Mission
N
otre Dame High School, a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy seeks to prepare students for college by
providing a challenging academic environment that stimulates students intellectually, physically and
spiritually, in a community that respects a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, thus inspiring
life-long learners, critical thinkers, and compassionate, responsible citizens of the world.
Vision
S
ponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Notre Dame High School will thrive as a faith-based regional college
preparatory school by providing a comprehensive and challenging educational experience based on
best practices that develop the whole person. Notre Dame High School will prepare students to actualize
their potential and become morally, socially and globally responsible adults in a safe, inclusive, and diverse
setting where individuals show compassion and respect for others. Notre Dame High School will enjoy
the support of all of its various stake holders, including alumni, parents, students, faculty, administration,

environment that enriches students – mind and heart, body and soul. Our dedicated faculty and staff
guide our students’ development in accordance with the Core Values of a Sisters of Mercy education:

Notre Dame High School Annual Report 2013-2014
A Message from the President
F
or more than half a century, Notre Dame High
School has made a difference- for students, for
parents, for families and for the community.
In preparing young men and women to continue
their education and become strong, value-centered,
contributing citizens, the school has made the
dreams of our Mercy Foundress, Catherine McAuley,
come alive.
In March of 2014, Notre Dame entered the public
phase of the Legacy of Caring Campaign with the
announcement of a special 2 million dollar gift
from Richard (’58) and Carol Crossed. The school
embarked on this campaign to address the following
school needs: greater financial security through the
establishment of an endowment, higher levels of
academic excellence and a safe environment- both
inside and outside the school. With the Crossed’s
leadership, along with that of many others, our
campus has been transformed and the school has
moved closer to our goal of 5 million dollars. If
you visit our school, you will see expanded and refinished tennis courts, a renovated Brewer Memorial
Stadium with a turf field, an all-weather track, new
bleachers and press box and a new concession stand,
as well as an auditorium with a new rigging and
lighting system. All of these improvements have
enhanced our campus and made it safer for our
students, faculty, families and visitors.
We continue to seek gifts to fund the other projects
associated with our campaign: a new boiler
and heating components, technology upgrades,
scholarship funding and teacher professional
development to assist with instructional strategies.
All of these items will sustain us as we move into
Richard Crossed’58 with his daughter Jessica Shanahan, Sister
Nancy Kelly, Principal, and Sister Mary Walter Hickey, President.
the future. All gifts, no matter the size, provide the
unique opportunity for our supporters to impact
the legacy of Notre Dame High School. The Legacy
of Caring Capital Campaign will further bolster
our school for future success and is sure to have a
profound impact on countless students and their
families.
We are excited and hopeful about our future as we
continue the well-established tradition of excellence.
The successes of our school and our students are the
direct result of the monumental efforts of those who
have gone before us. A gift to Notre Dame is a gift to
many. This campaign provides a unique opportunity
for the generosity of our supporters to impact the
legacy of Notre Dame.
We are pleased to publish the following list of the
donors who have generously contributed to this
campaign and ask others to consider joining them to
help the school reach, or even exceed, our goal of 5
million dollars.
Sincerely,
Sister Mary Walter Hickey, RSM

Thank You Corning Incorporated and Corning
Enterprises
D
uring the 2013-2014 school year, Corning Incorporated continued its
scholarship support with a gift of $100,000 to be used for financial
assistance for families in need. The intent of this funding is to increase
enrollment of new students as well as to assist families whose financial
situation had worsened and who were thinking of withdrawing their child
from Notre Dame.
Corning Incorporated believes that Notre Dame High School provides an
important educational alternative for the community. The economic times
have created challenges for many families and Corning wishes to make sure
our school remains strong and viable.
The school also appreciates the funding for Math, Science and Technology
from Corning Enterprises. The Science Department received funding for
materials to be used in their classes and funds to our Math instructional
support teacher who has been working to continue to upgrade and improve
our math program by working with teachers to strengthen their math
instructional skills. All this funding amounted to over $175,000.
The school is especially grateful for the generous support from Corning.

Notre Dame High School Annual Report 2013-2014
A Message from the Board of Trustees
W
hen the Rochester Sisters of Mercy
assumed responsibility for the operation
of Notre Dame High School in 1955, they
depended on the generosity of the Elmira community
to sustain their efforts in the vital and important
ministry of education. The Spirit of the Sisters of
Mercy and the charism of Catherine McAuley remains
a vital part of Notre Dame and the school continues
to depend on the generosity of others to sustain its
commitment to the Christian education of young
men and women.
We are most appreciative to all of you for your gifts
to the Annual Fund. These much needed donations
support operations, provide income for faculty
salaries and financial assistance for our students
as well as funds to pay the electric and gas. Your
financial support enables the school to achieve high
academic standards and strong spiritual beliefs to
which it is committed. Thank you so very much.
For more than 58 years, our friends and benefactors
have been the visible presence of the tender mercy
of God. We pray that the vision of Catherine McAuley
will direct our efforts in the future and that God will
continue to bless our ministry.

