THE AARP Tax Aide Central Library • McCollough Branch reSOURCE February 2016 I Adults Your Guide to Library Services I Materials I Programs Oscar Buzz Celebrate the achievements! The Shelf This February, how about some off beat paranormal romances as a change of pace from the usual Harlequin publications? Because the “paranormal romance” genre is so large, I narrowed my choices to titles that include a spunky female main character, some fantasy element, and that made me laugh out loud at least once. Steampunk is no longer a fringe culture and more and more titles supporting this genre are coming out all the time. Gail Carriger’s Soulless starts a series combining vampires, werewolves, Victorian England, and a woman who follows the beat of her own drum. And really, who doesn’t love a Scottish werewolf? Isaac Marion’s book, Warm Bodies made zombie lovers buzz about this zombie/human star crossed lovers’ story. The humorous descriptions of the zombies are wonderful and introspective. How else would zombies pass the time other than hanging out in an abandoned airport? And what would happen if a single zombie happened upon something that rocked the post zombie apocalyptic boat? Available through Overdrive is my all-time favorite Katie MacAlister book, A Girl’s Guide to Vampires. To me this is canon for paranormal romance fans because love can be a messy business and MacAlister plays up the funny, awkward moments which arise in courtship. This title starts off her Dark Ones series, but each book can be read on its own. Another favorite author is Mercedes Lackey and her book The Fairy Godmother. The character I always found the most interesting in fairy tales is the fairy godmother. Lackey gives you a look into the life of these outliers and how you sometimes have to write your own happily ever after. The Sleeper and the Spindle, Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel is a fairy tale retelling the women save themselves, thank you very much. I may have smiled and had a few chuckles with this one rather than full out belly laughs, but it’s a quick read and well worth it. There are three other titles that did not make me laugh, but are too beautiful not to mention here. In Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian, the search for answers leads two acquaintances to the path of their destiny, which is entwined with Dracula. Jonathan Carrol explores the idea of a guide after death and what might happen if a ghost fell in love with someone still living in A Ghost in Love. This story is more fascinating, inquisitive, and heartfelt than funny. Star-crossed lovers pitted against one another in a magic battle to the death feature in Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus. If you are a movie buff like me, February is probably your favorite time of year for one reason alone: the Academy Awards. Held annually since 1929, the ceremony celebrates the greatest achievements in the art of moviemaking, awarding Oscar statues to filmmakers, actors, and behind-the-scenes technicians such as editors, costume designers, and composers. The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 28, and is guaranteed to bring some snubs and surprises. Whether you are planning a viewing party of your own or are doing something a little more low-key, consider reading The Academy Awards: The Complete Unofficial History by Jim Piazza and Gail Kinn, which features behind-the-scenes info, lists of previous nominees and winners, and, of course, gossip (what kind of Hollywood book would be complete without a little scandal?). If fashion is more your thing, try The Complete Book of Oscar Fashion: Variety’s 75 Years of Glamour on the Red Carpet by Reeve Chace, a pictorial guide featuring the most iconic awards show looks and designers. For a complete list of Oscar nominees, photos, and videos from previous ceremonies, interactive games and apps, and ballots for your viewing party, head over to http://oscar.com. Be sure to stop in at Central Library’s Popular Materials Center from February 1 – 7 and February 21 – March 1 to check out our rotating display of Oscar-winning films. –Kaitlin Conner, Central Library 6 Picks for Best Picture winners –Eleanor Nave, McCollough Branch Library Indiana State Park and Indiana State Museum Passes The Indiana State Park pass will allow entry for one vehicle.
