AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS The Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 2006 The Lodge (Hyatt Hotels & Resorts) At McDonalds Office Campus 2805 Jorie Blvd. Oak Brook, IL 60523 630-990-5800 By Steve S. Kang 1 Opening Remarks for An Evening with Friends Time passes on in its linear fashion. It is inherent in nature. And as it has done so, it brings us to mid-summer 2006 and our 8th Annual “Evening with Friends.” Good evening and welcome, dear friends. This evening we gather in honor of The Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund, known as “The Fund”. The Fund was founded eight years ago to honor the memory of Steve Kang. Our vision is to build the Fund for talented young people in need of financial assistance, so that they may pursue their passions in the arts and sciences. Starting with the initial seed money of $11,000 eight years ago, the Fund has grown to $ 200,000 in year 2006. Your generous support and enthusiastic participation has enabled us to grant $30,000 in scholarships for each of the past 5 years. This is a significant growth from $11,000 for the first year. The Fund and its purpose continue to become more widely acknowledged through time. We receive an increasing number of applications every year from young individuals who seek to learn and fulfill their academic potential. Since its beginning, the Fund has had opportunity to help these students fulfill their individual dreams with your assistance. We all will ultimately benefit from their efforts and ours as we experience the arts and progress in our society. The Fund has received generous support from many benefactors, and it has achieved a great sense of pride. A deep, individual tragedy has inspired a meaningful, lasting memorial. It has become a proud public entity that has contributed towards the future by encouraging and developing young talent in our community. This achievement has also demonstrated a deeper commitment with the recent establishment of our Advisory Board. Some of you may consider contributing to the Fund by serving with others on our Board. There is a Chinese proverb “If your vision is for a year, plant wheat. If your vision is for a decade, plant trees. If your vision is for a lifetime, plant people.” We are here, this beautiful evening, to celebrate the everlasting spirit of a young artist, Steve S. Kang, and embrace our vision of The Fund for talented young people to pursue their passion in the arts and sciences. Please enjoy this evening as a moment of joy, hope, love, and a commitment in unity. It is but a small gesture of appreciation for your many ongoing contributions. The Fund respects your generosity, your support, and your presence here this evening. A warm “Thank You” to each one of you on the Fund’s behalf. From our Hearts to Yours, Isaac Suh, on behalf of the Steve S. I would like to express my deep appreciation to the Kang family for turning their personal pain into something that we as a community can support and nurture. In our community, there are many young minds with so much potential to become great scientists, artists and leaders of other fields. Because of these talented young individuals, we can hope for a brighter future for all us. Then, it is our obligation as a community to come together and pool our resources to cultivate an environment where these students can thrive. I believe that Steve S. Kang Scholarship Foundation has been filling this role, and the efforts so far have significantly contributed also to the progress of the Korean-American community. I would like to commend the awardees of scholarship for their hard work and ask them to persevere in their academics to become important members of the society and future leaders of the Korean American community. My sincere thanks go to Dr. Soosang Kang who has nurtured the foundation over the years so that more and more students of KoreanAmerican community can benefit from it. I also would like to thank the friends and supporters of Steve S. Kang Scholarship Foundation. With your continued dedication and commitment, I firmly believe Steve S. Kang Young Artists & Scholars Fund that has supported my studies for the past two years. My family moved to the U.S. 6 years ago. My father works at my uncle’s cleaners and my mother, who obtained her U.S. nursing license recently, has been working as a certified nursing assistant. For the past three years, I have been attending Northwestern University in Evanston studying physics and mathematics. Despite the steep increase in tuition each year, I have been able to focus on my studies without having to worry about piling debt, thanks to the support I received from The Fund. My academic goal is to become a physics researcher. During my sophomore and junior years, I worked with professor Ketterson at Northwestern University studying and testing novel ways of doing optical microscopy. This summer, I received a grant from the National Science Foundation to work with professor Cluzel at The University of Chicago, studying genetic activities in bacteria using various quantitative techniques commonly used in physics . This fall, I am applying to graduate programs in physics across the nation, and I am able to look forward to my graduate studies without financial burden left over from undergraduate studies. This scholarship truly made a positive impact on my educational experience, and I sincerely thank you for your generous support. Thank you. Sung Won Ahn I am greatly honored to be a Steven Kang scholarship recipient of this year. Words cannot sufficiently express what this scholarship means to me. This scholarship fund will allow me to reach goals that would not be attainable without it. For one thing, this scholarship fund has provided me with the financial resources necessary to study in greater depth mathematics and actuarial science at Drake University. Not only am I doing academic study, but I am also currently conducting research regarding graph theory in cooperation with three of my classmates. Our project is to calculate the least number of connections and vertices that are needed for a certain population that is given. Completing this project will help to increase wireless network speed by removing duplicated wireless cables. 