BLUE SKIES RESIDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY

By: Chip Utterback, President/CEO

STAFF

You will soon be receiving a survey asking if your Blue Skies staff and Board of

Directors are meeting your expectations. This is another opportunity for you to speak directly to management and the Board – only this time it’s with complete privacy and confidentiality. While the survey will ask a number of tactical questions, it should in the end let us know if we are living up to our core values of Duty to

Service and Care, Service to Community, Commitment to those in Need, Integrity and Excellence in all We Do .

This year, we have partnered with ServiceTrac, the leading provider of satisfaction surveys to senior housing facilities, to conduct the Resident Satisfaction Survey.

You will not be personally identified in any way because your comments and answers are completely confidential . This year, for your convenience and because you asked, you may complete the survey either in paper form or online.

Start looking for the surveys to show up at your door on or around Friday, February

19. You can place your completed paper copy surveys in a Ballot Box at the front desk. We will close the survey at midnight Wednesday, Mar 2 .

Your voice and opinion matter so please make them count by using the survey tool. I’ll give us all feedback once the analysis and our action plans are complete.

Fund. This fund is administered for us by our Finance Department, and you may participate by placing a check into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are gifted on your behalf twice a year (June and December) to all hourly paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon and Barber Shop employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Special Note : In addition to those individuals you see every day such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk and

SCAM ALERT

By: Resident Counselor,ShirleyClay@blueskiestx.org

Current Scams – Repeaters worth watching:

1. USAA Scam – The USAA scam is still out there. Beware! It comes in the way of an e-mail, notes it is from USAA or USAA

Security Zone and asks you to click on a link to update your security information, or asks you to forward personal information by e-mail. Never follow an e-mail link sent from a supposed financial institution unless you have called the financial institution to verify the link first.

If you do receive a USAA scam emai l , forward it to abuse@usaa.com in order to notify the “legit” USAA institution.

2. IRS Scam –You receive an urgent call that the IRS needs to speak with you in regard to past taxes. Some residents have reported to me that the caller is angry and even threatening. Remember, the IRS never contacts you by phone, always by letter. Hang up on the caller.

New Scams to watch for:

1. Scammer’s fake Social Security email – The Federal Trade Commission reports this e-mail scam on their website. You receive an e-mail that relays new features from the Social Security Administration that can help you monitor your credit report and know about unauthorized use of your Social

Security number. You are asked to click on a link which allows viruses or malware to be installed on your computer, or a Social Security lookalike

3 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

website that asks for your personal information. Social Security always contacts you by mail unless you have an online account established already.

If you do, log into your personal account to check for notices or updates. Don’t follow random links sent to your e-mail.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS

By: Assistant Resident Services Director, TeresaSantana@blueskiestx.org

Please give the following new residents a warm Blue Skies West “Welcome” in your respective neighborhoods. Their phone number(s) will appear on the in-house channel as soon as they become available.

 Lt Col William and Agnes Williamson will be moving into #828 on Friday , Feb 22

BOB’S BLOG

Check out Bob and his “sister” (my daughter’s cat).

They could be twins! Trust me; they were not occupying the same space. They live about two miles from each other.

Bob’s antic of the week: out for an early morning walk on Saturday and someone had dropped a blanket.

Someone else must have come along and hung it on a hand rail, but once Bob saw it —it was all over. He stopped dead in his tracks, staring at it from afar.

Seriously, he put his breaks on and would not go within 10 feet of it! He finally took off running in the opposite direction. Whew, that blanket could have attacked us! Bob saved us both!

MAINTENANCE UPDATE

By: General Manager Maintenance, BrittonStacy@blueskiestx.org

Emergency Siren – Just a reminder, the emergency siren which is tested at 10am on the last Friday of every month, is scheduled for Friday , Feb 26 .

Wildlife Reminder - Please remember Blue Skies West is in the center of a large, rural area. There is a likelihood of encountering wild animals such as armadillos, feral cats, skunks and opossums, etc. We strongly recommend you do not leave pet food out on your porches for your own pets or stray animals. This will only increase the number of wild animal sightings that are not particularly wanted on campus by you or your neighbors.

Email Notifications - Let us know if you would like to sign up for our work order email notifications. When you place a work order by email, you will receive an email notification that a work order has been opened. Once the work order is completed and closed another notification will be sent informing you of what the technician did to complete the work order. There is also a Customer Satisfaction

Survey link attached in the email for your feedback. We encourage everyone to take the survey each time we complete a work order for you. It’s a great way for us to know how we’re doing. If you are interested in email notifications, just make sure to provide your email address to the Maintenance office, and we ’ll get you setup.

