JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction of the Vice President of Business Services, the Director, Bookstore is responsible for the overall management and operation of the college bookstore at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campus sites and the specific daily operation of the Bookstore at the Santa Rosa Campus.
SCOPE:
While responsible to the Vice President of Business Service’s office for approval of staffing, the Bookstore is self-supporting and independent of District resources, and maintains its own accounting, business, and internal auditing functions. The Director, Bookstore has overall supervision of the District’s bookstore operations including planning, organizing, coordinating and monitoring sales floor activities; shipping and receiving, textbook and general merchandise purchasing, pricing, merchandising, inventory control and accounting functions; training, supervising and evaluating assigned bookstore staff. The Director,
Bookstore oversees day-to-day retail operation of the Santa Rosa Campus Bookstore, ensuring that all text procedures are adhered to, all non-book purchases are authorized, including properly scheduling staff to meet needs of the store, resolving customer service issues and performing related work as required.
Reviews, evaluates and coordinates new procedures and services to be offered; collaborates with Santa
Rosa Campus management and Vice President, Petaluma Campus regarding changes and improvements to Bookstore policies and procedures, and perform related work as required. (Although this position is based at the Santa Rosa campus, it is not limited strictly to the Santa Rosa Campus and may require time at the Petaluma Campus and/or future satellite locations.)
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature.
1. Plans, organizes and directs the operation of the Bookstore on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses as well as off-campus sites.
2. Supervises the day to day operations of the Bookstore at the Santa Rosa Campus.
3. Maximizes Bookstore growth by developing, monitoring and achieving budget goals through the implementation of cost-savings and revenue generating ideas/programs.
4. Supervises, evaluates and monitors the maintenance of all accounting records, inventory, Bookstore income and Bookstore expenditures.
5. Formulates Bookstore policy and procedures by monitoring and evaluating departmental sales, customer buying trends, and requests from the college community, keeping in mind the Bookstore’s mission to provide necessary and desirable materials for the students who attend SRJC.
6. Monitors, evaluates, and if necessary, institutes changes or adjustments in each sales department including pricing policy.

7. Manages independent computer systems that are not supported by campus personnel such as Text-aid book ordering system, Accounting system, POS inventory sales management system, General
Merchandise ordering system and Financial-Aid accounting system to maintain the Bookstore’s competitiveness, profitability and sustainability.
8. Oversees the design, and maintenance of the Bookstore’s website, and the textbook reserve ordering system, where students will be able to order books online via the Bookstore website or a link from online registration.
9. Directs, supervises and participates in computerized textbook operations including the purchasing of textbooks for the purpose of increasing service and profit.
10. Develops and maintains a used book purchasing and textbook rental program to enhance the learning environment.
11. Provides leadership and supervision and selects, hires, trains, schedules and evaluates all classified employees, STNC employees and student employees.
12. Plans and organizes the surveillance and security of the Bookstore, including the safeguarding of inventory from shrinkage, the prevention of misuse of Bookstore equipment and goods, and the establishment of proper cash-handling procedures to minimize misappropriation.
13. Authorizes the receipt and disbursement of Bookstore funds; oversees the deposit of all monies, and all purchase orders/invoices prior to payment.
14. Monitors and oversees charge accounts established by open purchase orders from schools, and other educational and government entities.
15. Supervises the annual inventory count, and the preparation of year-end financial reports for District
Business Services, and any other relevant state or local agency.
16. Coordinates the Bookstore textbook-cycle; from the solicitation of instructor book-adoptions, to the purchase, sale and the return/buyback of textbooks to ensure student service and cost efficiency.
17. Oversees effective communications within the store, and with the college community at large through outreach with the faculty, students and departmental staff.
18. Monitors and oversees the various scholarship and student assistant programs served by the
Bookstore.
19. Plans and coordinates the advertising, displays, and selling of merchandise in the Bookstore.
20. Authorizes the sale or resale of merchandise to other colleges.
21. Plans, designs and renovates/relocates the Bookstores at Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses as part of any campus facilities plan.
22. Conforms to all State and Federal laws, policies and procedures relevant to the SRJC Bookstore.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed below, or file for equivalency.
Equivalency decisions are made on the basis of a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Education:
Earned Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field, or the equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS – Continued
Experience:
1. Experience managing a large-volume profit center or a bookstore, and experience in textbook and supplies purchasing for a college bookstore, including years of experience in a supervisory capacity;
2. Experience in computerized textbook systems such as: Missouri Textbook System, Nebraska
System, Follett System, etc.;
3. Experience with retail point-of-sale (POS) accounting system.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This classification requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Director, Bookstore reports to the Vice President of Business Services.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Director, Bookstore is responsible for the operation of the College Bookstore(s) and provides direct supervision of management and classified staff, STNC’s, and student employees at all sites.
