__________________________________________________________________________________________ Book review of The Little Prince I really enjoyed reading The Little Prince written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint ­Exupery. It is a short read that, in my opinion, was worth the time. There are many hidden themes and at times you must read between the lines. In other words, everything means something else. This story of love, loss, and friendship managed to be funny, sweet, and sad. ___________________________ ___________________________ Quotes from the book [Page 89­91“At some moment or other one is absent minded and that is enough! On some one evening he for got the glass globe, or the sheep got out, without making any noise, in the night..” and then the little bells are changed to tears.] [Page 89 “ at night I love to listen to the stars. It is like five hundred million little bells...”] Movie Review The Little Prince (the 1979 short film) There have been many variations of “The Little Prince”. It has been made into many films and plays. I watched one adaptation of the book. The version I watched was a claymation short film made in 1979. The film had amazing visuals, and most of the story was spot on in comparison to the book. I felt that in this film, many of the themes of the book were shown and examined though the visuals, making it easier to understand than the book. Similarities and Differences between The film and book I felt that the short film I watched and the book are very similar. A lot of the chapters, characters, and characteristics were in the movie and many of the same words and phrases were used. The feelings of sadness, hope, and love that the book gave me, in my opinion, were portrayed in the film. I found that many of the main points of the book for example love, loss and friendship were in the film. In the movie, I also found many differences. For example, the dialogue was modified to better fit the atmosphere of the new setting. I noticed that two chapters of the book were removed from the short film. In these chapters, the little prince and the main charter set out to find water. They talk about how the beauty in the desert is hidden. I felt that these chapters were important and I was sad that they were not in the film adaptation. Summary The book is about a pilot that crash lands in the middle of the Sahara Desert where he meets a little prince, who has fallen to Earth from an asteroid. The little prince then describes his travels from his planet to Earth with all the people and things he meets along the way. The pilot learns more about the little prince and his planet through their conversations. The
pilot has never had a real friend and after making the acquaintance of the little prince he finally feels he has.
