Spanish Vowels
a = ah, as in father - (casa, hasta)
e = eh, as in echo - (Pepe, peso)
i = ee, as in beet
(Lisa, visita).
o = oh, as in oak - (loco, agosto)
u = ooh, as in boot - (uno, mucho)
----------y = Same rule as “i”. (“y” griega)
The “i” is the “i” latina
Interesting Consonants
h = hache, ah-cheh “h” is never
pronounced except where it forms a joint
sound with “ch” as in chocolate.
j = jota, hoh-tah,
ñ = eñe, en-nyeh
ll = elle, e-yeh, el-yeh. Similar to the
English double “l” in “millon”
r = ere, eh-reh
rr = trilled or rolled
x = equis, eh-kees sometimes
pronounced like the “s” or “sh” or in
some Mexican names as the “j”.

* The Spanish e (eh) is almost the sound between English eh and ey as in they, but without the
gliding into the ee sound so common in English.
** The Spanish and g before e or i and the j before a vowel are pronounced like a rough h in
English “house”.
