers (Jin) and another 5 Thai International Players! Fortunately we had Phil Smyth (KCC) and Rob Brown (ex GB squad) on hand and a beautifully taken last minute goal, this time from us (Nick), put HKFC into the final against Penang Sports Club. It was never going to be an easy game but after 15 minutes we found ourselves leading 2-1 (Sukum, Harry). A last minute surge from PSC resulted in an equalizer and the inevitable penalty flick-off. Harry’s 100% flick record remained whilst Neil pulled off the most miraculous of saves, leaving the HKFC motley crew Plate Champions of Bangkok - the final and biggest surprise of all!! It was a great weekend both on and off the pitch. Special thanks to all the non-Club players who helped out, thanks to Speedy for all the effort he put into the tour shirt design and of course our foreign affairs advisory committee, Chris Fargus and Tony White. Looking forward to defending the title next year! Club Magazine Feb 2014 23 Lawn Bowls News Members in Christmas festive colours on Boxing Day Chairman’s Report T he festive season was celebrated by the Section on Boxing Day when 36 bowlers joined a highly colourful and sociable roll-up suitably dressed for the occasion. Prizes were awarded for the player with the most ‘touchers’, Wai Ming, and the best rink of Anne, Shirley and Stanley. 2nd February will see us hold our traditional Rooster Fat Choy Cup to welcome in the Chinese New Year of the Horse and another good turn out is expected. The Men’s and Women’s Winter Leagues are now, as at 11th January, at the half way stage with the Men’s B team second in the First Division and the Ladies A and B teams respectively 1st and 2nd in their First Division so there are serious prospects of silverware come the end of the season. The lower teams are not faring quite so well but there is hope the Men’s D team may make it up to a promotion spot? Emmie Wong (far right) defeated Shirley Ma (2nd left) at the Ladies Singles Final, to go on to represent the Club in the Champion of Champions competition in March Sunday 12th January saw the Club’s Ladies Singles Final take place with defending champion Emmie Wong taking on Shirley Ma on a warm sunny afternoon. Unfortunately for Shirley, Emmie was in no mood to relinquish the cup and, showing no mercy, quickly saw off her opponent. In fact, that was Emmie’s third win in a row and she will now go on to represent the Club in the Champion of Champions competition to be held in March. The Club is going to be well represented at the National Finals to be held on Sunday 23rd February at USRC. With Phyllis Wong and Camilla Leung playing in the Ladies Pairs and Rita Tsui, Grace Chu, Priscilla Lam and Hannah Ha in the Fours. The men will also be represented in the Fours with SK Ng leading his rink of CT Wong, Terry Kung and Kenny Tam, so please make every effort to go along and support our teams. Our planned trip to Bangkok to play an Interport match against RBSC was unfortunately postponed from December due to the political troubles there, and is now scheduled to take place at the end of February, so fingers crossed we can make it this time? We hope to regroup and renew our rivalries once more the next season. Ladies A Winter League 2013 Our matches wrapped up just before Christmas and we finished with 8 wins and 3 losses. We were still able to secure the second position in the league, despite the losses and the issues we had to face. This season, we have been plagued by an overturned ankle, operations, trips and absences of all sorts, and the fact that there were so many intervening public holidays in the season did not help us to field a full team. Having only 8 core players for a 6 player team, we have been constantly short of players and with 3 of our 11 matches being away in Yuen Long and Tai Po in the New Territories it did not help. In one away match in Yuen Long, one of our players got so lost that she ended up in Disneyland and was more than an hour late. It has been a very difficult season for the captains Celina Leung and Katherine Heyler to organize the team. But despite that, it has been a fun and enjoyable season. Finishing with a second position was a nice Christmas present to all of us and now that our “young” team is getting to know each other much better, we hope to improve our position in the coming season when everyone is back and have got rid of the extra few pounds from all the Christmas pudding we packed. Veterans’ League Tennis Competition This January, the TS has entered a team into the 100+ men’s veteran’s league, as the title suggests, the combined age of the doubles team has to be over 100 with the youngest over 45. Unsurprisingly, we have a surfeit of eligible candidates, 16 to be precise, ensuring a headache for the captain when it comes to team selection. The team is made up of players from the B’s, C’s and D’s squads ranging from a sprightly 47 to the decrepit 63. We suffered a disappointing loss in the first match, but there are still seeds of optimism that we are good enough to make the play offs in March. TENNIS Christmas Social in Sai Kung O n a cool