7 This scholarship fund has taught me to value all the people around me who put in a lot of effort to help me achieve my future dreams and goals. I will put the fund to good use. It is my wish to use my research and projects that have been made possible by this scholarship for the public good. Once again, I truly appreciate all of your support. Thank you very much. Young A Jo “What This Scholarship Means to Me…” When I was asked me to speak, I felt very honored and grateful. This evening, I would like to share how the scholarship has influenced me personally. To me, this scholarship has meant more than just a financial help. The scholarship to me is a people’s belief in me and my obligation to pay back to our community. It is quite interesting how much I have changed throughout the college years. I first received the scholarship freshmen year of college. At the moment our family was going through a major financial hardship. The news of scholarship came as a sweet rain after a long drought. For me it seemed like there were people out there in the world who cared about our struggles (especially my mom’s) and who believed in me. It made me care about the community that I was living in and made me eternally obliged to pay back to that community that has helped me believe in myself. I don’t think it is possible for me to express how much the scholarship has meant to me through mere words. However, in a best way I can, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the scholarship donors for their generosity and making us believe in ourselves. ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS DR. HYUNG WON CHO DR. Dr. Kim will be speaking to us “The United States and Two Koreas” "Korea has had five thousand years of long history maintaining one nationality and one country despite the foreign invasions and occupation. However, Korea was divided into two countries at the end of the World War II along the 38th parallel line. North Korea was occupied then the Soviet Union and South Korea was by the United States. There were three divided nations at the end of the W. W. II such as Germany into East and West, Vietnam into North and South and Korean into North and South. However, Germany and Vietnam have achieved their reunification in the aftermath of the Cold War. Korea is still divided into two halves and still struggling for reunification. What was the role of the United States in dividing Korea and how did the United States got involved in the Korean War and sustained its role in helping South Koreans to develop its economy to the modern industrial nation? What ought to be the role of the United States in reunifying the two Koreas? “ LISA PARK: VIOLINIST Violinist Lisa Park made her solo debut with the New England String Ensemble (NESE) under Susan Davenny Wyner in 2000 and has since been an active solo, chamber, and orchestral musician. KANG YOUNG ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS FUND (THE FUND) 16 Forest Gate Circle, Oak Brook, Illinois 60523 Tel : 630-572-9202, Fax : 630-572-9765 E-mail: sskangfund@comcast.net Website: sskangfund.org BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund is about community and dreams: specifically about working together as a community to help young people follow their dreams. Eight years ago, Steve Kang was killed in a tragic auto accident at age 28. A community of people came together at that time in an outpouring of support and generosity to establish the Fund. Many of the older members of the community, like Steve’s father, remember the hardships they faced as penniless students, striving to make and build a better life for themselves and their families far from home. Their tenacity and dedication led to a level of success that enables them to share with others: those who are just getting started in their chosen career paths and are struggling to establish themselves as leaders in their fields. The younger members of the community, working to gain a foothold in the world, remember that it was not so long ago that they were pulling together numbers from summer jobs, student loans, scholarships, hoping they would have enough to cover the ever-increasing costs of education. They give what they can in empathy and to pass on what may have been given to them. It is these members of the community that have, through the Fund, enabled so many young people to continue on their paths. Over the past seven years, the Fund has distributed scholarships totaling $179,000 to 54 students. Starting with $11,000 for the first year, the Fund is granting $30,000 annually for the past five years. Several students have received scholarships during more than one school year. We consider this an outstanding achievement for a community-funded organization. We are proud of all the talented students the Fund has helped over the years. More than one student has told us that they would not have been able to complete projects or graduate without the Fund’s financial support. Recipients have used their scholarships to pay tuition, buy books and music, fund films, and replenish art supplies and travel to concerts and competitions. It is the support of this community, both financial and emotional support that enables these students to become leaders in music, film and various professions. Your continued support allows aspiring artists and scholars to achieve our collective dream of a world filled with our children fulfilling their dreams. 19
