It provides an integrated environment for developing and testing stored procedures, schemas, SQL scripts, HTML-enabled PL/SQL stored programs, and more — all from an easy-to-use graphical user interface. Powerful options such as debugging, application tuning, and integrated code libraries make rapid, error-free development feasible. This solution suite was conceived, designed, and developed by Oracle experts who have hands-on experience with the challenges faced by Oracle developers. SQL Navigator has set the standard for the complex process of developing, testing, and managing applications that interface with Oracle databases. Minimizing development steps, SQL Navigator’s easy-to-use interface helps Oracle development and administration teams achieve unprecedented productivity gains worldwide. Effortless Data Dictionary Browsing with Complete Database Object Navigation SQL Navigator facilitates easy navigation of database structures by showing database schema objects and their relationships in an intuitive hierarchical interface. For large schemas, users may filter out objects that are not important to the task at hand, making object location easier. In addition, search utilities allow users to find specific database objects or user-specified keywords in source code or stored programs. High Productivity Coding and Editing SQL Navigator’s powerful editing tools, including visual object editors and PL/SQL code editors, eliminate errors and decrease development time. Visual object editors facilitate creating, copying, and setting parameters for database objects. For users who want to view code, SQL Navigator can generate either the DDL of code changes or the complete DDL, enabling whole-object re-creation. SQL Navigator’s code editors allow users to easily create, modify, and execute SQL statements, scripts, and stored programs. SQL scripts can be run or modified with script syntax highlighting, error checking, and support for DBMS_OUTPUT statements. Allowing full control over execution, SQL Navigator’s code editors enable developers to find and fix script errors easily. Ad-hoc database queries may be performed and the results displayed in an output window. They may then be saved and exported in a variety of formats. For building more complex SQL queries, a GUI-based Query Builder automates the process with such capabilities as drag-and-drop table names and column selection. SQL Navigator ™ THE COMPREHENSIVE PL/SQL SERVER-SIDE DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION FOR ORACLE Integrated Version Control Using the Microsoft Source Code Control (SCC) API, SQL Navigator integrates seamlessly with commercial version control systems such as Clear Case, Star Base, Microsoft Source Safe, Merant and others. This enables team-based programming and maintains the integrity of the development process while enhancing development workflow. After registering schema objects with the external version control system, SQL Navigator’s object editors automatically check the objects out. SQL Navigator easily identifies registered version schemas with a “V” icon. Virtually transparent to the user, source code is automatically checked back into the version control system when the user saves and exits the editor. Both scripts and database objects can be registered and protected. SQL Navigator Furthers the Power of Developers PL/SQL Debugger The SQL Navigator Debugger module provides a point-and-click method for eliminating application errors, thus freeing development and testing time for larger programming concerns. From a procedure editing session, developers can code and debug programs and triggers line-by-line, as they execute on the server. The Debugger enables further control over application execution by performing “watches” on any number of variables and displaying their values as they change during execution. It even allows the user to change the values. Normal application execution does not have to change to test other application areas, eliminating the need to write error-trapping logic into code to identify and fix a bug. When developers launch a debugging session, an anonymous block is automatically created and the user is prompted to supply any in or in/out variables. The user has control over the output variables with the option to send it to DBMS_OUTPUT or disregard it. The user also has the option to apply a commit, rollback or neither at the end of the debug session. SQL Navigator provides even more flexibility by allowing users to edit the anonymous block. The Debugger module allows SQL Navigator to open a debug session for database objects that are called from external applications, thereby eliminating the need for an anonymous block. Conditional breakpoints and variable watches round out the Debugger’s capabilities. Oracle Web Development SQL Navigator’s Web Development module provides an integrated development environment with advanced coding, testing, and debugging of PL/SQL programs for the Oracle Web server. It includes a Web server syntax tool, an integrated HTML browser, and context-sensitive help for Web server functions. This allows users to develop PL/SQL code independent of the Web server and view the HTML in an integrated Web browser, thereby eliminating the need to switch from their coding environment to an external browser. SQL Navigator also streamlines the integration of Oracle data with HTML design, enabling developers to quickly generate high-impact, dynamic Web pages. With the web development module, users can convert HTML into Oracle Web cartridge statements with a single click. Developers can easily import HTML into the stored program editor; convert to HTP, add PL/SQL to retrieve data from an Oracle database and save as a stored procedure. Integration with Knowledge Bases SQL Navigator features complete integration with the Knowledge Base for Active PL/SQL Development and the Knowledge Base for Oracle Administration. The knowledge bases are designed to fully anticipate the daily responsibilities of developers. Over 4,500 topics are instantly accessible and include insights, diagrams and examples written by a host of respected industry authors and experts. Using these resources, you can now answer 70-80 percent of your daily Oracle technical questions with just a mouse click. Application Tuning and Expert Advice SQL Navigator’s Xpert Tuning module supplements Oracle tuning skills for developers, stepping up their application tuning capabilities. The Xpert Tuning module makes observations about a selected SQL statement and the underlying database environment, then recommends several options to improve performance. Users can then view the logic behind the advice, implement the recommendation, apply it to the database, and view the results. Xpert Tuning automatically produces all necessary SQL to produce the change. SQL Navigator’s Xpert Tuning module gives developers the expertise necessary for maximizing database performance. To identify bottlenecks in stored procedures and packages, SQL Navigator also features a PL/SQL Profiler (supported for Oracle 8i and higher). The PL/SQL Profiler is tightly integrated with the Xpert Tuning option, so developers can simply click on the tuning button within the PL/SQL Profiler to quickly resolve identified bottlenecks caused by inefficient SQL statements. Integration with SQL Impact™ Quest Software’s SQL Impact™ complements SQL Navigator by providing impact analysis, documentation, and auditing to manage the interdependencies between database objects and application source code. SQL Impact determines precisely which components of an application will be affected by structural changes to the database, drilling down to all lines of affected source code. With SQL Impact, developers can easily execute impact analysis queries against one or more databases to ensure that the changes won’t negatively impact other applications. Comprehensive Development & Deployment Solution SQL Navigator is one element of Quest Software’s complete database development & deployment solution, which enables developers and DBAs to build, develop, test and deploy applications faster.