and crisp Saturday morning last month, 30 or so Tennis Society members and friends set off from the Football Club by coach for the Sai Kung Country Park for the annual Christmas Social. Upon arriving at the gates to the country park, everyone set off on a 2 hour walk along the Maclehose Stage 1 Trail - a relatively easy stroll towards Yau Lay Seafood restaurant. Most of the group managed to get there in a timely manner except for a small group who missed the turnoff towards the restaurant and turned up some time later! The food and drink went down well while a special treat was the sight of a local cow wandering through the restaurant. After lunch, it was time to board the junk that would take us back to Sai Kung town and then onto the coach back to the Football Club. Christmas Gathering at the Deep Water Bay Golf Club 19th December 2013 Eighteen brave hearts battled against the chilly weather in the early morning of 19th December at Deepwater Bay Golf Course in a traditional 3-club and a putter competition. Leading the way were Chairman Ian Petersen, Duncan Spooner and Dallas Reid – an all committee challenge. At the outset in 13 degrees weather, members eventually warmed up under the smiling sun. All went round the 9-hole course twice, except for Chairman Ian, who had to cut short his game to hurry to another appointment. Christmas lunch at the Bistro kicked off at 1pm, and all enjoyed a nice meal of tender angus beef or salmon as their mains. Joseph Wong was crowned champion with a net score of 58. David Taylor came second at 61. The third place was very closely contested with Dallas Reid’s net score of 65 overcoming Jim Suttie on the count back. Dallas had handicapped himself by losing one of his four permitted clubs and playing with only three for part of the round. Happy Christmas Lunch at the Bistro at Deep Water Bay Golf Club 28 Feb 2014 A tentative event schedule for 2014 has been compiled and is now posted on the website. Matthew Burke, who played off a course handicap of 12, struggled somewhat to play the shorter distance on the white tee. That said, on the 455-yard par 5 finishing hole, Matt carried the water and drove his golf ball onto the fairway to about 100 yards from the green. He missed an eagle putt and settled for a tap in birdie. Not only did he finish with a flourish, he also grabbed back to back nearest pins on holes 11 and 14. The other player who won back to back nearest pins was Jeffrey Man, on holes 2 and 5. Jonathan Li won the last nearest pin on hole 17, while James Suttie and Aggie Hay shot the Longest drives on hole 12. With a good level of consistency displayed throughout the day, Jonathan Li successfully defended his title to claim the Christmas Cup at 38 Stableford points. Allan Hay (36 points) and James Suttie (34 points) were the first and second runners-up respectively. James also shot a respectable score of 86 and won the Best Gross Score. The following day, a team event was played in Texas Scramble format led by Stableford winners. The result was a reverse of the Stableford format! Team led by James, Matt Burke and Owen Davis championed a score of -2. Captain Allan together with members Aggie, Joseph and Rebecca Wong came second with a score of +1. Jonathan’s team with members Shauna Davis, Jeffrey Man and Margaret Tsai came third at +2. Winners or losers, all had fun and enjoyed the good team spirit. Mark Rittmayer captured the highest score of the night at 489, followed by Simon Westbrook of Hong Kong Club at 480, and Henry Luy at third place at 469 on a game aggregate. Tip #2: Pick up your single-pin spares The HKBA’s Doubles League is the biggest badminton event in Hong Kong. It comprises of over 400 teams divided into 6 grades, viz. A to E and beginner. Grade A is mainly for those who are members or ex-members of the Hong Kong National Team. The first round of the competition is played in a 3 team round robin format. Continue practicing your spares, especially the 10-pin. Shoot across the alley at the pins on the sides. Throw a straighter ball at spares… easily accomplished by throwing the ball a little bit harder down the lane. Good luck to all our team members and we look forward to seeing them in the second round. Tip #3: Go after those tougher spares By Steven Ng Tip#1: Leave single-pin spare. It’s simple, you must hit the head pin more often. Throw from the side and not down the middle. You’ll also get more strikes this way. Do not throw a huge macho hook, a smaller hook is more easily controlled. You’ll want to do your best to not leave yourself with the challenging spares. More often than the simple spares, you won’t always be able to pick these up. To increase your odds, be smart, and throw a good straight line at these spares. If you do miss a challenging spare, blame your first ball for leaving it in the first place. Tip #4: Roll the ball The ball should be rolling, not sliding, shortly after letting go of the ball. Tip #5: Practice, practice and more practice I can’t say it any differently than that. Club Magazine Feb 2014 31 Book and Movie Library at the Club New DVDs A.C.O.D.