CATERED LIVING

By: Catered Living Mgr, MeganFord@blueskiestx.org

Laundry Service – Try out our laundry service this year! For $1.15/lb (pound) we will:

Wash, dry & fold, pickup & deliver

All clothes are washed individually (your clothes aren’t washed with another person’s clothes), and we do not use commercial equipment (we use regular washers and dryers)

We provide all detergent, and Ironing is $2.50 per item

Large items (i.e. comforters, blankets, rugs, etc.) are $15 per item

Frequently Asked Questions :

How much does a normal basket of laundry weigh? o Well, that really depends on what is in the basket, as some items weigh more than others. So, that question is a little harder to answer. I can tell you when I average everything out, the average customer gives us about

12lbs of laundry each week which transfers into about $10-15 per week

Do you weigh the items in front of me so that I can see the weight?

5 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

o We can if you would like. Our scale is portable so we can take it with us when we pick up the laundry, otherwise we will weigh it in our laundry room

Is there a minimum charge? o Yes, the minimum charge is $6 for laundry service. This comes out to roughly 5 lbs of laundry. We can still pick up your laundry if you have less than 5 lbs but you will be charged the $6 minimum

If you are interested in participating in our laundry service, feel free to call the

Catered Living office, and we can answer any questions for you. Our phone number is 568-3285 or you can email me at meganford@blueskiestx.org.

COWBOY BREAKFAST THANK YOU

By: Cowgirl Dodie

There are so many to thank for making the BSTW Annual Cowboy Breakfast such a wonderful, fun-filled event. Please extend your thanks to the following who contributed so much: David Weidner and Sodexo for all the

Tacos, the Thrift Shop for providing the Band, special thanks to the Dining

Services crew and to all those “Special Helpers” who served. Thank you!

CHECK YOUR BLACK LEATHER JACKET

BY: Wilma Lawson

Do I have your black leather jacket? Do you have my black leather jacket? We must have switched jackets at one of the hang-up areas several weeks ago. Please contact me, and let’s solve this mystery. Thanks!

AIR WARRIOR COURAGE FOUNDATION

By: Wayne Erwin

Recently, there has been considerable publicity and national attention related to the

Wounded Warrior Project. We want to make sure that all of you who have donated so much time, effort, money, furniture, cars and support to our local support program of the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen through SAMMC understand our organization "The River Rats" govern the AWCF (Air Warrior Courage

Foundation) and are not associated with the Wounded Warrior Project . If you are

11 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

interested, there is a website that evaluates and rates charities such as the

Wounded Warrior Project and the Air Warrior Courage Foundation. The AWCF is a four-star rated program by this website – Charity Navigator, a non-profit organization that “works…to guide intelligent giving.” This means that, essentially, all donations go to those in need. There is very little overhead and frequently overhead needs are covered by members. In fact, 97% of all donations to AWCF go directly to support the wounded Soldiers, Sailors , Marines and Airmen. If you have questions please contact Mike McGinty or Wayne Erwin. You can read more about those programs at the AWCF website: www.airwarriorcourage.org.

ANIMAL LOVERS

By: Kathy Bader

If you see a stray dog about the campus, let me know, and we shall try to find it a home. We have had good luck with our feral cat program. Four of our wild furry friends were caught last night (on our first attempt) and are undergoing surgery today. They will be returned to their home area on Friday. If anyone has knowledge of any feral cats in their neighborhood, please call me or contact me by internal mail. We have to make sure that both males and females cannot multiply. Thank you.

RESIDENTS’ CONCERT SERIES

By: Ginny Hallager

On Sunday, Jan 31, residents of Blue Skies, and our guests, were privileged to hear the Monte Vista Strings perform right here in our “living room.” The members of the trio were Andrew Small, violin; Lachezar Kostov, cello; and Viktor Valkov, piano.

The program was varied from Beethoven to Bach with each selection presented by a different combination of performers with the exception of Viktor Valkov, who accompanied both Andrew and Lachezar and then performed a solo Sonata by

Rachmaninoff. We were thrilled to hear the duo of Kostov-Valkov perform the

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in a special arrangement created by Viktor Valkov for our concert - a brilliant combination of piano and cello. Our series for 2016 is set.

Put the following dates on your calendars so y ou don’t miss a single one:

April 3 – Eduardo Delgado, piano, our performer through the SAIPC (San

Antonio International Piano Competition)

May 22 – Julian Tello, viola

August 28 – Anthony Bazzani Jazz Trio

October – Sasha Moutouzkine

December 4 – UTSA Master Singers

As you see, we have six concerts this year due to your generosity in supporting the series. Thank you.

