Maury Kane, retired director of Temple University Duplicating Services, and Ray Chambers, formerly vice president and chief information officer at Juniata College and long-time print manager, received the prestigious awards. The Hall of Fame award recognizes in-plant print managers in higher education who exemplify the highest standards of service to their institutions along with contributions to the ACUP organization and the in-plant community as a whole. Mr. Kane took the reins of Temple University’s offset printing and copy center network in 1987 after nearly 15 years in the commercial printing arena. He modernized the facilities and created a digital print operation consisting of eight copy centers and a central printing operation. Services included copyright clearance and course packet services, retail sales and color copying, as well as an outsourced mailing service. Mr. Kane has been a leader in progressive print management in higher education, He has presented in-plant printing concepts to the University’s management and personnel whenever possible. On behalf of in-plant printing he participated in Canon’s new account representatives’ training at their Long Island Headquarters (2000); presented at the InPlant Digital Road Show at Heidelberg’s Cranberry, New Jersey headquarters, sponsored by the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (2002); University Print Managers Group, UK, PrintIT (2003) and, was part of a three day workshop on In-Plant Printing in Colleges and Universities for the National Association of College Auxiliary Services (2004); and, spoke on a panel at Info Trends Cap Ventures On Demand Show in Philadelphia (2006). He was also a member of Ricoh’s Customer Advisory Panel from 2009 to 2011. Recently, he was a guest speaker at the Network of In-house Printing Professionals Australasia, in Queenstown, New Zealand (2012). Mr. Chambers has over 35 years experience managing award-winning in-plant printing operations, including over 20 years in higher education. He also served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Juniata College, Assistant Vice President for information Technology at the University of Louisville, and is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in higher education administration at Penn State. Chambers is CEO and founder and CEO of Chambers Management Group, a consulting practice focused on helping colleges and universities achieve operational excellence in the operation of non-academic support services. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and has written extensively for a variety of industry publications on topics such as measuring print shop effectiveness, customer satisfaction, improving operational effectiveness, and copier management. Chambers also serves on the New River Valley Planning District Commission. “ACUP leadership is proud to recognize the accomplishments of these two individuals,” says Lisa Hoover, ACUP President and Director of Publications, Print and Mail at Bucknell University. “They represent the values ACUP promotes and serve as examples of excellence in our field. I can’t think of a better way to recognize their contributions than by conferring this award.” ACUP began in 1964 when several Atlantic Coast Colleges and Universities from Maine to Virginia agreed that the formation of an association dedicated to the special circumstances and needs of collegiate printing facility managers would be highly beneficial. It was established to promote communication, training and educational opportunities within the Higher Education in-plant printing and mailing industry. In 2010 it acquired a non-profit organization status to continue to offer members these same benefits.
