Program Overview
Plurality of Indonesian na on is also the land for doctoral
candidates to explore the theories, concepts and finding
pa erns in science solving all the problems of differentness
cultures and backgrounds. Along with the Indonesian
na on as well as members of the world community which
also requires findings are universal concepts and theories.
We are also grateful to the alumni, both domes c and abroad who already holds a
doctorate who have applied their knowledge to the people of Indonesia in accordance with
the focus of their study and also to the world of science globally.

History
Program Overview
On December 31, 2003, ITB Rector Prof. Kusmayanto Kadiman formally established the
School of Business and Management ITB (SBM‐ITB) to administer both the MBA and
the Undergraduate Program.
The ITB Doctor of Science in Management Program (DSM‐ITB) provides students with an
outstanding and intellectually me culous research environment.
The aim of this program is to create a new genera on of scholars who have the following
characteris c:

SBM ITB is commi ed to contribu ng to research based university through a doctoral
program in management science. The doctoral program at SBM is to complement the
fourth discipline of management to the exis ng disciplines at ITB namely engineering,
science, and arts. The doctoral program was ini ated by Professor Surna Tjahja
Djajadiningrat as the Dean of SBM in 2008. The core team of the proposal was
composed of Professor Togar Simatupang, Dr. Gatot Yudoko, and Dr. Deddy
Koesrindartoto. The doctoral program covers a wide range of management discipline in
order to develop and contribute to the body of knowledge of business and
management. The research paradigm is not limited to posi vism but also
interpre vism, and cri cism. The aim is both to train scholars for careers in research and
teaching in business and management as well as to shape the scien fic contribu ons

Posses the ul mate comprehension, mastery, and authority on management science as
well as the relevant analy cal tools in such topics as economics, people and organiza on
behavior, mathema cs, and sta s cs. This will be useful in problem solving, theory
development, and business implementa on.
Possess the analy cal‐synthesis‐evalua on ability to study the relevant literature useful
in iden fying, mapping, and developing the latest in management science.
Posses a crea ve and methodological mindset to design and conduct an
independent research on recent management issues, and publish the completed work
in an accredited journal.
Possess the ability to pursue new findings which have both na onal and interna onal
merit, on the topics of organiza on complexity, technology, and people behavior in
facing a global, compe ve, and changing environment.
Able to communicate and implement the research findings towards developing
management science.
Produce research findings which will lead to further research development.
Possess the capacity to recognize the contribu on made by other researchers.
Academic Program
Management Science implements various disciplines in which it explains the concept
of managing resources (people, method, machine, and money) to achieve the
expected organiza on goals. Consequently, DSM‐ITB is addressed to not only those
who have a management or economic background, but also those who have the
desire to develop and implement management science in their professional
endeavors.
DSM‐ITB is a Linear Doctoral Program of the Undergraduate Program, the Graduate
Program in Management Science. However, DSM‐ITB will also accept students from
other social sciences as well as from engineering and other disciplines (this is called the
Non‐Linear Doctoral Program. Therefore, the following categories will apply at DSM‐
ITB:
 Those who hold a master degree in Management Science Ins tut Teknologi
Bandung (MSM ITB) will follow the Linear Doctoral Program
 Those who hold a master degree in non‐management science will follow the Non‐
Linear Doctoral Program
DSM‐ITB is a 3‐year program comprising 6 semesters with 44 credit‐hours for the Non‐
Linear Doctoral Program, and 40 credit‐hours for the Linear Doctoral Program.
Academic Process
The curriculum at DSM‐ITB consist of three stages:
The Qualifica on Stage: develop a basic understanding of the philosophy of
management science, research methodologies supported by the relevant sta s cal
so ware, research ‐ based competency and literature review, research ques on
formula on, wri ng scien fic papers and formula ng research proposals.
 The Research Stage: design the research, develop teh research methodology, collect
and analyze the data , and write the disserta on.
 Promo on Stage: sharpen the student’s knowledge of exis ng research and its
academic contribu on, as well as the student’s ability to defend his or her
disserta on in the oral exam.


Doctoral Non‐Linear Program consists of major and supporting elective courses of 15
credits course work, 6 credits dissertation proposal, and 23 credits dissertation
research.
Students entering DSM Non‐Linear program offered in Bandung campus have widely
varying academic and professional backgrounds, while DSM Non‐Linear program in
Jakarta campus is offered only to those with professional background.

Doctoral Linear Program is offered to those graduated from Master of Science in
Management SBM ITB.
As for DSM students with master degree other than Master of Science in Management
SBM ITB, they are required to take courses in Research Methodology 1 and 2 to prepare
their competency in writing dissertation and qualified to publish research in journals with
international reputation (SCOPUS indexed preferred).
It consists of major and supporting elective courses of 11 credits course work, 6 credits
dissertation proposal, and 23 credits dissertation research.

Admission to the DSM ITB is highly competitive, and has the following entry
requirements:
1. A Master degree from private/state accredited universities in any discipline with a
minimum GPA of 3.25. Overseas graduate must have the academic certificates
accredited by The Indonesian Directorate General of Higher Education (DIRJEN
DIKTI)
2.English Proficiency Test (EPT) ITB with a minumum score of 113 or TOEFL from
ETS.org with a minimum score of 550(pBT)/ 213(cBT)/ 79(iBT), or IELTS 6.5
3. Academic Potential Test (TPA) from OTO Bappenas with a minimum score of 550.
GRE or GMAT is acceptable
4. An Interview with designated DSM ITB faculty member. The applicant must submit
the research proposal, and will need to show any published papers (if applicable)