2016 ASIAN FESTIVAL

By: Ann Christie

The Asian Festival of 2016 “The year of the Monkey” is Saturday, Feb 13 . This event features music, cultural performances, food, fashion, crafts and so much more. Held at the UTSA Hemisfair Campus, the bus leaves BSTW at 10am .

THE SING-A-LONG STRINGS UKULELE BAND

By: Verna Mae Roberson

The bus leaves at 6:30pm Saturday, Feb 13 for The Legacy Room at Blue Skies

East. Not only will the evening be filled with a variety of songs, but it will also be a fun way to exercise your lungs and heart. Helen Astrid of The Helen Astrid Singing

Academy in London says when you sing, “Your body produces feel good hormones called endorphins which rush around your body. It’s exactly the same when you eat a bar of chocolate. The good news with singing is you don’t gain any calories!” If you’re taking your Valentine to dinner in the Sky Lounge, come on down whenever you finish. Hope to see you there!

SOCIAL CLUB OF BSTW

By: Tom Jones & Frank Sherman, Chairmen

Several months ago, a group of residents indicated interest in participating in a Blue

Skies West Social Club by funding individual liquor storage lockers to be built in the alcoves of the Roadrunner Lounge. The resident driven and management endorsed

“Club” would promote socialization among residents with before and/or after dinner drinks, with the liquor lockers being paid for by the residents utilizing them. A

Committee was formed, a contract for construction of the liquor lockers has been let and we are now ready for construction to begin on the cabinetry.

If you are a new resident or one who has not already indicated your desire to be a part of this “Club,” there will be a short informational meeting in CC3, on Monday,

Feb 15 at 10am .

13 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

The “Happy Hours” many residents have in their home prior to dinner, will not be affected, as this will simply be another alternative for getting together and relaxing with your friends or meeting new folks. We hope to see you this coming Monday at

10am in CC3.

OVERTIME

By: Mac McDonald

On the 6th day the Lord worked overtime creating a military wife.

Because HE knew that Warriors need a girl to wed that could knock them in the head.

But, in creating such a wife, HE ran into troubling specs.

The spec's list was long, not so much to meet a warrior's needs,

But, to control his deeds.

17 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

Gabriel saw the Lord's dilemma, and flew in. On his knees said, "Sir, why not another Eve? Shapely and able to manipulate her man?"

The Lord thundered, "Standard specs do not fit the woman I see!"

Upon hearing the thunder Michael came in,

With thoughts he wanted the Lord to consider: "Sir, as your chief Warrior Angel,

It seems to me - the warrior breed will not need a delicate Eve. Please Sir, review my military specs and you will see, it's a perfect woman for the warrior breed.

"Let me see," the mighty Lord boomed. It read:

Military Wife , hard corps, 1A, dedicated of class, independent dependent, qualities for being both mother and father, able to host the most and still give a toast; plan and execute household moves around the world, have kisses that comfort a hurting child, and give their warrior reason to stay awhile.

Satan, watching from below, uttered in horror, "OMG! Dedicated class she be! Lord protect me!"

Gabriel looked at the model of this mil spec, some tall, some short, but all lovely and fair. He touched his finger to her cheek and held it wet into the air. "It leaks!" he exclaimed.

"That's not a leak," smiled the Lord, "It's a tear." "What's it for?" the angels asked.

Satan sighed knowing a tear proves she is a tough and sensitive being that he cannot bluff, and departed in a huff.

The Lord said, "It shows: joy, sorrow, pain, loneliness and pride.

"What?" the angels exclaimed.

The Lord, with kind eyes said, "Yes, her warrior will give her joy, and she too he.

They'll have sorrow and pain. There will be loneliness during deployments, but, oh, the many adventures they'll have!

Thus, on that 6th day, in overtime, God made this unique creature as wife to be for the warrior breed.

Dedicated to our wives from all the Warriors of BSTW this Valentine

GOD IN THE VALLEY

By: Ren Vandesteeg

“Then the man of God went to the king of Israel and said, ‘This is what the Lord says: ’The Arameans have said, ‘The Lord is a god of the mountains and not of the valleys.’ So I will defeat this vast army for you. Then you will know that I am the

Lord.’” I Kings 20: 28, The Holy Bible . We all have valleys in our lives. Accidents, misunderstood, loss, you name it. Ever feel like your prayers hit the ceiling and fall back down with a thud? For believers, God says He is the God of our valleys.

“ You talk of faith way up on the mountain

But talk comes easy, when life’s at its best

Now it ’s down in the valleys of trials and temptations

That’s where your faith is really put to the test.

