“Nobanno" is a pure Bangla word, which breaks into the syllables “Nobo” meaning “New” and “Aan-no”
meaning “grains”. Our program starts with the praise of the green landscape and fertile land . Rituals and
prayers to please God and asking for much needed rain for a bountiful crop are depicted through melodious
songs and intricate dances. When the rice fields glitter with golden paddy, it is time to bring the gold home.
Jubilant farmers send out calls to bring the harvest home. A good harvest brings joy to the farmers, brings
money to their coffer. Usually it is time in the rural Bangladesh to arrange wedding ceremonies and feasts.
Our last dance/musical in this segment presents a traditional wedding ceremony in Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi music is comprised of several genres that include folk, classical, baul, adhunik etc.
Modernization of Bangladeshi music occurred at different times, and rock music was introduced as a genre
back in the 1970s which grew quite rapidly and became very popular since then. A group of former and
current Bangladeshi students of University of Alberta will put forth acoustic renditions of some of the
Bangladeshi rock songs.

Jatra is the musical folk-theatre that is very popular in Bangladesh. Jatras are often very melodramatic with
highly stylized delivery and exaggerated gestures and orations. Music being the key element of the Jatra,
much attention is placed on its selection; popular tunes are created and incorporated. Musicians sit on two
sides of the stage, carrying Dholak, pakhawaj, harmonium, tabla, flute, cymbals, trumpets, behala (violin) and
clarinet, all used to heighten the overall dramatic effect of performances that are already frenzied, plus most
of the singing is done by the actors themselves. Many of the songs were based on classical Ragas
Today’s play is “King’s Entertainment”. The play will be pictured on the celebration of the victory after the
heroic win over a fight for a territory. The member of Emperor’s parliament will rejoice the victory with
traditional “Kawali”song and duet dance.

Nobo-borsho means New Year that starts with huge celebrations in Bangladesh. The biggest one is called
Boishakhi mela, named after the first month in the Bengali calendar, Boishakh. Through a very fast beating
dance, our artists will send a welcoming call to announce the first day of the year followed by calls to little
ones to come and enjoy the colourful shows. Our depiction will take you to the dance of a snake charmer with
melodious tune. Bioscope and street hawkers selling fashionable bangles, hair bands are also part of the
