Activity 3
Food web – simulation activity
Students stand in a circle wearing a card with an image of a plant, animal or ecosystem they then throw a ball of wool to each other to create a food web. As students throw the ball of wool to each other they explain the relationship they share. Holding onto the wool students continue throwing the ball until everyone is holding a strand of wool. What happens if one species becomes extinct or an ecosystem ruined? One student is selected to have a natural disaster and sits down, any students whose strand of wool is pulled when this happens also sits down. This continues until all students are seated. This process represents the flow on effect that change in one part of the ecosystem has on the rest of the ecosystem.

How will we share the things we’ve learnt about the topic?
Present to whole school and classes from neighbouring schools. Invite parents and local council representatives to our workshop.
What will we need for our workshop? (MENTOR?, Props, models, pictures, computers, tables, cleaning products)
Charade cards, ball of wool, food web cards
What similar presentations have we done that may help? (public speaking, drama, talking at assembly)
Inter school conferences and assemblies
What roles do each of us (presenters) have in our presentation? (time keeper, MC, researcher, multimedia manager)