For the God on the mountain, is still God in the valley,

When things go wrong, He’ll make them right

And the God of the good times, is still God in the bad times

The God of the day is still God in the night.” ~Lynda Randle

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE

By: Gayl Ganskow

If you are familiar with the card game Gin Rummy, you have a head start to understanding Mah Jongg (MJ). There are no playing cards here because in MJ you mix, pick, discard and arrange your tiles in combinations for a winning hand. The ideal game is played with four players; however, two or three players can play and have a great time as well. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up.

Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B&A Days, 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112. The Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor. Fridays from 1-3:30pm in CC3; Saturdays from 1-3:30pm in

CC1.

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG

By: Martha Wesson

We had a nice day of play in CC3 at 1pm on Tuesday at the end of Jan, but for some reason we had a really fun day Feb 2 that was so good some of us just didn’t want to give up and go home. We did eventually at 4:15pm, of course, but not until

Annie had wo n a total of 11 games for the two weeks (not in a row, but still…), and

Lynn (our Ohio Snowsuit champ) and Dot (our Idiots champ*) had six wins each.

There were six Razzle wins by Sande, Marilyn, Dot (two wins) and Lynn (also two wins). There were a few unusual or harder hands such as Hi-Jacks, Chopsticks and Windy Gates by Annie, Terminews, Tri Numbers and Heavenly Gates by

Martha and Picket Fence by Dot and Katherine. Sharon won with her ever favorite,

Mish Mash with no pungs (that’s an inside joke…sorry). The Hand of the Day went to Annie the first week and Marilyn the second week, but only after fierce competition and carrying-on from Nan, who actually had the title for a while and the many others who “almost won.” (* Idiots is a real hand - #60 - consisting of four like tiles in each of the three suits and a pair of winds or dragons. It is not a description of the person playing the hand as some people have misinterpreted due to its appeal to this rather wild and crazy group.)

ROADRUNNER GOLF

By: Katherine Rajczi

Monday, Jan 11, Points - The team of Mike Kasper, John Rehm, and Jim Kniker took front, back, and total with +11.5, -3.5, and +8. The team of Dick Fouss, John

Revak, Gene Kircus, and Bill Miller came along to provide the prize money.

25 Deadline: Friday, Feb 19 @ Noon - Roadrunner@blueskiestx.org

Thursday, Jan 14, Points - We again have one team taking all the prize money today. Jim Kniker, Mike Kasper, and Bill Miller scored +6, -8, and -2 to take front, back, and total. No one on the team of Don Logeman, Al Buie, and John Rehm was having a good day. I won’t embarrass them by reporting the scores.

Monday, Jan 18, Points – Well, it seems no one had a good day today. The team of Mike Kasper, Dick Fouss, Jim Kniker, and Jim Pierson won front, back, and total with scores of -1, -3, -4. The team of Gene Kircus, John Revak, and Bill Miller we shall just say played much worse.

Thursday, Jan 21 - It appears today was not much better then Monday. John

Rehm, Bill O’Hara, and Bill Miller won the front with a -7.5. Jim Pierson, Dick

Fouss, Mike Kasper, and Gene Kircus won the back and total with scores of -7 and

-15. Hope this gets better soon. This is getting embarrassing.

Monday, Jan 25, Points - First let me say congratulations to Ginny Hallager who had birdies on the team of Gene Kircus, Ginny Hallager, Dick Fouss, and Jim

Pierson were on fire on the front 9 shooting +13, not so well on the back with only

+1, giving a total of +14. This was good enough to take 1 st

on the front and for total.

The team of Tommy Thompson, Bill O’Hara, and John Revak took first on the back with +3.5. The last team (in more ways the one) was Mike Kasper, Katherine

Rajczi, and Jim Kniker just came along to enjoy the day and provide prize money for the other teams.

Thursday , Jan 28, Points - The team of Bill Miller, Mike Kasper, John Rehm, and

Jim Pierson defaulted to a win on the front with -2.5. The team of Pat Kelley, Gene

Kircus, Jim Kniker, and Tom Young squeaked to a win on the back with a 8. Bill’s team took total with a score of -11. I think it is fair to say no one was playing their best game.

Monday, Feb 1, Points - Gene Kircus, Gayle Ganskow, Jim Pierson, and Tom

Curtis took first and total with +16 and +18 just beating out the team of Mike

Kasper, Dick Fouss, and John Revak who shot +15 on the front. (Bet they thought they had a winning score.) The back was won by Tommy Thomson, Tom Young,

Jim Kniker, and Katherine Rajczi with +4.5. Also playing were John Rehm, Bill
