HKUSAA Newsletter, 2001 Issue 2 When we first met as the current Ex-Co of HKU Science Alumni Association (HKUSAA), we discussed among ourselves on the major objective of this year and set priorities on the activities to be arranged in the coming year. After discussion, we came to a consensus that we should concentrate in developing fellowship among graduates, undergraduates and faculty staff of the Science Faculty; and to provide guidance and support to science undergraduates. Along this line, a series of activities have been initiated. To provide a causal and regular meeting place for science alumni, we have Happy Hour Gathering on the second Tuesday of every month (from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm) at the Stix Bar of Park Lane Hotel. To maintain ties with our alma mater, the HKUSAA supports most of the activities organized by the DAAO such as the Mentorship Programme. Apart from these on going programs, we have sparked off two events in February - Career Workshop for final year students and Spring Outing at Tai Po Kau Interactive Nature Centre. Career Workshop for Science Undergraduates Science alumni and their mentees The 2001 Career Workshop has three components - career talk, resume workshop and mock interview. The Career Talk was held on Feb 20 and 21. Science Society, with the assistance from the Science Faculty, has done a very professional job in promoting the function to all Science Undergraduates. The HKUSAA was responsible for arranging all speakers and designing contents of the Talk. Selection of employment sectors for the Talk was based on job’s availability and any preference towards Science Graduates. The speakers of the Talk were: Betty Chu (B.Sc, 70) Government sector and EO; Jack Leung (B.Sc. 77)Technical Sales and Marketing leading to General Management; Chan Cho Chek (B.Sc. 74) - Education section; Yu Chan Siu Hing (B.Sc. 73) - Information Technology and Mathew Lai (B.Sc. 86)- Aviation/ Pilot. Mr Mathew Lai and Ms Yu Chan Siu Hing We had a total of 80 participants for the above talks. share We are very glad to have Science Alumni to their success stories with the undergraduates. Mr Jack Leung, Ms Betty Fu and Mr Chan Cho HKUSAA Newsletter, 2001 Issue 2 For the resume workshop, the Science Society had arranged to collect job application letters and resume from participants. We were lucky to have the newly retired Assistant Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Daniel Ho (B.Sc. 71) to advise and coach the undergraduates in fine tuning their application letter and interviewing techniques. Those undergraduates who have handed in their application letters or resumes will be allocated a time slot, if necessary, to meet Mr. Ho for an in person tutorial. A follow-up mock interview will be arranged on Mar 15 where several undergraduates will volunteer for a mock interview. This will help the undergraduates understand what their potential employers would look for in an interview. We hope the undergraduates activities. can benefit from these Wishing them every success in their job-seeking. Spring Outing at Tai Po Kau Interactive Nature Centre The Spring Outing on Feb 18 turned out to be a Organizing Committee of the Spring Outing at their pretrip to the Centre smashing hit among science alumni. One week prior to the day, we had to hold our efforts in calling alumni and friends lest the group would become too large to manage. Even then, a total of 67 alumni and friends showed up which far exceeded our original estimation. The tour started off with a leisure walk at the Interactive Centre. Leaded by an experienced bird watcher who happened to be a HKU science graduate, our group strolled around the Centre for about an hour only to see a handful of birds. Yet, we have learned that “little Egret” is not the youngster of “large Egret” but the two are, in fact, of two different species. We also learned how to identify the humming sound of birds and how to distinguish them from the surrounding background noise. In the afternoon, half of our group went on their adventurous tour to the Natural Reserve nearby. The other half visited the Museum of Ethnology where some 2,000 plus exhibits on authentic tools and utensils collected from different cultures around the world are housed. Those who have attended the handicraft workshops took back home a bamboo coaster and a grass goldfish as souvenir.