Giving Opportunities
I
n the life of schools, Notre Dame is still young,
but it is important for the school to plan for its
longevity. One of the best ways to for you to help
us ensure Notre Dame’s longevity and map its future
is through Planned Giving.
A planned gift is any major gift made in lifetime or
at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or
estate plan. Planned giving often allows individuals
to make larger gifts than they could make from their
annual income. By making a planned gift to Notre
Dame High School you can make a difference.
Types of Planned Giving Include:
Gifts by Will
Through various types of bequests to Notre Dame
High School, you may secure a charitable estatetax deduction for the value of the gift. Best of all,
you will know that your generosity will support
the mission of the school for years to come.
Gifts That Pay You Income
Do you want to support Notre Dame High School,
but worry about having enough income for
yourself and your loved ones? Life-income gifts,
such as gift annuities, charitable annuities and
charitable remainder trusts, can provide donors
with an income stream, significant tax savings,
and the satisfaction of supplying the school with
vital, long-term resources.
Gifts That Protect Your Assets
A Charitable Lead Trust may appeal to you if you
wish to make a gift to Notre Dame High School,
but want to retain the property in your family.
Payments can be made to the school for a number
of years (until the end of your or another’s life)
and then the principal is distributed to your heirs.
Gifts From Retirement Plans
You may consider using retirement-plan benefits
to make a significant gift that will support Notre
Dame High School. The cost of your gift to your
estate and heirs is often relatively small because
of the estate and income–tax treatment of
retirement-plan benefits.
Gifts of Life Insurance
You may consider naming Notre Dame High
School as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a
life insurance policy.
Gifts by Estate Note
An estate note is an irrevocable pledge or debt against the donor’s estate.
20
Donor-Advised Funds
Many donors find a donor-advised fund to be an
economically attractive alternative to a private
foundation and a superior opportunity for their
involvement in a long-term charitable giving plan.
Making Gifts by Will
Types of Bequests
Specific Bequests are used to make a gift of a
specific dollar amount, a specific percentage of
assets, or specific assets.
Residuary Bequests are used to give all or a
portion of the rest, residue, and remainder of your
estate after payment of expense and any specific
amounts designated to other beneficiaries.
Designating the Purpose of a Bequest
Unrestricted Bequests: The most useful type of
bequest is unrestricted, allowing the funds to be
allocated by Notre Dame High School wherever
the need is the greatest.
Restricted Bequests: You may designate that a
bequest support a special purpose that reflects
your personal or interest (e.g. scholarships). If you
wish to designate a specific purpose, we would be
pleased to provide appropriate language for you to
share with your attorney. Alternatively, you may
specify the purpose of your bequest in a separate
letter of designation to remain on file with the
school.
For Further Assistance:
We are here to help you accomplish your
charitable, financial, and estate planning
objectives. Please feel free to contact the Notre
Dame High School Advancement Office for further
information.

Caring Spirit Flows from Tragedy at ND
A
nne Crispino, a
long-time English
teacher here at
ND was looking forward
to a great weekend when
she left school on June
6, 2014. The pages for
those days in the calendar
on her desk expressed her
excitement as she had
On the day after the accident, both Sister Nancy and
Sister Walter called the staff together before school
for prayer and planned how they were going to help
students work through the tragedy.
“We are all a mess,” Sister Nancy said. “You always
pray that students will be safe when they go to the
prom, field trips and other activities, but you never
expect that something will happen to one of your
staff.”
written, “Bike! Bike! Bike!”
“She really loved riding the motorcycle”, said
Principal, Sister Nancy Kelly.
Following the meeting, students and staff were called
to an assembly and Sister Walter led a prayer service.
“It was such a blow to all of us and she told everyone
that we all have to take care of each other this week.”
On Sunday, June 8, just after noon, Anne was
enjoying a ride on the back of their motorcycle
driven by her husband, Myron, on State Route 21 in
the Town of Fremont, NY when they suddenly struck
a guardrail. They were both thrown from the bike
and killed. Their deaths stunned the Notre Dame
community.
Sister Nancy said she looked sadly and, yet,
inspiringly into Mrs. Crispino’s two English
classrooms as substitute teachers worked with Mrs.
Crispino’s lesson plan to help students prepare for
final exams the next week.
Sister Mary Walter Hickey, President had known
Anne since she hired her in 1977 shortly after Anne
and Myron were married. She knew her as a teacher,
friend and a young mother who sent both of the
couple’s children, Matthew’01 and Nicholas’07 to
Notre Dame.
“She was a good person and a hard worker who loved
life and was very generous. She would never turn yo
down when you asked her to do something,” she said.
Students wrote messages about Mrs. Crispino on a
12” X 4” white paper spread over a bulletin board.
Most wrote about how kind she was and how they
would miss her.
Mrs. Crispino was remembered at graduation on June
13th with the student council and English awards
being renamed for her. The school purchased a black
granite bench in her and Myron’s memory in the Joel
Stephens Memorial Park.
“She is one we won’t forget,” Sister Walter said.
Sister Nancy was hired with Anne and recalls a
person who liked to have fun and tell it like it was.
“Anne was always so kind and you knew where you
stood with her. She could find humor even on bad
days,” said Nancy, who recalled that Anne was known
for wearing “crazy” socks.
In Loving Memory of Anne & Myron Crispino
