CEFT celebrates 50 years
The Czech Educational Foundation
of Texas (CEFT), founded in 1954, will
begin its anniversary celebrations this
year at its annual meeting and program
in the town of West on Saturday, Jan.
24, at the West Community Center.
The celebration coincides with the
commencement of a campaign to endow a CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture in the College of Music at the University of North Texas
(UNT) in Denton.
The residency will promote Czech
music and culture in Texas through exchange of Czech artists and educators,
the staging of festivals and colloquia
of Czech music and the mounting of
Czech operas, as well as conducting
outreach throughout Texas, particularly
in Texas-Czech communities. The
UNT College of Music is presently the
largest in the nation with approximately 1600 students.
This endowment will be the third
established by the CEFT in Texas. The
Texas Chair in Czech Studies was endowed at the University of Texas in
1993 and the CEFT/William J.
Hlavinka Czech Fellowship at Texas
A&M University in 1999.
These endowments have contributed to the advancement of Czech studies in Texas. In the past school year
over 60 students took advantage of the
various Czech course offerings at University of Texas. The fellowship at

Mentoring month in Texas
celebrates special volunteers
Who mentored you? Who was the
friend, confidant and role model who
influenced you in your life or career?
The third annual National Mentoring
Month offers Texans a chance to think
about the mentors who helped them
and "pass it on" by mentoring someone else.
Mentoring can take many forms,
from traditional one-on-one relationships to group and team efforts organized through schools, agencies, community centers and faith-based organizations.
A mentor can play a powerful role
in a young person's life, preventing
drug abuse and youth violence while
greatly enhancing a mentee's prospects
for leading a healthy, productive life.
But, all across America, mentoring programs have long waiting lists of young
people seeking a mentor.
January was officially designated as
National Mentoring Month in 2002 by
a proclamation from President George
W Bush. The 2004 campaign theme
will be "Who Mentored You?" and
"Thank Your Mentor Day" will be celebrated Jan. 15. The official Mentoring
Month website, www.WhoMentored
You.org, features celebrities such as
Tony Bennett, Gloria Estefan and Oprah Winfrey and provides access to online Hallmark greeting cards, enabling
people to send e-messages to their
mentors. The site also allows prospective mentors to "Pass It On!" by direct-
ing them to the National Mentoring
Partnership website, www.mentoring.
org, for information about local programs in their communities.
In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry and the
Governor's Mentoring Initiative sponsor Mentoring Month. "Our children
are our most precious resource," Perry
said. "We must ensure all Texas children have the support and encouragement they need to succeed in life. Mentoring is a great way to start."

Cars for a cure
You may be able to turn our tradein into a tax benefit and help in the fight
against cancer by giving your vehicle
to the American Cancer Society's
(ACS) Cars for a Cure program.
The ACS accepts all cars, trucks,
new RVs, or even boats as long as they
are in fair condition, have inflated tires,
available keys and their titles are clear.
Proceeds from the sale of your vehicle
provide funding for the ACS to continue life-saving research, education,
and patient service programs in communities across Texas.
"This is an excellent way for Texans to give to the fight against cancer,"
said John Kyger of the Income Development Department for the ACS, Texas
Division. "Once a person decides to
contribute their working vehicle, we
make the arrangements to pick it up.
Tax information will be provided after
the vehicle is picked up and an estimated value is assessed."
During this last year in Texas, ACS
supported 38 cancer researchers investing over $20.5 million towards finding a cure. Over 19,300 cancer patients
were helped through local Society programs and services.
For more information, visit the
ACS's web site at www.cancer.org and
