The OSA Dinner, OSA Golf day, Reunions and festivals all make up part of the second half of the year for us. I do hope to see you all at some of these functions, which keep growing from year to year. Some other exciting news is that we had our first winner of the jackpot in the Club Draw for R21 000 at the end of July, so now you know it can be won and I hope to see you at the next draw on 27 August 2015. You all would have seen my feedback regarding the rugby meeting and I would like to put it on the record that if it had been cricket, waterpolo, hockey or netball, we would have had the same response to the issue because we are here for the entire campus. That being said, I would like to say thank you to those who did come to the meeting and made it a very valuable session for all involved. There is no doubt that the strength of a school is linked to the strength and involvement of its Alumni and there is no doubt that, as we have grown as an Association, we have been able to do more for our school than ever before. This, however, is only the start and we need to do more. Full stands and packed events are just some of the ways we can show our support to our great school and be part of shaping its future. Initiatives such as the Hundred Club and Make your Mark, are ways that through volume, R100 a month can be a huge part of something special. Some schools like to boast that 1 or two of their Alumni donate millions each year. I would far rather 1000 involved and engaged Old Stithians contribute R100 a month to making a difference because it shows our strength in numbers. Don’t get me wrong, millions are always welcome, but we can do so much more with all our Alumni being part of the momentum. I hope you have all downloaded the OSA app to keep up to date with events and notices, if not, you can find it in all the App stores with your username and password available from Susannah at alumni@stithian.com. It is also getting closer to that time of year where we see Christmas parties being booked all over town and if you would like to have your event at the One & All Club, don’t delay on your bookings. With all the events coming up, I am sure I will see you at one of them. Kind regards Shaun Edmeston Chair Old Stithian Association and Old Stithian Trust www.oldstithian.com 3 www.oldstithian.com 4 www.oldstithian.com 5 OLD STITHIAN ASSOCIATION ANNUAL DINNER Shaun Edmeston, Chair of the OSA, has the pleasure of inviting you to the Annual OSA Dinner . Michelle and Grant Langman (2008) on the birth of their son George Richard on 15 January 2015. Victoria and Robert Sears (1997) on the birth of their son Benjamin Robert born on 10 March 2015. Claire and Edward Shelver (1989) on the birth of their son Charles Rupert on 31 March 2015. Danielle (nee Hambloch) (2005) and Bradley Scorer on the birth of their daughter Summer Charlotte born on 23 April 2015. Old Stithian News : General Stuart James Thomas (1990) was diagnosed with brain cancer in March 2014 and underwent brain surgery in the June, followed up with radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Last month, he underwent a second operation to remove four more minor tumours that had emerged since the initial surgery. Should this second operation not prove successful, he’s considering laser surgery as an option, the latter of which comes at a great cost. In an attempt to raise some funds for Stuart and his family, David Turner and another friend are riding the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in November and are asking potential donors to pledge an amount of money of their choice for every kilometre they complete. Naturally they plan on finishing the race so if one pledges R10 per kilometre, for example, the final donation equates R947. Alternatively, a once-off donation is also very welcome. Please contact David Turner for more information on 082 719 2526 or dave@bushveldterrace.co.za. ‘The Stuart Thomas Fund’ Standard Bank Market Link account Acc. The Footprint Committee, consisting of members from each school as well as the Operations Director, assist in this initiative. St Stithians is part of the international Eco Schools project. Last year we were proud to receive our Platinum Award for the second year for our ongoing and sustainable environmental learning and management and for being a great example of a ‘green school’. RECYCLING INITIATIVES Products for recycling may be deposited at the Recycling Depot (opposite the Boys College Boarding Houses) or alternatively in one of the banks of recycling bins around campus. E-waste for all electronic goods, including old computers, can be deposited in the cage at the Recycling Depot. Please ask Sydney, the Depot Manager to open the cage. Paper can be deposited in boxes in the classrooms. Please deposit all used ink and printer cartridges in the ‘greenOffice’ boxes in the foyers. The greenSCHOOL programme diverts cartridges from landfill so they can be reused or recycled. If your company is interested in joining this initiative please contact Mel Morrison (mmorrison@stithian.com). We also support a ‘Tops and Tags’ initiative, whereby wheelchairs are donated for the collection of bread tags and plastic bottle tops. We have a building frame at the J.P. Tennis courts for the collection of square Aqua water bottles. This is for the Bottle 2 Build initiative, whereby the bottles are used to build classrooms in underprivileged areas. www.oldstithian.com 19 St Stithians cyclists to ride for Team Thandulwazi in the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge, 2015 Calling all cyclists who would like to ride for a purpose: ride the Momentum947 Cycle Challenge to help St Stithians College to raise funds for the Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy.
