From the Director >> Dear Chapter Members, As we begin 2011, we all naturally look back at 2010. For me it has been a year of many changes – some happy, some sad: twin grandbabies, change in pastors, addition of an associate pastor, loss of a very dear friend and choir member, becoming the director of this chapter!…just to name some of the most significant. I know many of you have also experienced many changes in the past year. As we begin a new year, we can reasonably expect more changes for us in our personal and professional life. I remember many years ago a wise homilist said: “Anything that is alive changes.” Speaking of changes, the NPM Detroit website (npmdetroit.org) had a “facelift” recently. We hope you enjoy the new look and find it more helpful for you in your ministry. Check out pictures from past events and information on events that are planned. Hopefully, there is something being offered that is of interest to you. Another nice change is that membership and registration for events can now be done online! One thing that has not changed is your local chapter is here to serve you. If there is something that you think we could offer to help you in your ministry, please let us know. In this new year may you experience God’s abundant blessings as you continue in your ministry to your faith community. God bless! Each Sunday in churches throughout the metropolitan area, we have the selfless and amazing capacity to inspire and lead assemblies of the faithful in liturgical song. Our local NPM Chapter is dedicated to providing opportunities for learning, sharpening our skills, deepening faith, and most important, to get to know one another and support one another in ministry. Please take a look at what we have to offer this coming year and mark your calendars for these events. Invite fellow liturgical ministers, especially the clergy, who might enjoy attending one or more events. The past few years have been a time of transition within our local church…a new archbishop; changing parish pastors; musicians moving into new positions; a struggling economy forcing difficult decisions. Please keep those who minister and work together in our church in your prayers. Let us come together to as disciples to strengthen and grow in the ministry of music and to encourage others as Christ does for us. 3 Event Report St. Cecilia Sing Sunday, November 14, 2010 Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Detroit Choirs from across the archdiocese came together to sing and play their favorite pieces and to join together in hymns and prayer. After the performances, the musicians and audience participated in a memorial for all the deceased pastoral musicians who left us this year. Cantor Workshop Saturday, October 9, 2010 Holy Family Parish, Novi Clinician Melanie Coddington provided cantors with theological as well as practical knowledge of their ministry. The historical meaning and background of the psalm texts were discussed, resources for further study were presented, and expert vocal techniques and warm-ups were taught. NPM Detroit’s newly redesigned website is now up-and-running! We invite you to visit npmdetroit.org to learn more about our chapter and for more information on past and future NPM Detroit events. 4 NPM Detroit Chat and Chew Friday March 4th, 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM Sacred Heart Major Seminary 2701 W Chicago, Detroit, MI 48206 (313) 883-8500 Lee Gwozdz- Singing FUNdamentals for dynamic development of children‟s voices! Lee Gwozdz is known and respected throughout the United States for his work in the area of children’s choirs. He serves as Director of Music for Corpus Christi Cathedral, Corpus Christi, Texas. He is highly sought after as a clinician for children’s voices and conductor of children’s choir festivals. On a lighter note, Lee played for the Texas Rangers Professional Baseball Team, coached by Billy Martin, and the Dallas Black Hawks, his music an inspiration to the team on the road to winning the Adam’s Cup! Lee Gwozdz has put together a video and kit that helps us teach singing to all children. Singing FUNdamentals begins with a vocal checkup to identify and enable every child's voice, then moves to working with all the different types of voices, including the uncertain singer. The vocal pyramid of posture, breath, sound, embouchure, and diction is a major point of interest and discussion. The Toy Box is a treasure trove of toys that really help children develop singing skills and musicality! These products, along with Lee’s other materials will be on display and available for sale (Cash or Check only!) at a 15% discount for chat and chew attendees.
